In Rob Reiner’s new comedy-drama, The Magic of Belle Isle, Morgan Freeman plays Monte Wildhorn, a famous Western novelist in the third act of his life whose glory days are now behind him. For Monte, long confined to a wheelchair and recently widowed, nothing is left except long bleak days and battling alcoholism as he housesits a lakeside cabin in Belle Isle for the summer. Everything changes when he meets his next door neighbors, Mrs. O’Neil (Virginia Madsen) and her three daughters. For more on the film, here's the trailer.

At the film’s press day, we sat down with Freeman and Madsen to talk about bringing The Magic of Belle Isle to the screen. Freeman told us what it was like to play a romantic lead, how he drew upon his real life experiences to portray a wheelchair-bound character, why stories about storytelling are important because imagination is an essential ingredient in life, and how he deals with celebrity. Madsen revealed how she bonded with the young actresses who played her daughters, her thoughts on Sideways being turned into a play, and what it was like dancing with Freeman. Freeman also discussed his charitable work and his upcoming role in The Dark Knight Rises.

Question: What were the scenes that were fun to play in this movie?

Morgan Freeman: Every single one.

Virginia Madsen: Every single one. All of it.

Freeman: Except maybe a few with the dog. Sometimes the dog was ...

The first trailer and poster for Rob Reiner’s drama The Magic of Belle Isle have gone online. The film stars Morgan Freeman as a famous Western novelist whose struggle with alcoholism has sapped his passion for writing. He takes a lakeside cabin for the summer in Belle Isle, where he befriends a single mom and her daughters who (naturally) help him to feel inspiration once again. Though this is the same director as A Few Good Men and Stand By Me, Reiner’s recent output has leaned heavily toward Hallmark fare with pics like The Bucket List and Flipped, and The Magic of Belle Isle is no exception. That said, I can say without hesitation that my mom will absolutely want to see this.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer. The film also stars Madeline Carroll, Fred Willard, Kenan Thompson, and Kevin Pollak. The Magic of Belle Isle will be available on iTunes on June 1st and opens in theaters on July 6th.

Click over to Apple to watch in HD.

Here’s the synopsis:
Reuniting with his director from the hit film, The Bucket List, Morgan Freeman plays Monte Wildhorn, a famous Western novelist whose struggle with alcoholism has sapped his passion for writing. He takes a lakeside cabin for the summer in picturesque Belle Isle, and befriends the family next door--an attractive single mom (Virginia Madsen) and her young daughters--who help him find inspiration again.

The 2012 Sundance Film Festival just ended and the Berlin Film Festival is about to get underway, so don’t expect the acquisition stories to slow down. As such, we’ve got two fresh acquisitions to share with you today. First up, IFC Films has picked up the Sundance documentary Room 237. The film examines the numerous theories surrounding the “real meaning” of Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining. The doc was a big hit at the fest (you can read Matt’s review here), but many questioned the logistics of releasing it theatrically due to the fact that it’s comprised of footage from The Shining, which could possibly lead to legal entanglements. IFC's acquisition is great news and I’m glad to see that us common folk will get a chance to check out the flick sometime soon.

Deadline reports that the film may screen in the New Directors/New Film series in New York, and it’s a likely bet for the Cannes Film Festival. IFC plans on releasing the pic domestically later this year through a day-and-date theatrical and VOD release. If you haven’t surmised from our previous acquisition stories, VOD is all the rage at the moment and is a likely staple in the future of film distribution. Hit the jump for acquisition news concerning Rob Reiner’s The Magic of Belle Isle.

Additionally, Magnolia Pictures announced today that they will handle US distribution of director Rob Reiner’s (The Bucket List) drama The Magic of Belle Isle. The film stars Morgan Freeman as a famous Western novelist ...

