Director Jorma Taccone Confirms He’s Working on MACGRUBER 2 with Will Forte

In the pantheon of feature films born out of SNL skits, there’s a big hit-and-miss factor; for every Wayne’s World, there’s three It’s Pat’s.  A film version of MacGruber hit theaters in 2010 and any way you slice it, the movie was a disaster at the box office.  Against a budget of $10 million, the film grossed a total of $9.2 million worldwide.  I wasn’t a huge fan of Will Forte’s MacGruber sketch to begin with, so I wasn’t about to go sit through a 90-minute version in theaters.  However, the film hit DVD and I started hearing from trustworthy friends that it was actually good.

After being commanded to watch it multiple times, I finally relented and watched MacGruber myself.  It turns out that the film is actually pretty fantastic.  The jokes are ridiculously out-there, and Forte and director Jorme Taccone got away with making an insane comedy within the studio system.  So it’s with great enthusiasm that I greeted the news today that Taccone and Forte are working on a follow-up to MacGruber that may or may not come to fruition.  Hit the jump for more.

Will Forte and Bruce Dern May Hit the Road for Alexander Payne’s NEBRASKA

Having racked up awards buzz and a rather tidy box office sum with The Descendants, director Alexander Payne is set to ease back into his road-movie wheelhouse with Nebraska. Production on the project has been delayed a couple times in the past months, as Payne worked on the script and searched for the right leads. After names like Robert Duvall, Jack Nicholson and Robert Forster were bandied about, now comes news that the helmer has set his sights on Bruce Dern to play a cantankerous alcoholic and SNL alum Will Forte to occupy the role of his estranged son. The dramedy will see the two taking a car trip to collect on the father’s apparent sweepstakes win. At the moment, offers have not been made to either actor. Hit the jump for more on Nebraska.

TV Casting: Will Forte Leads Fox Pilot REBOUNDING; Carla Gugino Joins Sigourney Weaver in POLITICAL ANIMALS

We’ve got a couple of television casting stories to share with you today. First up, the incredibly funny Will Forte has been tapped to lead the Fox comedy pilot Rebounding. Deadline reports that Forte will play Danny in the uplifting comedy which centers on “a man recovering from the death of his fiancée with the help of the idiots on his pickup basketball team. It’s not exactly MacGruber: The Series, but I could definitely see Forte having fun with the premise. The single-camera pilot comes from writers/executive producers Joe Port and Joe Wiseman (The IT Crowd), executive producer Steve Levitan (Modern Family), and director Jason Winer. Forte has an excellent recurring role on 30 Rock, and while a part of me would genuinely love to see MacGruber turned into a TV show, I’m glad to see Forte is getting the chance to lead a series of his own.

One of the many films to premiere at this year’s Sundance Film Festival was Tim and Eric’s Billion Dollar Movie (which is now playing on VOD and in theaters March 2).  The pic marks the first feature-length film from the comedy duo of Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim and it stars Zach Galifianakis, John C. Reilly, Will Ferrell, Will Forte and Jeff Goldblum.   It’s pretty much what you’re expecting from the oddball team.  For more on the film, here’s the red band and the green band trailer.

During Sundance I was able to sit down with Heidecker, Wareheim and Forte for an extended interview.  We talked about premiering at Sundance, how the project came together, is the movie more scripted than their TV work, their thoughts on VOD, what will be on the DVD/Blu-ray, financing, what’s coming up for the three of them, and a lot more.  Hit the jump to watch.

A full red band trailer for Tim and Eric’s Billion Dollar Movie has gone online. The pic marks the first feature-length film from the comedy duo of Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim. It’s pretty much what you’re expecting from the oddball team. The trailer’s got its fair share of strange moments, and highlights the celebs that pop up throughout the film (Zach Galifianakis, John C. Reilly, Will Ferrell, Will Forte and Jeff Goldblum). If you’re a fan of the show, I’m assuming this trailer will pique your interest. I can appreciate the comedic value of Tim and Eric, but I always feel like I’m on a bad acid trip when watching their stuff (which I guess is the point).

Hit the jump to watch the trailer. The film also stars Robert Loggia and William Atherton. The pic is being featured as part of the “Park City at Midnight” line-up at the Sundance Film Festival and will be available January 27th on VOD. Tim and Eric’s Billion Dollar Movie hits theaters March 2nd.

Will Forte Joins NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH

Saturday Night Live alum Will Forte has joined the ever-expanding cast of director Akiva Schaffer’s (who has written and acted on SNL and directed Hot Rod) comedy Neighborhood Watch. Forte will star alongside Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, Jonah Hill, Rosemarie DeWitt, Nicholas Braun and Richard Ayoade in the pic which centers on a group of adult males who form a neighborhood watch group for the real purpose of enjoying nag-free male-bonding time (an admirable endeavor, no doubt). As the story goes, the group inadvertently uncovers a plot to destroy the world.

THR reports that Forte will play a character named Sergeant Bressman in the film, but stops short of giving further details on the role. In addition to Neighborhood Watch, the actor also has roles opposite Adam Sandler, Andy Samberg, Leighton Meester and Susan Sarandon in the comedy I Hate You, Dad which is due out on June 15th, 2012. He can also be seen in Rock of Ages alongside Tom Cruise and Bryan Cranston on June 1st, 2012 and has a part in one of my own most anticipated films, Tim and Eric’s Billion Dollar Movie, with Will Ferrell, Zach Galifianakis, John C. Reilly, Jason Sudeikis and more. Neighborhood Watch opens on July 27th, 2012.

