Joel Edgerton and Jessica Chastain will star in The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: His and The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: Hers.  The love story explores a New York City couple’s relationship during a difficult time in their marriage from the perspectives of the restaurant owner husband and of the wife, who goes back to college.  Presumably, “His” will be from Edgerton’s perspective and “Hers” will be from Chastain’s.  Ned Benson‘s two scripts sound like an intriguing premise, and it doesn’t hurt having Edgerton and Chastain as your leads.  William Hurt is in talks to join the cast.

Variety adds that the films will be stand-alone, so it’s not like one is the sequel to the other.  Having them released at the same time and available to view in either order is an exciting prospect.  Myriad Pictures plans to shop the project around the Berlin Film Festival next week.  Hit the jump for the press release and a quick refresher on Edgerton and Chastain’s upcoming projects.

William Hurt in Talks to Join Stephanie Meyer Adaptation THE HOST

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: December 6th, 2011 at 12:53 pm

As production on director Andrew Niccol’s (In Time) adaptation of the Stephanie Meyer sci-fi novel The Host nears closer, casting continues and now it looks like William Hurt may be joining the project. The film stars Saoirse Ronan as Melanie, a young woman whose body is invaded by an alien name Wanderer. Max Irons plays a young man in love with Melanie and Jake Abel plays a young man in love with Wanderer (super creepy/strange love triangle!). EW reports that Hurt is in talks to play Melanie’s eccentric uncle Jeb, a man who serves as one of the leaders of the human survivalists who are battling the alien invasion.

Niccol wrote and will direct the pic, which sounds intriguing despite the Twilight-esque romantic angle. The cast is impressive, and Niccol never disappoints when it comes to unique storytelling (though the execution of that unique storytelling is sometimes uneven). Hit the jump to read a synopsis of the novel. The Host opens March 29th, 2013.

THE AVENGERS “Sneak Peek” and Marvel One-Shot: “The Consultant” from the Upcoming THOR Blu-ray

As review copies of the upcoming Thor Blu-ray are going out, it’s not surprising that some of the disc’s noteworthy extras are being posted online.  First up, there’s the “Road to The Avengers“, a sneak peek which is almost entirely worthless.  There’s no footage from the movie, and it’s mostly a puff piece where talking heads celebrate the scope of the picture and how great it is to work with everyone.  The only moment of any value is when director Joss Whedon says that the idea that fuels the film is this group of superheroes becoming a team and “finding what they didn’t have before.”  The other special feature is a short film, “Marvel One-Shot: The Consultant”.  If you ever wanted to see the mundane behind-the-scenes activities of S.H.I.E.L.D., you’ll love this short, which feels like a fan film except they got Clark Gregg to star in it.

Hit the jump to check out the videos.  Thor hits DVD, Blu-ray, and 3D Blu-ray on September 13th.  The Avengers opens in 3D on May 4, 2012.

BROADCAST NEWS Criterion Blu-ray Review

by Andre Dellamorte    Posted: February 19th, 2011 at 3:18 am

Watching Broadcast News twenty years after release it’s interesting to note that the film hasn’t been vaulted into the category of films like Network or A Face in the Crowd for being a prophetic film about what’s happened to journalism. Perhaps because it cuts deeper to the bone. And though it may not be the go-to for the state of journalism, it’s just as on-point as any satire of TV journalism. Holly Hunter stars as Jane Craig, a segment producer for network television’s evening news. She’s good friends and colleagues with Aaron Altman (Albert Brooks), who’s nursed a crush on her so long that it is a habit of their friendship, and their platonic bond is disrupted when Tom Grunick (William Hurt) enters the pictures. He’s the handsome but vacuous new talent, who knows he’s out of his depth but also knows how to anchor. My review of the Blu-ray Criterion edition of Broadcast News follows after the jump.

THX 1138 and LOST IN SPACE Blu-ray Reviews

by Andre Dellamorte    Posted: October 1st, 2010 at 9:03 am

There are both rational and irrational reasons for hating the prequel trilogy. With the rise of Red Letter Media, that internet phenomenon that has made a name shit-talking the Star Trek: Next Generations films, and The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones, there is a more present sense of disappointment with the Lucas empire- but it’s something that has been haunting Lucas about a couple days after people started seeing TPM and word set in. But as not great as the prequels were, there’s other reasons to be bummed about those films besides just fan service. Until he made the prequel trilogy, George Lucas had a stunning cinematic record as a director. His first film THX 1138 is a classic, and deserves to be appreciated. Another reason to be disappointed is that he led the way for films like Lost in Space, the 1998 warm-up for the prequel trilogy. Lucas whetted a lot of appetites, but the man also showed a talent for the game. My review of both THX 1138 and Lost in Space on Blu-ray follow the jump.

