With director Steven Soderbergh’s spy-action pic Haywire opening this weekend, I recently got to speak with most of the cast to talk about making the movie. Starring MMA fighter Gina Carano as a burned spy who takes revenge against her handlers, Haywire also stars Channing Tatum, Michael Fassbender, Ewan McGregor, Michael Angarano, Antonio Banderas, Michael Douglas, and Bill Paxton. I’ve seen Haywire twice now and it’s fantastic. On top of Carano’s star-making performance, the action scenes are some of the best I’ve seen in years. It’s absolutely something you should see in a theater.
During my interview with Carano we talked about how she went from being an MMA fighter to getting cast in a Soderbergh film, what was the hardest stunt and what made her the most nervous, and deleted scenes. In addition, as some of you may have already seen, after watching Haywire the second time all I could think about was how Carano should play Wonder Woman. So while I usually start off my interviews asking a karaoke question, with this one, I started with what she thought of Wonder Woman and if anyone had asked her to play the part yet. Hit the jump to watch.

There’s no need to keep searching for the right actress, Warner Bros.; Gina Carano is Wonder Woman. While you might think I’m joking around….I’m not. That’s because after watching director Steven Soderbergh’s awesome spy-action pic Haywire twice, I really believe Carano is who you’re looking for. After everyone gets the chance to see her kick ass next week (the pic opens January 20), I’m extremely confident that fandom will agree with me. Hire a new writer to craft a script with Carano in mind; they’ll be inspired. I think one of the reasons Wonder Woman hasn’t come together is you didn’t know who to cast. Thankfully, the search is over.
Being serious, after watching Haywire the second time, I kept thinking Carano would be great as Wonder Woman and it was on my mind when I sat down to talk to her a few days ago. While I usually start with my karaoke question, I decided to ask what she thought of Wonder Woman and if anyone had asked her to play the part yet. Watch what she had to say after the jump.

Joss Whedon was attached to write and direct an adaptation of Wonder Woman, but the fell apart in February 2007, which worked out because A) he got to do The Avengers, and B) it sounds like his Wonder Woman story was terrible. In a recent interview, Whedon says that his take on the character would have the Amazonian princess be a naive globetrotter who is overwhelmed by man’s inhumanity to man, but thanks to love-interest Steve Trevor, she learns how to deal with it. I understand Whedon didn’t want to make Flying Buffy, but I’m a little disappointed that a guy who knows how to write strong female characters would plot a script where the female lead can’t find her way without a man telling her to basically grow-up.
Hit the jump for what Whedon had to say about his Wonder Woman movie.

I recently had the great privilege to sit down with Nicolas Winding Refn, the director of one of my favorite films of the year, Drive. As with most of my interviews, my goal is to try and find out new things and not have him rehash the same thing he has answered numerous times. You have a limited amount of time, and likely one go, so why not ask something you don’t already know the answer to? So, that’s exactly what I did. Along the way Refn spoke about the fact that he doesn’t have a driver’s license, his reasoning for going with practical effects, and how his fetish with Wonder Woman came about. So hit the jump to read what he had to say.

After the past couple years, Nicolas Winding Refn has become one of my favorite directors. I’ve enjoyed the Pusher trilogy, Bronson, Valhalla Rising, and his latest film, Drive, is my favorite flick of 2011 thus far. Refn is currently at work on the indie drama Only God Forgives with Ryan Gosling, but he’s also set to direct the remake of the 1976 sci-fi flick Logan’s Run (also starring Gosling), and he’s had a vision for a Wonder Woman flick he’s wanted to do for years. At this weekend’s Empire Big Screen convention, he said during the Q&A [via The Playlist]:
“I would love to make Wonder Woman. And I also think that Christina Hendricks would be the perfect Wonder Woman, but Warner Bros haven’t called yet. But I’m getting closer with Logan’s Run. I think someone said to me in a meeting that if I get Logan’s Run right, then I’ll get ‘Wonder Woman.”
I think “right” means “a box office hit” so here’s hoping because a Wonder Woman movie is long overdue and I’d love to see Refn’s take on the material. Also, if you’ve seen Drive (or don’t mind spoilers) and want to know more details about the making of the film, I highly recommend click through to The Playlist. Drive hits theaters on September 16th.

Director Nicolas Winding Refn is currently receiving rave reviews for his latest film Drive, which just played unbelievably well at the Los Angeles Film Festival (our own Ramses calls it one of the best films of the year). While at the festival, he was asked about his version of Wonder Woman that he’s been trying to get off the ground for a couple of years now. When talking about the superhero flick, he added that Christina Hendricks—who has a supporting role in Drive—would be his top choice for the titular role (via Vulture): “If I get to do it, she’s going to be it.”
While no Wonder Woman film is currently in development at Warner Bros., Refn is certainly building up quite the resume, so he may just get the chance to take on the character sometime down the road. And Hendricks is certainly up for it, as she told Rachel Ray last year, “I’ve been wanting to wear that outfit my whole life.” Refn is currently looking to make the tentpole remake of Logan’s Run his next film, with Ryan Gosling set to star. Hit the jump to read some of Refn’s previous thoughts about his take on Wonder Woman.

Personally, I’m one of those who wasn’t all that disappointed when NBC decided not to pick up David E. Kelley’s new pilot for Wonder Woman, especially after seeing that ridiculous suit that Adrianne Palicki was supposed to wear as the superhero (even after the changes to the wardrobe). However, for those desperate to see anything from the now archived pilot for the series, we have literally just a few seconds of Palicki looking somewhat intimidating, but mostly just kind of sexy, from the one and only episode shot for the potential series. It’s nothing to get too excited about, but if you really must see Wonder Woman in motion, here’s your chance. Hit the jump to check out the incredibly brief clip.

In case you missed last week’s inaugural “Top 5″ installment, fear not. You need only know that we’re introducing this new feature with the hopes of giving readers a concise glance at some of the site’s best content from the preceding week. This week, we’re bringing you a look at the Wonder Woman television pilot that NBC said “thanks, but no thanks” to, our visit to the set of the Jason Bateman and Ryan Reynolds comedy The Change-Up, the first trailer and poster for David Fincher’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo adaptation, Matt’s X-Men: First Class review, and Steve’s video interview with legendary director Richard Donner (Superman, The Goonies).

At the conclusion of Geoff Johns and Andy Kubert’s 5-issue miniseries Flashpoint, DC Comics has announced it will reboot its universe and re-number each of its titles to begin at issue #1. In a letter from DC Senior Sales VP Bob Wayne to comic retailers, Wayne explains that the publisher will perform some character alterations with regards to “appearance, origin, and age” in an attempt to bring DC’s classic group of characters into a “more modern, diverse DC Universe.” The reboot will officially be underway on Wednesday, August 31st when DC will only release two titles: Flashpoint #5 and Justice League #1 to be written by Johns with art from Jim Lee.
In addition to the reboot, DC announced that the August 31st release will also be a landmark date for the digital distribution of comics as it will be the first time that either of the two major comic publishers (DC and Marvel) will release new titles digitally on the same day as their physical release. David E. Kelley’s Wonder Woman pilot has been the subject of public scrutiny pretty much ever since its inception. After considering the completed pilot, NBC decided to pass on picking up the show, and from the looks of it humanity was saved from yet another very bad TV series. All that being said, almost everyone wants to actually see this pilot in order to assess just how terrible it is. Well, it’s apparently been making the rounds, and some stills from the pilot as well as a review have popped up. Hit the jump to check out the images, as well as some excerpts from the review. Wonder Woman starred Adrianne Palacki, Elizabeth Hurley and Cary Elwes.

NBC joined Fox in the early pickup/renewal game last night with series orders for Whitney, Up All Night, Smash, and Prime Suspect. So far, the news continues accentuate the positive — only renewals and more pilot pickups, no cancellations. The most confident reports indicate NBC will renew Parenthood for a full third season order.
More circumstantial reports update on the fates of Chuck and Harry’s Law. This makes the fourth May in a row where Chuck has lived on the bubble, and somehow a fifth season is very much in the works. The deal isn’t official, but all signs suggest Chuck will continue to brighten the airwaves through 2012 with a 13-episode order. Meanwhile, NBC is expected to renew Harry’s Law for a second season. This will give creator David E. Kelly something to do next year, since NBC has reportedly passed on his Wonder Woman pilot.
Details on series orders for The Playboy Club, Awake, and Grimm.

After last night’s huge influx of news from Fox about series pick-ups, renewals and cancellations, it’s now NBC’s turn to announce some of their new series that we can look forward to in the fall. As of now there seems to be some dissension amongst the news outlets online as to whether or not Wonder Woman will actually get picked up, and other potential series like The Playboy Club are rumored for a pick-up but we haven’t heard anything official yet.
After the jump, check out the four new series that have definitely been picked up to premiere sometime this fall including a new sitcom from stand-up comedian Whitney Cummings, another comedy from Christina Applegate, a Broadway musical series from producer Steven Spielberg, and the stateside remake of the British crime drama Prime Suspect.

When NBC released the first official image of Adrianne Palicki in costume for David E. Kelley’s Wonder Woman, the response to the costume was scorn and derision. But NBC was listening and the costume has been partially re-designed. The top-half still looks plastic and shiny, but the pants have been changed to resemble actual pants and a nifty pattern of gold stars runs up the sides. The color of the boots has also been changed from blue to the traditional red.
Hit the jump to check out the improved costume. I still think the show will be a disaster, but that’s only because I think Kelley is absolutely the wrong person to be working on this show (or really any show).

Christopher Nolan has publicly stated that The Dark Knight Rises will be his final Batman film, and Warner Bros. is already looking ahead to the future of the franchise. As we reported last night, the studio is currently planning a Justice League movie for 2013 and Warner Bros. president Jeff Robinov tells Hero Complex that scripts are being written for Flash and Wonder Woman (the Wonder Woman project would exist separately from the upcoming NBC show). But most intriguing is what the studio plans to do with its marquee superhero, Batman:
“We have the third Batman, but then we’ll have to reinvent Batman…” says Robinov. “Chris Nolan and [producing partner and wife] Emma Thomas will be producing it, so it will be a conversation with them about what the next phase is.”
Hit the jump for my thoughts on the future of the Batman franchise.

We now have our first look at Adrianne Palicki in costume for David E. Kelley’s upcoming Wonder Woman TV series. The look? None more pleathery. While I assumed that the TV show would go with a more natural looking costume along the lines of Jim Lee’s recent redesign, it appears that the show will go with a more old-school/we-bought-this-off-the-rack-at-Party-City approach. However, unlike the traditional Wonder Woman costume, this one will have pants. They’re tight, clearly uncomfortable pants that probably squeak every time she moves, but it’s a step up from the granny panties of Lynda Carter’s costume of the 1970s TV series. The costume for the new TV series also, ahem, “lifts and separates.”
Hit the jump to check out Palicki in costume. The pilot, which also stars Elizabeth Hurley and Carey Elwes, is currently filming.
