First Images and Synopsis for PIRANHA 3DD

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: November 2nd, 2011 at 3:53 pm

The sequel to Alexandre Aja’s remake of Piranha 3D, aptly titled Piranha 3DD, is on its way, and we’ve got the first batch of images from the follow-up. In the sequel, the toothy amphibians head to a water park to wreak havoc. Judging from the teaser trailer, an adequate amount of carnage/nudity will ensue, and when you’re going to see a movie called Piranha 3DD, that’s really all you can ask for. Along with the first images, we’ve also got a full synopsis for the film. The images unveil David Hasselhoff in what looks to be full Baywatch gear, Gary Busey doing his thing, and a piranha feasting on some young woman’s jugular. Ah, water parks. Hit the jump for the images and synopsis.  And here’s the trailer if you missed it.

Teaser Trailer for PIRANHA 3DD

I haven’t gotten around to seeing Alexandre Aja’s remake of Piranha 3D, but I heard good things all around regarding its creative kills, delightful stupidity, and all-around exploitative nature.  It’s a movie that knows what it wants to be an pulls it off.  That general consensus combined with a solid box office performance has led to the sequel Piranha 3DD.  The new film has the carnivorous fishies headed to a water park, which aren’t really sanitary places to begin with.  Dimension Films premiered the first trailer last night at the SpikeTV Scream Awards and it looks like they’ve definitely got the “DD” part down.  Also, Ving Rhames’s character apparently shops at the same prosthetics store as Cherry Darling.  I have no complaints about gun-legs.

Hit the jump to check out the teaser trailer.  The fish food cast also includes Danielle Panabaker, Matt Bush, Chris Zylka, Meagan Tandy, Katrina Bowden, David Hasselhoff, Christopher Lloyd, Paul Scheer, and Gary Busey.  Piranha 3DD opens next year.

EFish Entertainment has contracted Val Kilmer, Ving Rhames, Luke Goss, and Rebecca Da Costa to star in the independent thriller Seven Below.  Speaking as a sucker for any movie that bends time and space, the logline provided by Variety sounds pretty cool:

“Story centers on a group of strangers brought together when a terrible storm leaves them stranded in a house in the woods where a terrible event transpired exactly 100 years prior. The group seems trapped in a ghostly time warp, and history is repeating itself.”

Kevin Carraway will direct from a script he co-wrote with Lawrence Smith; Warren Ostergard, Brianna, Lee Johnson, and Eric Mark Fisher (“EFish” himself) are producing.  Production was initially scheduled earlier this year in New Mexico before a change in the state tax credits lured EFish to Cincinnati.  The new start date is next month.

First Trailer for MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – GHOST PROTOCOL – Updated With New Images

Paramount has released the first trailer for Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, the fourth entry in the spy franchise. The trailer is pretty much everything you want out of a Mission: Impossible movie, and it looks like it could be the best yet. The action looks great without being cheesy or showy, and the cast assembled here is top-notch. Plus, freaking Brad Bird (Ratatouille) is making his live-action directorial debut.

Tom Cruise, Simon Pegg, and Ving Rhames reprise their series roles, joined by Jeremy Renner, Josh Holloway, Anil Kapoor, Léa Seydoux, and Vladimir Mashkov. Mission: Impossible III director J.J. Abrams is on board as producer.  Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol opens on December 16.  Watch the trailer after the jump.

[Update: We've updated the article with some official images from the film as well]

PIRANHA 3DD Stunt Casting Continues as David Hasselhoff Joins the Cast

Piranha 3DD clearly has no desire to be considered a real movie and if attempting to top their previously-announced stunt casting of Gary Busey by hiring David Hasselhoff.  Unfortunately, nothing beats Busey.  The new film takes place at a water park so perhaps Hasselhoff will be playing a lifeguard.  You know, because he was a lifeguard on Baywatch.  So clever, Piranha 3DD.

