I will say this for Lemony Snicket’s book series, A Series of Unfortunate Events: they are horrible, and horrible in not the way you expect. They’re page turners where you want to see the Baudelaire orphans get out of trouble and escape the treacherous Count Olaf, but you also want to learn the mystery behind their orphans’ parents and their relationship to author Lemony Snicket. I won’t spoil why the ending is so painfully awful, but to be fair, Snicket warns you throughout that you’ll be unhappy, and “unfortunate events” is right there in the title.

But perhaps the upcoming Netflix show will be more satisfying. Neil Patrick Harris stars as Count Olaf, and now a leaked set photo has found its way online showing what he looks like as the dastardly villain [via CS]:

He looks good! I like the premise of the stories, and I also like the 2004 movie starring Jim Carrey. A Series of Unfortunate Events is a fun world, but the ending could stand to be tweaked just a bit. I’ll be interested to see what executive producer and director Barry Sonnenfeld does with his adaptation for Netflix, which is slated to run for 13 episodes.
