To this point, all of the marketing for After Earth have highlighted Will and Jaden Smith, which is understandable. They’re the lead actors, and Will Smith is a movie star. But there are other actors in the movie, and we now have the first images of co-stars Sophie Okonedo (Hotel Rwanda) and Zoe Kravitz (X-Men: First Class). The film centers Kitai Raige (Jaden Smith) and his father Cypher (Will Smith), who crash land on a post-apocalyptic Earth, and it’s up to Kitai to fight for survival when Cypher is seriously injured. Okonedo plays Cypher’s wife, and Kravitz plays their eldest daughter. I don’t know the size of their roles, but I appreciate the film for having a primarily black cast since that never happens when it comes to blockbuster action films.

The cast is filling out for director Neil Burger’s (Limitless) adaptation of author Veronica Roth’s popular YA novel Divergent. The Descendants star Shailene Woodley is set as a 16-year-old girl living in a world where society is divided into five factions that represent a particular virtue. There’s Honesty, Selflessness, Bravery, Peacefulness, and Intelligence. On a certain day, all 16-year-olds must choose which virtue they want to devote the rest of their life to, after which they undergo a rigorous initiation process for said virtue.
Summit/Lionsgate is planning Divergent as the first in a potential trilogy of films based on the book series (ie: hoping for another Hunger Games-sized hit), and now three more roles have been filled by Maggie Q (Nikita), Zoe Kravitz (X-Men: First Class) and Ansel Elgort (Carrie). Hit the jump to find out who they play.

Columbia has released the first trailer for M. Night Shyamalan‘s After Earth. As you can see from the trailer, the plot centers on a father (Will Smith) and son (Jaden Smith) who crash land on a post-apocalyptic Earth, and it’s to the son to fight for survival when the father is seriously injured. If there was another director at the helm, I would give this film the benefit of the doubt, even though Jaden Smith fighting digital animals for two hours seems less-than-exciting. Even though Stephen Gaghan (Traffic) and Gary Whitta (The Book of Eli) had a hand in the screenplay, I simply can’t get my hopes up due to Shyamalan’s involvment.
The film also stars Zoe Kravitz, Sophie Okonedo, and Isabelle Fuhrman. After Earth opens June 7, 2013.

Filming on the fourth Mad Max film, Mad Max: Fury Road, has been underway for a couple months now, but Kennedy Miller Mitchell Productions have now released an announcement that principal photography has begun. These production start announcements usually don’t mean much except they usually contain the first synopsis for the movie, and this press release is no different. We’ll also give the release a pass since Mad Max: Fury Road looked like it might never happen since it was constantly delayed, and the production hit a serious snag when their original location was hit with flooding and turned into an oasis, which doesn’t really lend itself to a post-apocalyptic wasteland. Shooting is now taking place in Africa.
Hit the jump for the press release, which contains the synopsis along with the names of all the major roles (and there are some great character names). Mad Max: Fury Road stars Tom Hardy as the new Mad Max, and also stars Charlize Theron, Nicholas Hoult, Zoe Kravitz, Riley Keough, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Hugh Keays-Byrne, and Nathan Jones.

Once cast as the Amazon warrior princess Wonder Woman in what was to be George Miller’s failed Justice League film, Megan Gale will finally get to team up with the director in Mad Max: Fury Road. Her role is unspecified at the moment, but we do have character names for a host of other roles, including that of Hugh Keays-Byrne, who was tapped to star as the Martian Manhunter alongside Gale. Mad Max: Fury Road features Tom Hardy in the title role along with Charlize Theron as Furiosa. Hit the jump for more casting info.

We’ve got some early set photos from George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road to share with you today. From on location in Africa, they feature model/star Abbey Lee Kershaw and some suped-up vehicles that continue the signature look of the Mad Max franchise. It’s hard to believe that it’s been 27 years since the last Mad Max movie came out, Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome starring Mel Gibson. The fourth installment features new additions Tom Hardy, Charlize Theron, Nicholas Hoult, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Zoe Kravitz. Hit the jump to check out the first set photos from Mad Max: Fury Road.
[Update: A few more set photos have surfaced, including one of Huntington-Whiteley, Kravtiz, and a few other cast members. They're included after the jump.]