From the outset, Catherine Hardwicke’s Red Riding Hood sounds kind of… great? Seriously. Her best film is easily Thirteen, which dealt with young girls coming to understand their sexuality (and power therein), and Hardwicke brought the right temperament to the first Twilight film – she got the sexuality right and winked at the audience about the material’s inherent silliness. For Red Riding Hood, she has a great cast (Amanda Seyfried, Gary Oldman, Virginia Madsen, Lukas Haas, Julie Christie), the idea of the wolf as sexual predator, and the same sort of romantic triangle. If the film had done anything right, it might have – if nothing else – achieved cult status. Too bad the film is garbage in any cut. Our review of the Blu-ray of Red Riding Hood (which offers an Alternate cut of the movie) follows after the jump.

A medieval village is being hunted by a werewolf, and has been for decades. The town has dealt with it by offering sacrifices, which has kept the wolf at bay. Valarie (Seyfried) is of marrying age, and has two suitors: Peter (Shiloh Fernandez) and Henry (Max Irons). She’s in love with one but promised to the other. Her sister also loves one of these boys, but is the first human murdered by the Wolf in ages. Such leads to the arrival of Solomon (Gary Oldman), the great Werewolf hunter.

Faster than you can say The Crucible, Seyfried becomes Scarlet lettered for being able to speak to the Wolf. She has a ...

Oscar-nominee Virginia Madsen (Sideways) and SNL's Kenan Thompson are in the midst of negotiations to join director Rob Reiner's (When Harry Met Sally) drama Summer at Dog Dave's. Already starring Morgan Freeman, the film tells the story of a disabled author (Freeman) whose love of the sauce is reducing his creative output. According to Variety, Madsen would make a turn as Freeman's new neighbor, a single-mother of three who befriends the author and inspires him to, well you can probably guess the outcome (hint: he starts writing again). As for Thompson, the report claims he is in talks to take on the role of Freeman's "helpful nephew." Apparently not helpful enough to help him overcome alcoholism, but helpful nonetheless. Production on Summer at Dog Dave's is set to begin in New York this July with the film aiming for a 2012 release.

There's a strangeness that creeps along the edges of Catherine Hardwicke's Red Riding Hood. It's a PG-13 teen soap opera that wants to sneak in some surprisingly R-rated content like cannibalism and torturing the mentally handicapped. But what's surprising and creative in the film is always smothered beneath convention, simplistic design, and insulting themes. There are directors who could blend a classic fairy tale with a teen drama and a modern attitude, but Hardwicke is not one those directors. Red Riding Hood feels unbalanced and its stranger elements never feel organically blended into the larger narrative. The result is an off-putting affair that owes more to Twilight than it does to the Brothers Grimm.

Red Riding Hood is set in a quaint village that has a bit of a wolf problem, but ritual animal sacrifices at the full moon have kept the beast at bay for the past two decades. Against this back drop we meet the young and beautiful Valerie (Amanda Seyfried). Valerie is in love with the unsmiling, personality-free woodsman Peter (Shiloh Fernandez), but her parents (Billy Burke and Virginia Madsen) have arranged for her to be married to the wealthy Henry (Max Irons). Word of her betrothal is disrupted by more shocking news: Valerie's sister has been slain by the wolf. The local priest (Lukas Haas) has sent for the Vatican's resident wolf-slayer Solomon (Gary Oldman) who then proceeds to throw the town into a panic as he tells them they don't have a wolf problem, but a ...

Warner Bros. has sent over seven clips from director Catherine Hardwicke's (Twilight, Thirteen) thriller Red Riding Hood. Amanda Seyfried (Letters to Juliet) stars as Valerie, a beautiful young woman torn between a brooding outsider (Shiloh Fernandez) and the wealthy man of her parents’ dreams (Max Irons). Unfortunately, one of them may be the wolf that terrorizes her village. (Such virility is a turn-on, but werewolves are notorious commitment-phobes.) Gary Oldman, Billy Burke, Virginia Madsen, and Julie Christie also star. Hit the jump for the full synopsis and clips:

For decades, the people of the village of Daggerhorn have maintained an uneasy truce with the werewolf, who prowls at every full moon, by offering the beast a monthly animal sacrifice to quench its appetite. But under a blood red moon, the wolf changes the stakes by taking the life of one of their own.

