New Image of Jaden Smith in M. Night Shyamalan’s AFTER EARTH

Last week, we showed you some photos from the set of M. Night Shyamalan‘s sci-fi film, After Earth.  The movie stars Jaden Smith as a young boy navigating “an abandoned and sometimes scary Earth to save himself and his estranged father (played by Will Smith) after their ship crashes.”  Smith the Younger has now posted a picture of himself in full costume, and while I’m not crazy about the costume design, it does reinforce the notion that Jaden will probably be as big a movie star as his father.  He’s got the look and The Karate Kid showed he had the talent.  Unfortunately, After Earth is an M. Night Shyamalan movie so none of that really matters.  His movies could suck the warmth out of sunshine.

Hit the jump to check out the image.  The film also stars Zoe Kravitz, Sophie Okonedo, and Isabelle FuhrmanAfter Earth opens June 7th, 2013.

    Matt Goldberg,

I visit this site about twice on daily basis and that is because of the coverage that you guys do. Even though most of the reportings are from different sources. Meaning that it does not come to collider directly. But, I still visit the site. And, Mr. Goldberg, every time you post something regarding Shyamalan, you have to say something negative about his films. And it is getting really old, Matt. I think you should stop it. Carry on with your reporting and make it sound as professional as possible, for what matters, Matt is professionalism at this day and age. I know that you have the freeom to express your opinion and just like you are reporting and insulting every time you post something about Shyamalan or his work, I have the freedom to express my opinion based on your remarks as well.

I am telling you guys, I like collider.com and I appreciate the amount of effort you guys put on this site, and why would you post something nonsensical. You have not even seen this film, yet you are saying that it would suck. Now, I know Shyamalan made few mistakes and we are all human, we all make mistakes. That doesn’t mean that every time you post something about the man, you have to say that it would suck or it doesn’t matter if it is a Shyamalan film.

    Thank you, Matt.

Well I respect your thought’s on Goldberg being professional some of Shyamalan’s biggest fans have turned into his biggest critics. What happened to the man who made the Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, & Signs. Its hard to believe that the same man made The Last Airbender, The Happening, & Lady in the Water. It’s like he got kidnapped after making the first half of the village and replaced by someone with far less talent. But to be fair while slamming M. Night I can’t understand the heaping of praise he gives to Jaden Smith. He was great in the Kung Fu Kid? Did we watch the same movie? To me he has the acting range of a cardboard box. Maybe Goldbergs a closet a Scientologist.

    M. Night bashing (original), and a blatant crush on Jaden Smith… Great article.

  • Gui

We don’t want your opinion on films or directors, DICKFACE!! Just tell us the news and keep your nasty views to yourself!

    • tweek

      Why? He´s right!

    • shepardN7

I think Gui is actually M. Night Shyamalan

    • fravit

Every other writer on this site puts their views in their articles too. If this exact article has been written by anyone else, no one would be complaining.

  • Matt R

Fuck you. “It’s an M. Night Shyamalan movie so it doesn’t matter”. Way to be a cliche sheep like all the other “journalists” (pfhhhh…) who are all on this “let’s be soulless fucks and hate this man for no real tangible reason” kick. People like you disgust me. Pathetic. So “Airbender” wasn’t a great movie. So what? Did it ruin your life or something? Find something worthwhile to hate if you must regurgitate your self-loathing for the world to hear.

  • ALEX

@ GUI: totally agree! No one cares about your opinion Goldberg. You’re a no name. If I want an opinion I check out Ebert’s site cuz he actly knows what he’s talking about. What the fuck have you made? Shyamalan made 4 amazing films and clearly peaked early. He’ll redeem himself with this, i mean Gaghan and Whitta wrote it. So just reports the news you douche.

    • Phoenix

I would like you to read the following review by Mr. Ebert about Shyamalan’s last film:

      http://rogerebert.suntimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20100630/REVIEWS/100639999

While I don’t hate Shyamalan, I can understand the negative criticism against him because frankly they are valid. All those who defend him only choose to acknowledge his earlier works, which no one disputes as being anything but good if not great. But the backlash against him is because of his recent films, mainly Lady in the Water, The Happening and The Last Airbender.

The continued faith in the man in the hopes that he’ll finally redeem himself is undeserving as he has shown an inability to learn from his mistakes. Shyamalan is a terrible writer but a good director (his long single take shots are always incredible), but the fact remains that he insists on writing his own films. Even thought Stephen Gaghan and Gary Whitta are credited as the screenwriters for After Earth, Shyamalan as the director still has final say; and knowing his previous behavior it is very likely that he will contribute to some script changes if not the entire script rewrite.