The film also stars Ving Rhames, Christopher Lloyd, Paul Scheer, Katrina Bowden, Danielle Panabaker, Matt Bush, Chris Zylka, and David Koechner.  Piranha 3DD opens in 3D on November 23rd.

Casting Call: Lloyd, Rhames, and Scheer Return for PIRANHA 3DD; Michael Kelly Joins CHRONICLE

We have some quick casting stories for you this afternoon.  First up, The Weinstein Company has sent out a press release announcing that Christopher Lloyd, Ving Rhames, and Paul Scheer will return for Piranha 3DD. Their characters survived the first film, and like all good horror flick survivors, I’m sure they’ll offer some kind of cursory explanation of what’s happening, that explanation will be ignored until it’s too late, and then at least two out of the three survivors will be destroyed.  My money is on Rhames making it out alive.  The trio joins previously announced cast members Katrina Bowden, Gary Busey, Danielle Panabaker, David Koechner, Matt Bush, and Chris Zylka.  Piranha 3DD opens in 3D on November 23rd.

In other casting news, Variety reports that Michael Kelly (The Adjustment Bureau) has joined Dane DeHaan Michael B. Jordan, Alex Russell, and Ashley Hinshaw in Chronicle.  Kelly will play the father of one of three teenagers who get superpowers when they come into contact with a mysterious substance.  Josh Trank will make his feature directing debut from a script by Max Landis.  Chronicle is set for release on February 3, 2012.

Ving Rhames to Lead David Gordon Green’s Comedy Central Pilot BLACK JACK

We recently learned that Pineapple Express and Your Highness director David Gordon Green would write and direct a new pilot called Black Jack for Comedy Central. At the time, the official order for the pilot was contingent on who would be cast in the lead role, but now Deadline reports Ving Rhames has taken the part and that clause has been lifted. The new comedy series will follow Rhames as the title character who after 20 years as the most kick-ass special ops agent the US government has had on its payroll, finally goes too far and is de-commissioned, forcing him to live his life like the rest of us. This isn’t the first time Rhames has led a television series after his turn as Kojak in the series remake back in 2005. Personally, I like him as a character actor, but in Green’s hand, this new series could turn out to be just fine.

THE TOURNAMENT Blu-ray Review

by Ben Begley    Posted: January 1st, 2011 at 6:59 am

the-tournament-slice

The Tournament comes out of the gates guns blazing/blood splattering and for 90 minutes keeps that momentum going.  It is one of those rare straight-to-DVD action films that avoids looking super low budget and lame, features a cast of pretty well-known actors and a contains a heaping helping of blood, bullets, as well as some awesome stunts.  But is there some higher meaning to the film or any redeeming qualities outside of mindless violence?

Find out in my Blu-ray review, after the jump.

First Look at Simon Pegg in MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – GHOST PROTOCOL

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: December 13th, 2010 at 10:18 pm

While you’re gonna have to wait until March to see the sure-to-be fantastic Simon Pegg/Nick Frost starrer Paul, we’ve got some pictures of Pegg, Tom Cruise, and Paula Patton on the set of the next Mission: Impossible film to tide you over. Directed by the superb Brad Bird (The Incredibles, The Iron Giant, Ratatoullie), Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol is the fourth entry in the popular franchise that’s been spearheaded by Cruise since the first film back in 1996. Bird has assembled a highly impressive cast that includes Cruise, Pegg, Patton, Jeremy Renner, Ving Rhames, Josh Holloway (Lost), Anil Kapoor (Slumdog Millionaire), Léa Seydoux (Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood), and Vladimir Mashkov (The Thief). If that wasn’t enough, Michael Giacchino is also doing the score.