The victim is the older sister of Valerie (Seyfried), a beautiful, young woman, who has just found out that her parents (Burke and Madsen) have arranged for her to marry Henry (Irons), the scion of the town’s wealthiest family. But Valerie wants only Peter (Fernandez), the poor woodcutter she has loved all her life. Unwilling to be parted, the couple was planning to run away together, but, in a horrifying instant, the wolf changes everything.

As the townspeople hunger for revenge, famed werewolf hunter Father Solomon (Oldman) is summoned to Daggerhorn to kill the beast ...

I can't watch the trailer for Red Riding Hood without laughing. It looks like a parody of a real movie with its overly sinister take on the Red Riding Hood fairy tale. I know the Brothers Grimm's original tales were dark, but you're not going to turn "My, what big eyes you have," into a chilling piece of horror dialogue. While the story may turn out to be a problem, cinematographer Mandy Walker has done a solid job capturing the gothic tone that director Catherine Hardwicke (Twilight) wanted to convey.

Hit the jump to check out 43 images from the movie. Red Riding Hood stars Amanda Seyfried, Gary Oldman, Shiloh Fernandez, Billy Burke, Virginia Madsen, and Julie Christie. It opens March 11th.

Warner Bros. has released a new trailer for Red Riding Hood, which opens similarly to the November teaser before it delving deeper into the plot. Amanda Seyfried (Letters to Juliet) stars as Valerie, a beautiful young woman torn between a brooding outsider (Shiloh Fernandez) and the wealthy man of her parents' dreams (Max Irons). Unfortunately, one of them may be the wolf that terrorizes her village. (Such virility is a turn-on, but werewolves are notorious commitment-phobes.) Gary Oldman, Billy Burke, Virginia Madsen, and Julie Christie also star.

Catherine Hardwicke (Twilight) directed the gothic re-imagining of the familiar tale; Red Riding Hood is due in theaters March 11. Watch the trailer after the jump.

Everything looks and sounds so silly, but there's no sense that Hardwicke is playing it any way but straight. Is this camp? A period piece set to nu metal? A Twilight knockoff? I don't know yet. I believe Red Riding Hood could turn out really well, and I'm digging on the snow-covered sets. But I haven't seen greatness in either of the trailers.

Judge for yourself. Watch in HD at Apple.

Today is officially “trailer day” as the recent teaser for Pixar’s Cars 2 and the trailer to Jason Statham’s actioner The Mechanic can attest. Next up is the official premier of the trailer to Catherine Hardwicke’s Red Riding Hood starring the lovely Amanda Seyfried in the titular role. The trailer is actually quite impressive from a visual standpoint, very reminiscent of Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow, what with its creepy Hammer-esque designs, and heavily contrasted colors. It goes without saying the film boasts a decidedly Twilight-ish vibe, complete with leading man Shiloh Fernandez doing his best Robert Pattinson impersonation (he even has the hair).

Red Riding Hood also stars Gary Oldman, Lukas Haas and Virginia Madsen, and is set for release March 11, 2011. Hit the jump to see the trailer, the first poster, and the official synopsis:

Synopsis:
In "Red Riding Hood," Seyfried plays Valerie, a beautiful young woman torn between two men. She is in love with a brooding outsider, Peter (Shiloh Fernandez), but her parents have arranged for her to marry the wealthy Henry (Max Irons). Unwilling to lose each other, Valerie and Peter are planning to run away together when they learn that Valerie's older sister has been killed by the werewolf that prowls the dark forest surrounding their village. For years, the people have maintained an uneasy truce with the beast, offering the creature a monthly animal sacrifice. But under a blood red moon, the wolf has upped the stakes by taking a human life. Hungry for revenge, the ...

