Zach Galifianakis and director James Bobin (The Muppets) are a match made in heaven, to the degree that I had to check IMDB to see if Galifianakis ever hopped over from his HBO show Bored to Death for a guest spot on Bobin’s HBO show, Flight of the Conchords. Nope. But the pair may make up for the lost opportunity on Paramount’s feature adaptation of A Confederacy of Dunces. Vulture hears Galifianakis is attached to star as Ignatius Reilly and Bobin is in talks to direct. Scott Rudin (Moneyball) will produce, and Phil Johnston (Cedar Rapids) is reportedly working on the screenplay.
That’s quite a lineup, but Confederacy of Dunces has a long history of trying and repeatedly failing to become a movie. Harold Ramis set up the first attempt in 1982, but was derailed when his Ignatius, John Belushi, died. The role subsequently passed from John Candy to Chris Farley to John Goodman over the years, but never stuck. The most recent iteration was led by Will Ferrell and director David Gordon Green, but fell by the wayside at Paramount. When asked what happened to it, Ferrell could only respond, “It’s a mystery. For some reason that’s a very scary project for people to take on.” Hit the jump for a synopsis of John Kennedy Toole‘s seemingly unadaptable novel.

Earlier this week, we showed you a couple of fake campaign ads for Jay Roach‘s comedy The Campaign starring Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis. Today, Warner Bros. has released the first trailer and poster. The film centers on an incumbent candidate (Ferrell) who doesn’t expect to be opposed in his run for a fifth-term, but he finds an unexpected challenger in the unassuming and dim-witted Marty Huggins (Galifianakis). I was hoping that the trailer would deliver more laughs than the campaign ads, but no dice. Yes, there’s some baby-punching at the end, but overall this looks like another weak comic effort from Roach.

Warner Bros. has set up two Facebook sites to promote Jay Roach‘s upcoming comedy The Campaign. Will Ferrell plays politician Cam Brady, who is squaring off his political rival, Marty Huggins (Zach Galifianakis). Each candidate now has a Facebook site along with campaign ads that provide the first clips from the movie. Sadly, these glimpses are pretty disappointing. In a year where we’ve seen staggering stupidity from Republican presidential candidates, The Campaign seems to traffic more in malapropisms and predictable political sparring. Hopefully, future glimpses of the film will feature better jokes.

It’s been far too longer since Zach Galifianakis graced us with a new episode of his Funny or Die web-series Between Two Ferns. For those unfamiliar with Between Two Ferns, each episode has Galifianakis asking another celebrity strange and embarrassing questions on a Public Access-style set. The show’s guests (who are in on the joke) have included Ben Stiller, Steve Carell, Jennifer Aniston, and Charlize Theron. The last episode was in May 2011 when Galifianakis sat down with Will Ferrell, but now Between Two Ferns will return in a big way.
On the podcast “Comedy Bang Bang” [via Vulture] Scott Aukerman, who directed most of the Between Two Ferns episodes, announced that Comedy Central will air the one-off, half-hour episode Between Two Ferns: A Fairytale of New York before the Comedy Awards on May 6th. The show will include guests such as Jon Stewart, Tina Fey, and Richard Branson. Prepare for greatness by hitting the jump and watching a few of the best Between Two Ferns episodes.

We’ve got some new, high resolution images to share from a couple of anticipated 2012 releases to share today. First up, a new batch of pics from Steven Soderbergh’s male stripper movie Magic Mike has been released. Loosely based on star Channing Tatum’s early days as a stripper, the Haywire actor plays mentor to a young protégé played by Alex Pettyfer. Joining in on the shirtless fun is a swell supporting cast that includes Matthew McConaughey, Matt Bomer, Joe Manganiello, Olivia Munn, Riley Keough, Cody Horn and Adam Rodriguez. The film opens on June 29th.
Additionally, we’ve got two high resolution images (one of them new) from the political comedy The Campaign (previously titled Dog Fight). We’ve already seen some fairly ridiculous set photos featuring Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis as two North Carolina politicians who each have Presidential aspirations and are vying for a congressional seat in their district. The new image here gives us a look at supporting players Jason Sudeikis and Dylan McDermott. The film opens on August 10th.

The Shrek film series has been pretty terrible for a while now. When the first film came out it was exciting and new, and seemed to suggest a Looney Tunes approach to the newfangled trend of CG animation. Alas, subsequent entries were terrible. They’ll probably go back to the Shrek well again, but until then, they’ve given us Puss in Boots, which is better than (though indebted to) the Shrek sequels by a wide margin. Antonio Banderas stars as the titular Puss, a womanizing feline who’s known as a great thief. Here he partners with Kitty Softpaws (Salma Hayek) and Humpty Dumpty (Zach Galifianakis) to plant the beanstalk seeds owned by Jack and Jill (Billy Bob Thorton, Amy Sedaris). Our review of the Blu-ray of Puss in Boots follows after the jump.

Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner has been trying for years to get his feature film debut You Are Here into production. Weiner will direct from his own script, which centers on “childhood best friends who go on a road trip after one of them inherits significant coin following the death of his father.” Back in 2009 (when the childhood friends were roommates), the movie was set to star Jennifer Aniston, Bradley Cooper, and Zach Galifianakis. Almost a year later, the movie had lined up a new cast featuring Jack Black, Matt Dillon, and Renée Zellweger. Today, Variety reports that the movie now has Galifianakis back on board to play the part he was attached to in 2009. He’ll now be co-starring with Owen Wilson, and Amy Poehler is in talks to co-star.

About a month ago, we brought you these set photos from The Campaign (previously known as Dog Fight), starring Will Ferrell (Old School) and Zach Galifianakis (The Hangover). Now, we have the first official image from the movie which features Ferrell and Galifianakis’ characters as political opponents posing for a photograph. The plot of The Campaign follows Cam Brady (Ferrell) and Marty Huggins (Galifianakis), two North Carolina politicians who each have Presidential aspirations and are vying for a congressional seat in their district. This image isn’t as colorful as the previous set photos, but Galifianakis’ awkwardness is shining through loud and clear.
Directed by Jay Roach (Meet the Parents), The Campaign also stars Jason Sudeikis, Dylan McDermott, Brian Cox, John Lithgow and Dan Aykroyd. Look for The Campaign to appear in theaters on August 10th. All’s well that end’s well. Earlier today Warner Bros. announced a May 2013 release date for The Hangover Part III, and now a press release has been sent out that confirms filming on the conclusion to Todd Phillips’ trilogy is targeted to start this September. Phillips has been talking up the concluding chapter since The Hangover Part II came out, and last we heard stars Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis and Ed Helms were poised for a major salary increase to reprise their roles. Everyone is now set to return in order to close out the trilogy, and Phillips promises fans will be surprised by their “fitting conclusion to our three-part opera of mayhem, despair and bad decisions.” I sincerely hope that means deviating from the first film’s formula that was directly copied in the sequel.
Phillips co-wrote the script with The Hangover Part II co-writer Craig Mazin and will return to the director’s chair a final time. The Hangover Part III is slated to open on May 24th, 2013. Hit the jump to read the full press release.

This morning, we have the most interesting of all news stories: release dates and title changes! How else will you know when things are coming out or what they’ll be called? These are fundamental changes and you should appreciate them. First up, Deadline reports that Walter Hill‘s action flick Bullet to the Head, starring Sylvester Stallone, has been kicked off the release calendar. The film was set to open on April 13th against The Cabin in the Woods and The Three Stooges, but now it’s floating in limbo. Bullet to the Head follows a New Orleans hitman who teams up with a Gotham cop to hunt down those responsible for the deaths of their respective partners.

We’re only a few short days away from the 84th Academy Awards, which means all that prognosticating and “fake controversy” business will finally come to an end on Monday morning. Until next year, that is. Nevertheless, a number of presenters have been announced over the past few weeks and we figured we’d bring you a full list of all the pretty celebrities scheduled to appear during Sunday night’s telecast. Zach Galifianakis, Will Ferrell, Tina Fey, Emma Stone, The Muppets and the leading ladies from Bridesmaids will (hopefully) be bringing the funny, and today the Academy announced that last year’s winners in the acting categories will return to present. I really, really liked the way the awards were given out a few years back with past winners speaking directly to each of the nominees, so I’m hoping Christian Bale, Melissa Leo, Natalie Portman, and Colin Firth will be doing something similar.
Hit the jump to read the full list of presenters and performers, and be sure to check back this weekend to see how yours truly and Matt Goldberg think the awards will stack up in our predictions feature. Billy Crystal hosts the 84th Academy Awards on Sunday, February 26th.

We’ve got quite a few set photos to share with you today, involving everything from Zach Galifianakis as a Southern politician in Chinese robes to Olivia Wilde in a luchador outfit. Briefly:

It appears The Hangover 3 is inevitable. Shortly after the release of the disappointing The Hangover Part II, director Todd Phillips promised a second sequel that would complete the trilogy. Now, after a long negotiation period, the film’s stars Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, and Zach Galifianakis are close to landing a major pay raise to reprise their roles. The trio are apparently asking for $15 million each (against backend), which is a steep increase from the $5 million each (plus backend) for The Hangover Part II, and under $1 million they received for the first film in the comedy franchise. Hit the jump for more, including how soon The Hangover 3 may hit theaters.

This trailer is pretty much exactly the same as the red band one that was release a few weeks ago, except with no dirty words. If you’re not a fan of the duo’s peculiar brand of comedy, odds are this trailer won’t win you over. The movie features cameos from a number of celebs including Zach Galifianakis, Will Ferrell, John C. Reilly, Will Forte, and Jeff Goldblum.