Just like I don’t know whether or not his involvement with the script is true, you don’t know that just because other writers wrote the script that the film as a whole will be good. At this point its all speculation from both of us, but given his history I can not share in your faith that After Earth will finally redeem Shyamalan. After all, everyone thought that creating a film based on a existing property with well defined characters and plot would be Shyamalan’s comeback film but then we got The Last Airbender.

      • ALEX

I agree with you. It is a bit underserving and yeah I acknowledged that he has f-ed up too many times for people to believe in him again but I do. Call me a fool. I mean the dude made Unbreakable, Signs, Sixth Sense, and the Village…Thats vintage Shyamalan and basically a guy like that who had the talent at one time or another to make those great films will always have a great possibility in making a come back.

  • Mikey

    What a twist!

I never understand the anti-opinion comments on here. Relax.

  • Rohan22

The funny thing is that I typed a comment to state that what Mr. Matt Goldberg is doing is nonsensical, and most importantly unprofessional when it comes to reporting news, but that comment of mine never showed up.

I visit collider.com on daily basis and I enjoy most of the reports even though most of those reports are from different sources. Meaning that they are not directly coming from Collider.com

I request Mr. Goldberg to keep his personal opinion to himself and report what needs to be report and report what readers wants to read. It is getting old, Matt and to rest of the collider.com reporters that every time the site reports regarding Shyamalan, they have to say something negative. They sound like Shyamalan took their money and made the films.

The reason I am posting this, for I am tired of reading this kind of reporting. If you are not a fan of Shyamalan, do not report anything on him. But you still do so you can get viewers and make your site’s front page look updated. Since you are still reporting news regarding Shyamalan be professional.

Just be professional when reporting anything about anyone. Period. That will make your site more better.

welcome to the new media you idiots.

Websites like this exist entirely for opinion pieces which is why they have a spot for you to voice your opinion, dip shits…

Stop being such morons this is not non bias journalism.

“Unfortunately, After Earth is an M. Night Shyamalan movie so none of that really matters”

    Sixth Sense
    Unbreakable
    Signs
    Lady In The Water

    go to sleep Goldberg

  • Joel Cunningham

Matt Goldberg has sex with his pets

  • Tim

He looks like his father when he was on The Fresh Prince of Bel Air.

  • sense 11

    Matt is right, sorry people.

M Night lost his groove long ago and Smith & Son are not going to get it back for him.

  • Convoy

Matt can be an ass when it comes to his reviews, but he’s right. Yeah, Shyamalan‘s first four movies were good, but he totally dropped the ball on the last three were horrible. I don’t see how any of you can honestly sit here and defend him when the the last movie he made, he was given the source material on a platter and it was still crap. I’m willing to give this new movie a chance because the man is a good director. Until reviews for it start coming out though, based on the track record of his last three movies, it is safe to think that they’ll end up being turds like his last three films and that he’ll be 4 for 4.

  • Vince Gulbert

I still go to watch M. Night Shyamalan movies (there are still a couple of us out there)

  • Aurora Vampiris

Is it really so hard to ignore Matt and concentrate on the news? It’s a common trend in most movie blogs. There’s always this one reporter who’s grumpy and pessimistic. Chud has Renn Brown. Collider has Matt Goldberg. Big deal.

And Jaden Smith looks incredibly like Will Smith to me here for some strange reason.

  • Guns Of Navarone

Unfortunately, After Earth is an M. Night Shyamalan movie so none of that really matters. His movies could suck the warmth out of sunshine.

lmao… I’ve got to say; that did make me laugh. He has a point. M.Night Shyamalan hasn’t put out anything decent in a long time and now this with not one Smith ego but 2, I smell shit.

  • RAR

Can’t stand that Smith kid. His presence pretty much guarantees I won’t be seeing this.

  • Kimian

Jaden looks identical to his Father…..Will watch this !!!!

  • Strong Enough

whoa so now everyone is a M.Night fan cause Matt wrote the article? but when Adam writes one all the haters come out bashing Night?

GTFOH you guys are such losers man. i have never seen such a bunch of whining commenters before

  • Kanwar

Is no one bothered by the depressing grey feel to this? The sad yet determined faces, the lack of any joy or humour? In a futuristic, superhero-ish movie, for god sake!

I don’t like Matt’s views myself. But this seems like ‘The Last Airbender’ territory again

    • Aurora Vampiris

That’s exactly why Shyamalan’s called a one-note director. He caters to a particular style of films. Expecting a Shyamalan film to be light and cheery is kinda stupid, even if it’s got a superhero feel (remember Unbreakable?).

This seems more like “I Am Legend” territory too. :D

      • gbom

so what’s wrong with having a style? since when was that a bad thing? since when did every film maker have to different stuff? What about Tarkovsky? He wasn’t exactly the most cheeriest guy either. Or how about Michael Hanneke? Hell, Tarantino can only do revenge movies. And they are all the same.
