The first trailer for director David Cronenberg’s A Dangerous Method has been released, and it’s fantastic. Based on Christopher Hampton’s 2002 play The Talking Cure, the film centers on the relationship between Carl Jung (played by Michael Fassbender), his mentor Sigmund Freud (Viggo Mortensen), and Sabina Spielrein (Keira Knightley), the woman who came between them. The trailer is intense, showcasing what are sure to be some powerhouse performances, as well as a score by Howard Shore. Oh, and there’s sex. Lots of sex. This is Cronenberg after all. Sony Pictures Classics is set to release the film, hopefully sometime this year. Hit the jump to watch the trailer for yourself.

Here’s the trailer:

Here’s the official synopsis:

Seduced by the challenge of an impossible case, the driven Dr. Jung (Michael Fassbender) takes the unbalanced yet beautiful Sabina Spielrein (Keira Knightley) as his patient in A DANGEROUS METHOD. Jung’s weapon is the method of his master, the renowned Sigmund Freud. Both men fall under Sabina’s spell.

My thoughts exactly. I’m a psych major as well. Of course, one doesn’t need to be a psych major to know how sex-oriented Freud was.

This is not fantastic. The actors seem ordinary and Keira lacks that qulaity of madness about her — she seems merely comical. I love Cronenberg but this trailer does not impress

it has michael fassbender in it, i know its gonna be amazing

I feel like this movie is another example of Cronenberg putting his various fantasies on film. He gets a script about famously horny historical figures, casts gorgeous and talented actors, puts them in beautiful clothes and sets, and has everybody fuck in weird ways. If it works, it works. If there’s another director who’s libido I’d want to see translated directly to the screen, I don’t know who it is.

    Is that weird?

wtf? I wasn’t expecting a bloody romance, I can tell you that.

I’m suspect about some of the accents here, especially Knightly. Viggo showed he could do Russian in ‘Promises” so I’m confident he’ll be fine.

    This looks absolutely fantastic…
I can’t wait to see what Mortenson, Fassbender & Knightley’s dynamic bring to the table..

Both Mortensen and Fassbender are terrific actors (and they look so similar, they could be brothers) so no worries here. But Miss Knightley has always seemed to me a stiff actress, lacking expression and any form of passion. She is so….sterile in everything she displays on screen. Bad choice and if this movie will suffer it will be because of her.

I’ve never understood how Keira Knightley gets acting jobs. She’s totally stiff and wooden in her acting. Her accents are lousy, too. I also don’t understand why David Cronenberg gets heralded as such a great director either. Most people who see movies have probably never even heard of the guy, he’s never won an Oscar, and his movies don’t make much money at the box office.

this trailer looks fantastic in both the performances and the story. for those of us uninformed in the history and facts behind this tale, the trailer in itself is exciting. As a Knightley fan, I can’t wait to see her in something so different.

It looks… i don´t know…so dramatic! Feels more like parody of a period movie to me, and believe me i loved the last two Cronenberg films, i don´t buy it.

You are so right about this looking like a spoof a period movie. It’s so over the top it’s laughable. I think Cronenberg’s choices lately for films and actors have not been on point. Cosmopolis wasn’t a good book so I have no idea why he wanted to make a movie where the source material sucked so badly. It got worse when he cast the vampire kid in the lead role. That was a sell out on David’s part because that Patinson kid can’t act for beans. I guess he just wanted a popular at the moment choice to bring attention to the project instead of selecting a quality actor.
