A sequel to director Steven Spielberg’s The Adventures of Tintin is still on track, according to Peter JacksonThe initial plan was to have Jackson film the performance-capture portion of the Tintin sequel this past summer after he finished production on The Hobbit, but the decision to expand the J.R.R. Tolkein adaptation to a trilogy on top of prepping for the release of An Unexpected Journey understandably took up quite a bit of Jackson’s time.  Though he still plans on tackling 8 weeks or so of additional filming on The Hobbit early next year, it appears that he also hopes to get around to shooting the Tintin sequel in 2013 as well.  Hit the jump for more.

peter-jackson-the-adventures-of-tintin-2-sequelDuring the press tour for An Unexpected Journey in Belgium (via Bleeding Cool), Jackson told reporters that the plan is to shoot the performance capture for the Tintin sequel at some point next year for a 2015 release date. Spielberg previously revealed that Jackson will only need 31 or 21 days to complete the performance capture portion of the film, so it’s conceivable that he could move right into that after he finally wraps on The Hobbit.

Of course Jackson will also have to juggle post-production on the second Hobbit installment, The Desolation of Smaug, before that film’s December 2013 release.  However, in the latest production blog Jackson was seen already working on the edit of Smaug, and during his recent appearance on The Colbert Report he revealed that he already has a cut of Smaug completed.  That leads me to believe that he doesn’t have a large amount of post-production left on The Desolation of Smaug besides finalizing visual effects, so all signs point to Jackson actually making that 2015 release date for the Tintin sequel.

If all goes according to plan, we’ll have a Peter Jackson-directed film hitting theaters every year for four years in a row.  Not too shabby.

  1. I was wondering if this was still going to happen, and I’m glad it is. If for no other reason that to have a series of films directed by both Spielberg and Jackson. The first one was fun, but, ultimately, forgettable.

  2. Jackson’s Tintin should be a lot better than Spielberg’s. Unicorn was fairly good, but it did have problems and I wanted it to be better than it was….I am just an enormous Tintin fan so it was satisfying just to see the characters brought to life. I was surprised it wasn’t better considering Edgar Wright and Joe Cornish were writers on it, but who knows what Spielberg did to mess with it. Jackson will probably not rush the story so much, because we know he likes to make long drawn out movies.

  3. As a long-time fan of the original Tintin comics, a fan of Peter Jackson, and a fan of Spielberg and Jackson’s first ‘Tintin’ movie, this is incredibly exciting news. :)