We previously brought you some pictures of Holloway on set, as well as Cruise doing some insane stunt work off the side of one of the tallest buildings in the world. While these pictures lack death-defying stunts, they include Simon Pegg, who is just about as awesome as they come. Needless to say, if I had you at “Simon Pegg” (which, let’s face it, I probably did), hit the jump to check out the pictures:

Last year, we brought you loads of coverage from AFM (American Film Market).  AFM is where buyers and sellers do business to bring you the films you might be seeing in the near future.  They use artwork and synopses which are used for promotional purposes but which we use to bring you news on these films.  With this year’s AFM gearing up, we have artwork and synopsis on four upcoming movies: On the Inside starring Nick Stahl and Olivia Wilde; The Witches of Oz (which is actually a mini-series) starring Christopher Lloyd, Sean Astin, Billy Boyd, and Lance Henriksen; The Eagle Path written, produced, directed by, and starring Jean-Claude Van Damme; and Bridge to Nowhere starring Ving Rhames, Danny Masterson, and Bijou Phillipps, and directed by Blair Underwood.

Hit the jump for artwork and synopses for these films plus a trailer for Bridge to Nowhere.  Look for a lot more AFM coverage soon.

Josh Holloway On the Set of MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 4

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub    Posted: October 14th, 2010 at 11:21 am

The first images of Josh Holloway on the set of director Brad Bird’s Mission Impossible IV have hit the net.  While I would love to point out the cool costume he’s wearing, or talk about him running down a street with an awesome gun, the first images feature Holloway standing around on set.  However, with this being the first thing Holloway has worked on since Lost wrapped, I figured they were worth checking out.

While many have soured on Tom Cruise, I’m really looking forward to MI4.  It’s because of one person: Brad Bird. As the director of The Iron Giant, The Incredibles, and Ratatouille, Bird is nothing short of a genius.  I’m extremely excited to see his first live action project.  Also, he’s assembled an all star cast featuring Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg, Anil Kapoor, Halloway, Ving Rhames, Lea Seydoux and Vladimir Mashkov.  He also landed Michael Giacchino to do the score.  So, yeah, I’m excited for this one.  Hit the jump for the images:

Liotta most recently costarred in Charlie St. Cloud.  Rhames is reprising his role as Luther Stickell in the fourth Mission: Impossible movie, which shoots at the end of the year.  Slater recently shot the crime thriller Guns, Girls, & Gambling with Gary Oldman and Dane Cook.  Shooting on The River Sorrow begins next week in Washington.

OPERATION: ENDGAME Blu-Ray Review

by Ethan Anderton    Posted: August 31st, 2010 at 10:36 am

When a film has an eclectic cast including the talents of Rob Corddry, Zach Galifianakis, Maggie Q, Jeffrey Tambor, Ving Rhames, Emilie de Ravin, Adam Scott, Odette Yustman, Ellen Barkin, Brandon T. Jackson and Joe Anderson you’re either in for something fantastic or a complete disaster. Though the fact that this title went straight-to-DVD is somewhat of an indicator, there’s certainly a battle to be fought in deciding whether action and comedy come together to form an entertaining flick. So how does this story of two feuding teams of government assassins fare? Find out after the jump.

Ving Rhames’ Future Oscar Acceptance Speech for PIRANHA 3D

It looks like Piranha 3D‘s fake Oscar campaign has worked.  Ving Rhames has won/will win the Acadamy Award for Best Actor in 2011 for his work in Alexandre Aja’s 3D horror-fest.  While this Funny or Die video exists in a wonderful alternate universe, I would like to imagine the day when Ving Rhames will give what looks to be one of the all-time great award acceptance speeches.  And no, I don’t know why he’s holding a tux throughout the speech.

Hit the jump to check out the video.  Piranha 3D is now in theaters.

Ving Rhames to Return for MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE IV

Ving Rhames said on Lopez Tonight last night that he will be returning to play Luther Stickell in Mission: Impossible IV.  I imagine it took this long for the news to get online because no one watches Lopez Tonight.  We previously reported that Simon Pegg is in talks to return as Benji Dunn and yesterday we reported that Tom Cruise has taken an up-front pay-cut for the film.

Directed by Brad Bird (The Incredibles) and produced by J.J. Abrams, Mission: Impossible is slated to hit theaters on December 16, 2011.