How’s this for a career track? At the age of 12, Isabelle Fuhrman got the attention of critics for her portrayal of a deranged woman with hypopituitarism in Orphan, and more recently landed a spot in Gary Ross’s upcoming The Hunger Games as Clove, a knife-wielding “contestant” that is sure to share screen time with Jennifer Lawrence. Now, it’s being reported that Fuhrman is in talks to star opposite Jaden Smith in M. Night Shyamalan’s After Earth, which also stars none other than Will Smith himself. The sci-fi epic, previously titled 1000 A.E., is set in a future where humans can no longer survive on the inhospitable Earth. While the elder Smith is playing the part of a warrior, his son has inherited the role of “failure.” But that all gets turned around when a crash landing forces the son to save the father. Fuhrman is expected to play Rayna, a friend of Jaden Smith’s character. Hit the jump for more on Fuhrman, The Hunger Games and After Earth.

Earlier this year, we reported that Will Smith and his son, Jaden Smith would be co-starring in director M. Night Shyamalan’s new sci-fi project, 1000 A. E. Now, Zoe Kravitz (X-Men: First Class) and Sophie Okonedo (Hotel Rwanda) are in early talks to join the picture as well. Depending on whether or not the deals are worked out, Kravitz would play Smith’s daughter and Okonedo would play his wife (take that, Willow and Jada).
The plot of 1000 A. E. is “set 1,000 years into the future, where a young boy navigates an abandoned and sometimes scary Earth to save himself and his estranged father after their ship crashes.” The script was co-written by Gary Whitta (The Book of Eli), Stephen Gaghan (Traffic) and, you guessed it, Shyamalan himself. 1000 A.E. is schedule to hit theaters on June 7th, 2013. Beware the Gonzo is definitely not your typical high school movie, thankfully so. It tells the story of Eddie “Gonzo” Gilman (Ezra Miller), a rebel journalist who is ousted from his prep school’s newspaper and decides to become the voice of the oppressed by starting an underground paper, with the help of fellow outsider Evie Wallace (Zoë Kravitz). Initially, they set out to give a voice to all of the misfits who are victimized by the in-crowd. But, the more Gonzo uncovers about the injustices in his school, the more he learns that the truth comes with consequences and it can hurt the same individuals he believes he is helping, including the ones he cares about most.
During an exclusive phone interview with Collider, co-stars Ezra Miller and Zoë Kravitz talked about how exciting it was to take on roles that were not typical high school teenagers, that they believe everyone feels like an outcast in life, how their friendship on screen developed into a real-life friendship off screen, and how when you search too deeply for the truth, it can often hurt as much as it helps, and that they both have the desire to remain honest in the roles and projects that they do. Miller also talked about having recently finished filming The Perks of Being a Wallflower, and Kravitz said she hopes that Mad Max (for which she has signed on to do a role) will get the go-ahead for production soon. Check out what they had to say after the jump:

With director Matthew Vaughn’s X-Men: First Class opening this weekend, I recently attended a press conference in New York City with January Jones, Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Kevin Bacon, Zoë Kravitz, Lucas Till and Rose Byrne. While some press conferences are filled with awful questions and boring answers, the cast was in great spirits and I found the almost thirty minute conversation quite interesting. They talked about why they wanted to be in the film, how they prepared to play their characters, what it was like to go back to the 60′s, the costumes, what they first thought when they found out they’d been cast, their reaction to seeing the finished film for the first time, what have the fans been telling them, and so much more. You can either read the transcript or listen to the audio after the jump.