Today brings the first images from Ralph Fiennes’ adaptation of Shakespeare’s Coriolanus, a family-political tragedy set in ancient Rome.  Making his directorial debut, Fiennes transplants the action to contemporary times, which explains the modern military garb in the photos.  Fiennes stars as the titular character opposite Gerard Butler, who plays an army commander and nemesis of Coriolanus.  The cast also includes William Hurt, Eddie Marsan, Jessica Chastain, and Vanessa Redgrave.

ROBIN HOOD Trailer #3 – Universal Ramps up the Action

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub    Posted: May 10th, 2010 at 12:32 pm

Universal Pictures has released a third trailer for director Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood that’s sole purpose is to sell you on the action.  Using fast cuts and minimal dialogue, this short minute something trailer doesn’t waste any of its time trying to sell you on the story.  Instead, it’s only focus is to let you know the people behind Gladiator have made another movie. And it works.

I caught a screening last week and liked the movie a lot more than some of my peers.  But…I will say there is a scene towards the end that plays like a studio note or the manager of one of the main cast said, “wouldn’t it be great if…” and they put it in the movie.  The scene makes no sense and it’s really bad.  Not bad enough for me to say don’t see Robin Hood.  It’s just a shame the scene made the final cut as the rest of the movie worked.  It’s not as good as Gladiator, but it’s worth seeing.

ROBIN HOOD Will Kick off Cannes Film Festival

Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood, starring Russell Crowe, is set to open the Cannes Film Festival and will be screening out of competition on May 12.  Robin Hood also stars Cate Blanchett, Max von Sydow, Mark Strong, and William Hurt, and depicts the early beginnings of the Robin Hood story.  LA Confidential screenwriter Brian Helgeland wrote the script, and Imagine Entertainment’s Brian Grazer produced with Ridley Scott and his company Scott Free.  Ridley Scott’s previous films screened at Cannes were 1977′s The Duellists and Thelma and Louise in 1991.  Robin Hood will be released worldwide on May 14, which can’t come soon enough since it looks awesome.  Anytime we get to see Russell Crowe kick serious ass is great and should happen more often, and the film looks like it’ll be a graphic and unique take on the story.

Opening tomorrow, in limited release, is The Yellow Handkerchief.  The movie stars Kristen Stewart , William Hurt, Maria Bello and Eddie Redmayne and it’s about three strangers who take a road trip through post Katrina Louisiana. Along the way they learn about one another and why they agreed to take a ride with a complete stranger.

If you’re looking for a big budget Hollywood spectacle, this isn’t for you.  But if you’d like to see actors showcasing their abilities and a movie about real people trying to find their way, you might want to take a chance on The Yellow Handkerchief.

To help promote the film, I recently spoke to Kristen Stewart and Eddie Redmayne.  We talked about promoting the movie after filming it years ago, working with William Hurt, did they go after the project or did it come to them, and I asked Stewart what she thinks about Twilight possibly going 3D.   Watch the interview after the jump:

To help promote the film, I recently got to participate in a roundtable interview with Kristen Stewart and Eddie Redmayne.  Since I also did a TV interview with the two of them (I’ll be posting it Wednesday), I only transcribed what Stewart said.  But if you’d like to hear what Stewart and Redmayne had to say, after the jump you can listen to the audio.

During the interview, Stewart talked about the roles she’s being offered, how she chooses what part she takes, The Runaways, Breaking Dawn, and a lot more:

William Hurt Says He Improv’d His Scene With Robert Downey Jr. in THE INCREDIBLE HULK and He’s Not in IRON MAN 2 or THOR

Earlier today I got to participate in a roundtable interview with William Hurt for his upcoming movie The Yellow Handkerchief.  While I’ll have a lot more on the film as it gets closer to release, one of things William Hurt discussed with us was his work on The Incredible Hulk and whether or not Marvel has asked him to reprise Gen. Thaddeus ‘Thunderbolt’ Ross on Iron Man 2 or Thor.

According to Hurt, he’s not in either film, but “if they call me I’ll answer.”

I’m not surprised to learn this, as his character doesn’t have a place in either film. But if the Hulk ends up in The Avengers, I wouldn’t be surprised to see General Ross return.

What was more interesting to learn earlier today was that everything he said at the end of The Incredible Hulk with Robert Downey Jr. was improv’d!  Hit the jump for more:
