Michael Cera Interview YOUTH IN REVOLT

Canadian actor Michael Cera made his first major impact on American comedy audiences with his role as teenager George Michael Bluth on the cult TV comedy Arrested Development. Since then, he has gone on to memorable roles in such films as Year One, Superbad and Juno, each time bringing his unique brand of comedy to his performance. In his latest film, Youth in Revolt, he takes on two characters, aspiring novelist and nice guy Nick Twisp, and man of action Francois Dilinger.

Along with talking about the experience of playing a dual role at the film’s press day, Michael Cera also previewed what it was like for him to play an action hero in Scott Pilgrim vs. The World and updated the status of the Arrested Development feature film. YEAR ONE Blu-ray Review

It has often been said that a film is not simply the sum of its parts. Well in “Year One”, starring Jack Black and Michael Cera, featuring a slew of star cameos, and directed by Harold Ramis, this is proven true. This not very funny comedy is not simply the sum of its parts. It’s much less. We know Jack Black can be funny. We know Michael Cera can be funny. We know Harold Ramis can write, direct AND be funny. However, these talents just fail to add up and as a consequence, “Year One” is not only a bit of an incomprehensible mess, it’s also not funny. Hit the jump for the rest of my review.

Weekend Box Office Report – THE PROPOSAL Takes Number One with $34 Million

Conventional wisdom puts Sandra Bullock as one of the only female movie stars who is a legitimate box office draw.  Until Friday, however, this conventional wisdom was kind of hard to prove.  Though Bullock’s films, especially those that fall in the romantic comedy category, have performed well in the long run, a surprising number of those films never got out of the $15 million dollar range on their opening weekends.  New entry “The Proposal” handily bucked that trend with a three day total of $34 million off of 3,056 runs.  The Disney release co-starring Ryan Reynolds (who, incidentally, already has a much-better opening under his belt thanks to “X-Men Origins: Wolverine”) easily beat back competition from the week’s other comedies, including Sony’s “Year One” and holdover hit “The Hangover”, to claim preeminence at the weekend box-office.

Friday Box Office – THE PROPOSAL Sees a More Than Modest Debut with $12.4 Million

Another week of weak sauce at the box office has led to another surprise upset.  On Thursday it looked as if it would be a three-way fight for the top spot as “The Hangover” put its two-week winning streak up against new comedy challengers “The Proposal” and “Year One”.  In this lackluster June all three films were expected to bring in weekend totals in the $20 million range.  Instead, it was a fight to see who would come in second as Disney’s “The Proposal” became the clear box-office winner with over $12 million in grosses. This makes the film the biggest opener of Sandra Bullock’s career and puts it on track for a weekend take above $30 million.  It’s still anyone’s race for number two as “The Hangover” and Sony’s “Year One” both brought in around $8.5 million.  Check back tomorrow to see who gets the upper hand…

David Cross Exclusive Video Interview YEAR ONE

Opening today is director Harold Ramis’ new comedy “Year One”. To help promote the film, our partners at Omelete were invited to New York City to interview everyone involved and they sent me. So thanks to them, after the jump you can watch my exclusive video interview with David Cross.

During the interview we talked about what it’s like to do press all day, the incredible sets that were built for the film, if he had a favorite Bible story, and, of course, I asked about the “Arrested Development” movie.

So thanks to them, after the jump you can watch our exclusive video interview with Michael Cera and Jack Black.

During the interview, we talked about Brazil, working for Harold Ramis and Judd Apatow, the huge sets that were built for the film and the costumes. Also, Jack gave me an update on “Gulliver’s Travels”, Michael talked about “Scott Pilgrim”, and they talked about massages. Seriously.

YEAR ONE Review

I know I was laughing throughout “Year One” but I think it’s only because I have a good sense of humor and I enjoy the rush of endorphins that laughter provides.  Trying to remember what exactly I laughed at, I couldn’t tell you.  It’s a film that vanishes from your memory the second you leave the theatre and you’re left wondering what happened to the last hour and forty minutes and why your pants are missing (I have recently been informed that I am no longer invited to screenings of Sony films).

This Friday, director Harold Ramis’ new comedy “Year One” hits theatres. So to help promote the film, I spent the past two days in New York City as a reporter for our partner website Omelete.  In the coming days I’ll be posting the full interviews, but with all the talk about another “Ghostbusters” movie floating around the Internet, I figured I should post what he told me right now.

The highlight: if the script for “Ghostbusters 3″ turns out as good as everyone hopes, they’re all in. Even Bill Murray!

Opening next weekend is director Harold Ramis’ “Year One”. The film stars Jack Black and Michael Cera as a couple of lazy hunter-gatherers that are banished from their primitive village and are forced to set off on an epic journey through the ancient world.

The screenplay is by Harold Ramis & Gene Stupnitsky & Lee Eisenberg (“The Office”) from a story by Harold Ramis. The film is produced by Harold Ramis, Judd Apatow, and Clayton Townsend and it also stars David Cross and Hank Azaria.
