Even when his films don’t completely work for me, I still think Gore Verbinski is an underrated and fascinating director. I think his madcap and slightly insane direction is why the first three Pirates of the Caribbean movies work, and even when they go off the rails, they go off the rails in a really interesting way like a woman becoming a giant and then turning into a bunch of crabs. It’s trippy, bizarre, and I’m glad he’s out there doing his thing.

Next year, we’ll get the first film from Verbinski since his 2013 flop The Lone Ranger with the horror flick A Cure for Wellness. A viral promo has been released from the film, and while it doesn’t appear to include any footage, it does bring an eerie feeling about a product that can cure what essentially amounts to the human condition insofar as our desire to better our station in life.

When we reported on the film last year, we learned that it tells the story of an employee (Dane DeHaan) who is sent to rescue his boss from a European “wellness spa.” As horror films go, he soon realizes he’s trapped and discovers that the facility has a far more sinister purpose than it lets on. Mia Goth (Nymphomaniac) will play a longtime patient oblivious to the spa’s plans for her.

The last time Verbinski directed a horror film was 2002’s The Ring, and I’m excited to see what he’s bring to the genre with this A Cure for Wellness. Check out the viral ad below. The film is currently slated to open on February 17, 2017.
