First Look at Rachel Nichols and Zoe Bell in Female Fighting Flick RAZE

by Dave Trumbore    Posted: November 22nd, 2011 at 3:02 pm

If your idea of a good movie is Rachel Nichols (Conan the Barbarian) and Zoe Bell (Whip It) fighting each other to the death in nothing but wife-beaters and sweatpants, just go ahead and hit the jump right now. If you need a little more prodding, how about the fact that their new project, Raze, has been touted as a cross between Hostel and Fight Club? In the film by director Josh C. Waller (The Nail), Jamie (Nichols) and Sabrina (Bell) are pitted against each other in a vicious fight for survival in what appears to be a tournament-style death-match. The tagline of the movie reads, “Fight or Die” and that pretty much explains it all. Hit the jump to check out some images from the picture.

GRINDHOUSE Blu-ray Review

by Andre Dellamorte    Posted: October 8th, 2010 at 6:50 pm

There are two things to note about this recent release of Grindhouse. The first is that when the film premiered in the spring of 2007, much was hoped for this three hour double feature from Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez. Rodriguez’s half Planet Terror had a stripper (Rose MacGowan) and her off-again boyfriend (Freddy Rodriguez) battling a zombie plague brought on by a scientist (Naveen Andrews) and a crazy solider (Bruce Willis). Death Proof is the second half and has Kurt Russell playing a killer whose weapon of choice is a stunt car, and whose prey are young women (including Rosario Dawson, Zoe Bell, Tracy Thoms, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Vanessa Ferlito, Sydney Poitier, Jordan Ladd and Rose McGowan). But Tarantino’s and Rodriguez’s fan-base and the world at large either didn’t get or didn’t care about the movie, and so it flopped at the box office. It was meant to be a fun flagship production by the Weinstein company, and instead was a big black eye. As such the films were broken off and sold separately on home video. So finally, three and a half years later, the film comes as originally intended to DVD and Blu-ray. And my review of this three hour opus is after the jump.

WHIP IT Blu-ray Review

Whip It movie image - slice (1).jpg

Roller Derby is a sport primed for cinematic treatment. A fast paced game of passion and pageantry played by colorful and attractive women, chock full of good-natured violence and brimming with personality. It is a rowdy, populist sport, reborn screaming from the heart of Texas in a deluge of Lone Star beer and fishnets where the leagues are owned by the players and the players are doing it for the love. From inspirational to exploitational, there are a thousand potential Roller Derby movies just waiting to be made. Whip It, despite its potential, is not a great Roller Derby movie. However, in focusing on what it isn’t (a great Roller Derby movie), one runs the risk of missing what it is (an empowering and potentially great movie for teen girls).  More after the jump:

In the sport of Roller Derby, sometimes you need to “throw a hit”, which is exactly what it sounds like.  In her directorial debut, Drew Barrymore fails to throw a hit but “Whip It” scrapes out a victory on the strength of its characters, its script, and its lovely and talented lead, Ellen Page.
