Universal Pictures has released the first red-band trailer for Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane’s latest directorial feature A Million Ways to Die in the West.  It’s also MacFarlane’s live-action acting debut, and judging from this first look, he’s actually a bit more reserved than his animated counterparts.  The dangers of the wild west more than make up for MacFarlane’s toned-down performance as it looks like the film will live up to its title; just about anything and everything in this world can and will kill you in the most hilarious way possible.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer.  The film also stars Charlize Theron, Liam Neeson, Neil Patrick Harris, Amanda SeyfriedSarah Silverman, and Giovanni RibisiA Million Ways to Die in the West opens May 30th. [Update: We've also added some new images from the film to the article as well.]

one positive thing from this trailer is that it looks like at some point NPH is going to lead a musical number, so that’s a plus…….

    Winner winner, chicken dinner!

Well, this trailer did not land with me. Looks painfully bad.

So much green screen…looks like they shot it in my basement.

    • sense11

Really? i only counted 3 , 4 shots, the rest are shots of people outside being lit by the sun, inside or nighttime

maybe your definition of green screen differs from mine

      • Bart

If you are counting actual shots there are easily 8, maybe even more apart from the very liberal use of terrible CGI . And the way its shot is even worse – reminds me of 48ps debacle of the Hobbit. If you’re shooting a western atleast make an effort to showcase it in a bit more realistic manner. For a studio movie the production value looks shit.

      • sense11

he says awesome in the trailer, i dont think they are going for realistic , any who you are just trolling anyway so Good Day

Ted made more than half a billion dollar for universal,(highly unusual for a comedy to be as successful internationally as domestically ) so it’s understandable that they want to stay in the Seth marcfarlane business. When a company wants to keep on the good side of an actor or director, the company might want to take the actor or director’s vanity project.
Vanity projects don’t necessarily makes money (after earth, magnolia, pain & gain) because the studio is not interested in those projects therefore don’t market them well. The studios want to get those projects out of the way as quick as they can so the actor or the director goes back to making the studio money
A million ways to die in the west is Seth marcfarlane’s vanity project, and universal wants Seth marcfarlane to go back and make ted 2 . So the questions are: is Seth marcfarlane a bankable property,? More importantly, will his style of comedy and pop culture reference suit a western ? People especially Foreign audiences don’t like western (lone ranger, remake of true grit being the exception) but will they like a western comedy? More importantly do people know what Seth marcfarlane look like???? Sure they know his comedy but maybe not his baby face
I predict this movie will fail at the box office because it won’t be marketed well and universal just wants to get the movie out of theaters quick so Seth marcfarlane can concentrate on ted 2 ( so he doesn’t have to do press in foreign markets )

Studios will never dump millions in a project just to throw it in theaters with no marketing. They always set out for the film to make a profit. For u to say that they just want to get this thing out with no regard to it’s quality so he can make ted 2 is ridiculously stupid!!! PS, this looks absolutely hilarious!

Shit for brains comedy. The funniest this guy gets is maybe a laugh on the inside, but that’s it.

  • mattinacan

i thought it was a mistake for MacFarlane to be cast as the lead for this. Voice acting is not the same as actual acting. Looks like i was correct.

First thing I thought was oh it’s Seth MacFarlane, the voice from Family Guy and Ted. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to buy him as an actor on screen because his voice is just too noticeable, it takes you away from the movie…the opposite of what it should be doing. Some parts look funny but it looks way too polished and in your face visually, a western no matter if it’s a comedy should have a certain aesthetic to it. Just please don’t be d**k and fart jokes, try do something new. On the up side it has NPH and Liam Neeson, if Neeson has comedic moments it’ll be awesome he was hilarious in Life’s Too Short.

    • Jamesy

Oh and the great Giovanni Ribisi also, doing his creepy dance from Ted it looks like.

Typical MacFarlane humor, which I don’t find funny anymore because it gets too predictable once you know his formula, was hoping he’d try something new with this.
One thing is for sure, the dumb masses will watch the s**t out of this, just like they did with Ted.

  • Dan

The CGI blood looks terrible, Seth MacFarlane has a shit sense of humor, and the sets look cheap. The only person with a worse sense of humor is MAYBE Michael Bay.

  • George Otwori

Seth MacFarlane doesn’t seem to have consistent screen presence. The trailer had funny moments but id be surprised if it became a classic like Blazing Saddles.

  • milo

This still looks like it’s about a thousand times better than Lone Ranger.

    • Redjester

      This.

  • Redjester

I have to admit, I laughed more than a few times watching this trailer, which is more than I can say about most full length comedies.

Good or bad though, this movie is guaranteed to make a sizable chunk of cash due to all of the target audiences the films premise covers.

wow. that looks… bizarre is the only word i can think of to describe it. everything looks hilarious but seth mcfarlane acting and reading his own dialogue is so much worse than i could have ever imagined. and im really not even a fan of his. if he had just cast someone else with actual good comedic timing this might actually be something that looks worth my time, but i was LITERALLY cringing within seconds of him appearing on screen. please tell me im not the only person who had that exact same reaction?

    • NICK НΛRT

just rewatched the trailer simply because it was so bizarre and all i could think was he seems to be doing an impression of dennis from its always sunny

  • Jimbo

    I’m there. Should be hilarious.

  • Jason Richards

Damn Seth has zero screen presence. The way he delivers his lines are also horrible. Why would a guy whose never acted before suddenly, without any acting classes, choose to cast himself in the lead?

  • Redjester

This trailer would have been much better if they had simply omitted that last scene after the title reappeared. Killed the momentum/flow of the traielr.

I’m guessing MacFarlane will get old and Theron will steal the show without trying.