A new featurette and a slew of images from X-Men: First Class have been released over the past week. Early reviews for the film have been wildly positive. Steve saw it earlier this week and thought it was great, “a home-run.” Director Matthew Vaughn has been thinking about a follow-up film, and even has an idea of how he would open the sequel. Directed by Vaughn, the film stars Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Rose Byrne, January Jones, Oliver Platt, Kevin Bacon, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Lucas Till and Caleb Landry Jones. X-Men: First Class opens on June 3rd. Hit the jump to check out the featurette followed by the images.

The first image of the cast of X-Men: First Class has been released. Because of the horrible photo-shopping job, my first instinct was that the image was faked. But the image comes from MSN [who have now taken down the page] so I’ll assume it’s legit. The film is set in the 1960s (although you couldn’t tell it from these costumes) when apparently light bulbs were in short supply.
From left to right, you can see Michael Fassbender as Magneto, Rose Byrne as Dr. Moira MacTaggert, January Jones as Emma Frost, Jason Flemyng as Azazel, Nicholas Hoult as Beast, Lucas Till as Havoc, Zoe Kravitz as Angel Salvadore, Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique, and James McAvoy as Professor X. Cast members not pictured include Kevin Bacon, Oliver Platt, Edi Gathegi, and Zoe Kravitz. Hit the jump for a synopsis of the film. X-Men: First Class is due out June 3rd. [Update: Higher-resolution images of the cast photo have gone online. Hit the jump to check them out] [2nd Update: The first images from the film have gone online. We've added them after the jump. One of the images provides the first look at Kevin Bacon as villain Sebastian Shaw] [3rd Update: Two more new images from the film have been added showing Magneto and Professor X in action]

The X-Men: First Class casting news just keeps pouring in. Earlier today we reported that Morgan Lily will play a young Mystique in the film. Deadline has news of a few more additions, of which the Emmy-nominated January Jones (Mad Men) has the highest profile; she will play the telepathic mutant Emma Frost. Alice Eve was at one point in negotiations for the role, though apparently a deal was never finalized.
Meanwhile, Zoe Kravitz (Mad Max: Fury Road) has signed on to play Angel. [Update: Fox has clarified on Twitter that the character's real name is "Angel Salvadore". Her mutant powers are similar to that of a housefly--flight, fast reproduction, acidic vomit]. Bill Milner (Son of Ramobw) has signed on to play a young Magneto. (You may recall the role of “old” Magneto belongs to Michael Fassbender.) Hit the jump for the full cast list and official synopsis.

Riley Keough (The Runaways) is apparently close to landing a role in director George Miller’s fourth Mad Max installment, Mad Max: Fury Road. If cast, the young actress would join Tom Hardy (Inception), Charlize Theron, and Nicholas Hoult (Clash of the Titans) in the film. According to Heat Vision, Keough would play “one of the ‘Five Wives,’ a group of women that Hardy must protect from the bad guys.” Sounds pretty self-explanatory if you ask me…
In case you’re lacking your daily Riley Keough “fun fact,” here’s one for you: she is the daughter of Lisa Marie Presley and musician/actor Danny Keough. If my math is correct, that makes her the granddaughter of “The King” Elvis Presley. For more info on the film and to see what other rock and roll ties exist within the cast, hit the jump.

Heat Vision Blog reports that Nicholas Hoult is set to join Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron in George Miller’s Fury Road, the fourth film in the Mad Max series. For those that don’t recognize the name, he was the chubby picked-on kid in About a Boy who made you say “Holy shit!” when you realized he was the hot gay student in A Single Man. Would that every fat, dorky-looking kid grow up to be an Adonis, but sadly, that is not the way of the world.
Now that I’m done with my man-crush, let’s get back to Fury Road. Not much is known about the film. It’s set a short while after the events of Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome but it’s Tom Hardy replacing Mel Gibson in the role of ‘Mad’ Max Rockatansky. Beyond that, the plot and characters are tightly under wraps. All we know about Hoult’s character is that he’s named “Nux”.
Also joining the cast are Zoe Kravitz (The Brave One) as “Five Wives”, and Teresa Palmer (Bedtime Stories) and Adelaide Clemens as part of a convoy being chased by baddies. Filming is set to begin this summer in Australia.
