Adam Shankman, who directed the movie musical version of John Waters’ “Hairspray,” is returning to the genre with “Rock of Ages,” a rock-themed 80s love story set to the tunes of Journey, Twisted Sister, Joan Jett, Bon Jovi, and Pat Benatar, among others.  More on the project after the jump.

Shankman told Variety he considers “Rock of Ages” “‘Mamma Mia!’ for dudes.”  Apparently “every guy in the audience knew the words to the songs.”  Duh, of course they did!  It’s 80s rock music!  New Line intends to start production next summer and Warner Bros. will release the flick in 2011.

I had the distinct pleasure of seeing “Hairspray” when it came out, and though it was a far cry from the best movie musical I’ve seen, Shankman is certainly more than competent with the style.  What concerns me is, according to his IMDb profile, he has over 17 project in development, like “Hairspray 2,” not including this one.  Yikes!  Clearly the man likes to keep busy.  The question is, with such early deadlines, “Rock of Ages” included, what project(s) will take back burner?  Hopefully, for his “dude” demographic, it won’t be this one.

I LOVE Hairspray and look forward to the release of ROA, the Movie but only if they cast it properly!!! I love Cruise as an ACTOR but not a singer – I have seen the Toronto and US ROA shows and it ROCKS – it would be an insult to those very talented performers to trade ‘name brand’ for talent — STACEE JAXX is too pivotal a role to hand over to Cruise – MiG Ayesa, the guy playing it now on the US Tour has it all – the acting, the comedy AND the singing chops!!! Have Cruise but put him elsewhere in the show. I can’t watch Mama Mia because Brosnan – a great actor – just cannot sing!

Having seen the tour of Rock of Ages in several different cities, I am happy to hear that there will be a movie made from the stage musical, and Shankman will do it proud! However I am hoping that this movie won’t follow in the footsteps of Mama Mia a(nd other movies) by casting on the main talent of ‘box office draw’ rather than the actual talent needed for the part. For instance, I have read where Tom Cruise was wanting to play Stacee Jaxx…no, just no. There is no way he could ever do the part better than the tour’s MiG Ayesa. As for articles mentioning Mary J. Blige taking the part of Justice, she is a great singer and could pull it off, as could Queen Latifah, who IMHO, would add a bit more “attitude” into the part. But please, go for the true talent, we don’t need to keep watching the already popular actors make an adequate musical while more talented people, who could make a phenomenal movie, get ignored.