The first behind-the-scenes photos from Catherine Hardwicke's Red Riding Hood have surfaced online. The film is a gothic re-imagining of the fairy tale and has the title character (played by Amanda Seyfried) attempting to protect her village from a werewolf. She's joined by Father Soloman (played by Gary Oldman), the "Witchfinder General" whose mission is to find and kill the werewolf.

These photos give you a good sense of the film's costumes and I think they the look pretty amazing. Don't let the fact that the actors are holding food from craft services or iPads distract you. Hit the jump to check out the images. Red Riding Hood is slated to open on March 11, 2011.

Virginia Madsen has signed on to play mother to Amanda Seyfried in Red Riding Hood, a "gothic horror reimagining" of the fairy tale. This is director Catherine Hardwicke's follow-up to the first entry in The Twilight Saga. She's working with a script from Orphan scribe David Leslie Johnson, which (per Variety) is "set in a village haunted by a werewolf." Madsen and Seyfried will be joined by Lukas Haas, Shiloh Fernandez, Julie Christie, and Gary Oldman on screen when March 11, 2011.

Hit the jump for casting details for the Showtime Laura Linney comedy The Big C and the wedding rom-com Jumping the Broom.

According to Deadline, Reid Scott has joined the cast of the cancer-centric dark comedy The Big C, in a "heavily recurring role" as the show's resident oncologist. Linney stars as a "suburban wife and mother who reclaims her life after a terminal cancer diagnosis."

For the sake of brevity, we'll continue to call this one a comedy. But given the subject matter and the network, I would assume The Big C will be on brand with Weeds, Nurse Jackie, and The United States of Tara --- half-hour series centered around strong females that never really go for "haha funny." That's fine by me; Showtime continues to provide great roles for actresses in a medium that is otherwise lacking. The Big C premieres on August 16th.

On the flip side of the somber spectrum, Sony has plenty of reason to celebrate with the light-hearted wedding ceremony at the center of Jumping ...

This is a movie which must be addressed from two different directions: first, as a straight horror film; and second, as an effort that purports to be "based on true events." Lets look at its strictly cinematic role to begin with.

Peter (Martin Donovan) and Sara Campbell (Virginia Madsen) have a problem. Their teenage son, Matt (Kyle Gallner) has a probably terminal cancer. Apart from the disease's fraying their nerves and their marriage, it complicates their raising of Matt's young brother, Billy (Ty Wood), and sister, Mary (Sophi Knight). Fortunately, Sara's niece, Wendy (Amanda Crew) is living with them --- able to provide baby-sitting as needed and, being about Matt's age, friendship for her afflicted cousin. More after the jump:

All of this is necessary, because every day Sara must drive Matt 300 miles round trip to a hospital in Connecticut from the family's New York City home --- a trip made all the worse by Matt's weakness and nausea. At length, it is resolved that the clan will rent a house near the hospital, and the father will spend the weekends with them. Sara must find a suitable house, and thinks she has: a multileveled old colonial mansion of a place. Despite its size and elegance, it is very reasonable. The reason, of course, is that it has a past.

However far away in years that past may be, it is obviously very close in spirit. Strange things begin happening almost immediately --- at first more seen by the audience than the ...

Virginia Madsen has joined the cast of "Father of Invention", the indie comedy from Kevin Spacey's Trigger Street Productions. Spacey plays a down-on-his-luck inventor turned billionaire-inventor who once again finds himself down on his luck when an invention goes horribly awry - that Slap-Chop was always too good to be true. Madsen will play Spacey's wife in the film which is being directed by Trent Cooper ("Larry the Cable Guy: Health Inspector"). "Invention" has already begun filming in New Orleans with co-stars Camilla Belle, Heather Graham, Johnny Knoxville and the great Craig Robinson.