A GOOD OLD FASHIONED ORGY Review

I didn’t want to write this review because it would involve me giving more thought to repulsive, selfish characters who populate a comedy that’s almost entirely devoid of laughs.  There’s something fascinating about a movie that sets up jokes and then forgets to deliver a punchline.  And because awful character delivering non-jokes isn’t enough, the film is saddled with limp, thoughtless direction that misses every opportunity for a laugh.   When A Good Old Fashioned isn’t being clichéd, it’s being dull, and sometimes it’s both, but it’s hardly ever funny.

The trailer for writers/directors Alex Gregory and Peter Huyck’s comedy A Good Old Fashioned Orgy is now available online. Starring Jason Sudeikis, Will Forte, Lucy Punch, Leslie Bibb, Lindsay Sloane, Tyler Labine, and Lake Bell, the film tells the story of a 30 year-old man/child (Sudeikis) who decides to throw one last bash at the Hampton residence his parents are on the verge of selling. Judging from the trailer, the pic almost looks like an uninterrupted barrage of partying and general immaturity. In short, I’m looking forward to it. That said, I can’t help but wonder how I can get my hands on one of those “Labor Day Orgy” t-shirts.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer. A Good Old Fashioned Orgy opens to select theaters this September 2nd.

Will Forte has joined Adam Shankman’s adaptation of the stage musical Rock of Ages. The film tells the story of a small town girl (Julianne Hough) who falls in love with a larger-than-life rocker (Tom Cruise) set against the backdrop of the 1980’s music scene, featuring songs from the likes of Journey, Foreigner, Styx, and REO Speedwagon.

THR reports that Forte will play the head anchor of a network news show in a role that was created specifically for the film adaptation. No word on whether or not the role calls for copious amounts of throat ripping. The cast now includes Cruise, Hough, Russell Brand, Paul Giamatti, Alec Baldwin, Malin Akerman, Bryan Cranston, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Mary J. Blige and Diego Gonzalez Boneta. Rock of Ages opens June 1st, 2012.

Just typing the above synopsis takes me back to the countless summer nights I spent not participating in orgies in the Hamptons.

In addition to Sudeikis, A Good Old Fashioned Orgy also stars Will Forte, Leslie Bibb, Lake Bell, and Nick Kroll. The film premieres tomorrow night at the Tribeca Film Festival and will be released in select cities this September. Hit the jump to check out the poster, images, and a brief synopsis.

Written by Ailbhe Keogan and Steph Green, with Green directing, the film also stars Maxine Peake, Brian F. O’Byrne and Sharon Horgan and is set to start filming in Ireland in May.

Deadline also reports that Forte is joining the cast of the Fox animated series Allen Gregory, from co-creator/executive producer Jonah Hill. The show tells the story of a freakishly smart, internationally acclaimed 7-year-old kid (Hill) who’s about to take on the task of attending elementary school with kids his own age. Forte will voice various characters alongside Hill and actor French Stewart.

Zach Galifianakis, Will Ferrell, John C. Reilly, Robert Loggia, Jeff Goldblum, Will Forte, William Atherton Confirmed for TIM AND ERIC’S BILLION DOLLAR MOVIE

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: March 2nd, 2011 at 8:06 pm

Rumor came in last week that John C. Reilly will star (with an impressive cast of supporting players) in Tim and Eric’s Billion Dollar Movie, the first feature-length film from comedy duo Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim.  Reilly is indeed on board, joined by Zach Galifianakis, Will Ferrell,  Robert Loggia, Jeff Goldblum, Will Forte, and William Atherton.  Sadly, the rumor that Harrison Ford will make an appearance is false.  I’m disappointed that Bob Odenkirk’s name didn’t make it from the rumored cast to this updated list, but I hope that’s merely an oversight.

Heidecker and Wareheim revealed the plot for Billion Dollar Movie: their characters “literally get a billion dollars to make a movie, and we make it, and things go awry, and Tim and I just decide to get out of Hollywood and become businessmen in an abandoned mall.”  Principal photography started Friday on what is by far the biggest Tim and Eric production ever.  Read what Heidecker and Wareheim had to say about the transition after the jump.

Rumor: John C. Reilly to Star in TIM AND ERIC’S BILLION DOLLAR MOVIE; Zach Galifianakis, Will Ferrell, Bob Odenkirk, Harrison Ford, Will Forte in Talks

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: February 22nd, 2011 at 9:44 pm

It is not hyperbole to state that Adult Swimmers Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim (Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!) present the most bizarre comic sensibility that I’ve ever encountered.  To be honest, I get flustered under prolonged exposure to Tim and Eric bits.  But I always admire two things about the comedy duo: 1) the raw novelty of the Tim and Eric brand and 2) their friends.  A prime example of the latter: John C. Reilly.

/Film picked up a rumor from The Tracking Board that Reilly is poised to star in Tim and Eric’s Billion Dollar Movie, which is a great fit.  Reilly has redefined the latest iteration of his career playing the odd duck, but his affable personality streamlines the weird for those as unhip as myself.  Even better, it appears Zach Galifianakis, Will Ferrell, Bob Odenkirk, Harrison Ford, and Will Forte are in talks for roles of a presumably smaller nature.  Exclude Ford, and the rest are identifiable friends of the show (Ferrell will reportedly produce with Adam McKay), so the rumors are logical.  The idea of Tim and Eric at feature length is daunting, but it’s hard to go too wrong if these folk sign on.  (Just imagine what Heidecker and Wareheim might do with the guttural vocals of acting legend Harrison Ford!)

After the jump, watch an Awesome Show featuring Reilly as solitary advisor Dr. Steve Brule.
