Columbia has released the first trailer for M. Night Shyamalan‘s After Earth.  As you can see from the trailer, the plot centers on a father (Will Smith) and son (Jaden Smith) who crash land on a post-apocalyptic Earth, and it’s to the son to fight for survival when the father is seriously injured.  If there was another director at the helm, I would give this film the benefit of the doubt, even though Jaden Smith fighting digital animals for two hours seems less-than-exciting.  Even though Stephen Gaghan (Traffic) and Gary Whitta (The Book of Eli) had a hand in the screenplay, I simply can’t get my hopes up due to Shyamalan’s involvment.

The film also stars Zoe Kravitz, Sophie Okonedo, and Isabelle Fuhrman.  After Earth opens June 7, 2013.

Official synopsis:

A crash landing leaves teenager Kitai Raige (Jaden Smith) and his legendary father Cypher (Will Smith) stranded on Earth, 1,000 years after cataclysmic events forced humanity’s escape. With Cypher critically injured, Kitai must embark on a perilous journey to signal for help, facing uncharted terrain, evolved animal species that now rule the planet, and an unstoppable alien creature that escaped during the crash. Father and son must learn to work together and trust one another if they want any chance of returning home.

Goddamn, Will Smith looks badass in this. With Night, I always have the ‘Proceed with Caution’ button on, but if anyone can carry a movie, it’s Smith.

MEH. The premise of this sounded so good. But it looks sorta dumb. CG seems spotty. Def not as promising as the Tom Cruise sci-fi flick.

    • Griz

I seriously kept thinking oblivion trailer while watching this . . . . and i kept thinking Equilibrium while i was watching the Oblivion trailer. God, i hope the eventual Elysium trailer doesn’t look like either of these.

      • Melack

Oblivion looks miles better than this. Especially visually.

      • Reaper

Don’t worry about Elysium, from the footage that I saw at Comic-Con it gave me the impression that its going to be just as gritty and violent as we have come to expect from Blomkamp.

  • J

What makes you think we want your thoughts on the trailer Goldberg?

    • Jose

      thank you. lol

    • Alan

Goldberg is a God. He is all, and you shall bow down before him. Hail the God, Goldberg, hail …

  • Bob

Was really hoping he’d say “welcome to Earth” at the end. Oh well…

    • Clay

I think you mean “Welcome to Earf.”

Why doesn’t it work for me? Two trailers in one week…?

So…..what’s up with Will Smith’s voice?

      M. Night’s words are coming out of his mouth.

      • depp

        wrong.
check the facts and try again, hater.

      • Steve

Go on apologizing for the guy who gave the world The Happening. How’s that workin’ for ya?

  • TheHOYT

10,000 AD? Seriously, just supplant ancient humans for future humans and you’ve got 10,000 BC all over again.

  • GunzOfNavarone

Too much cgi, too little story. It looks like a fantasy version of I Am Legend.

  • Kai

The movie doesn’t come out ’til June of next year so to harp on the ‘shoddy’ S/FX is ridiculous. They’re obviously not finished with them.

  • Rosencreantz

“Do you know where we are? This is Earth.”
    What a Twist!

Wait! Is not that the Statue of Liberty half buried on a beach?

      LOL

“Do you know where we are?”
      “no sir”

        LOL!

It’s sad to see how Mr. Shyamalan has gone from being considered the new Spielberg early in his career to become the steward of the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and his repellent son. This seems a blatant and talentless Avatar rip-off. M. Night Shyamalan should start sending CVs to Starbucks. His Hollywood career is over.

    • Donovan McLean

What on earth would cause you to draw a comparison to Avatar?

  • tarek

Looks like a sequel of avatar… Avatar 2 the last airbender fender

from the director of The Last Airbender & Lady in the Water comes a Will Smith movie

  • Bill

When it comes to making a film he’s like a 88 year old Korean woman on her way to the pharmacy, he can only go 25mph, any faster and he crashes the car.

  • david

you people are delusional. M nights first 4 films weren’t that bad. Lady in the water was quite strange but not terrible. The Happening wasn’t his greatest but I liked the story ok. we all know how airbender was…..i dunno. I feel that there are ALOT of other directors currently making shittier film after shittier film that don’t get as much flack as m night. fuck the haters. let’s hope this is a return to his earlier brilliance.

    • Steve

Are there other directors making worse pictures? Sure. But few directors started out with as much promise as M. Night only to crash and burn so spectacularly due to an inability to accept criticism and grow as an artist. M. Night deserves every bit of hate he now receives because he is the epitome of wasted talent.

Listen to the dialogue in The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, and Signs and tell me that the same man wrote Lady in the Water, The Happening, and The Last Airbender. Most people would think you were crazy, yet there it is. The proof is on the celluloid.

      • charles

And go watch Alien and Blade Runner and tell me if that feels like the same guy who made Legend, Black Rain, 1942, White Squall, Someone to Watch Over Me.

And go watch Halloween and the Thing tell me if that feels like the same John Carpenter as the one’s making the other films.

Go watch The Godfather and Apocalypse Now and tell me if that feels like the same director who made Jack.

We can do this all day. I wonder if you do the to those other filmmakers.

    • Bill

The Last Airbender: The film received a 6% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and five Razzies in 2011, including Worst Picture.

He may have written a number a decent films, however the guy is a bad director. If Jaden does manage to deliver a noteworthy performance, i will never believe that it was because of M. Night.

  • None

Robinson Crusoe On Mars was more thrilling than the pablum this trailer represents. Pitch Black created a better world. Pretty looking film, though. Let’s hope that is all the dialogue in the movie. Earth may have evolved, but man certainly hasn\’t. And did the kid say, “No Suh.”?

  • Nope

Notice it’s not being marketed as “A film by M. Night Shyamalan”? Hmm… that’s a first.

i didnt hate it, i agree with everyone that Oblivion has a better trailer, and i know Elysium is going to be better but im not gonna just write this off. My concern is how much Will Smith is actually in the movie because i cant stand the son.

  • Rick

So he’s putting the twist of the movie right into the title/trailer now? Or is it a fake double-twist??

Also, why did Will Smith’s voice change into Terrence Howard in the middle of that?

Seems remotely entertaining, though I’m sure M.Night will fuck it up.

    • charles

I don’t think you guys even know what a twist is. Idiots.

    • charles

I don\’t think you guys even know what a twist is. Idiots.

      • Steve

A twist is an overused plot device that M. Night uses like a crutch because he’s such a poor storyteller. Any other questions?

      • charles

So I guess in your book Nolan and Fincher are poor filmmakers since they have just as many films with twist endings as Night does.

Clearly you haven’t watched any of Night’s films.

      • Steve

Fincher and Nolan are known for making compelling dramas that sometimes have plot twists. Their entire stories don’t hinge on them like many of Night’s films. Thus, the crutch.

  • wes

Will Smith can be a great actor but his wasting away his career with these horrible film decisions..

    • James

And how many dollars have you contributed to the box office?

      • Steve

With that logic, you aren’t allowed to say your meal sucked unless you can cook it.

      • Anon

Yeah James, MONEY is all that counts in the movie business, not QUALITY or anything.

    • charles

You’ve seen this movie have you?

  • Person

Smart move not to mention Shyamalan in the trailer. People ignorant of his involvement will go see this for Will Smith, the movie will make money, and Shyamalan will keep getting work cuz technically “his” movie turned a profit.

    • mr perfect

Exactly – I liked Smith in I am Legend with the REAL ending that appeared on the dvd.

  • Rockslide

I’m going to assume that the twist is that its not earth in the far future, but rather earth in the far past. Like BSG. Maybe Will Smith will turn out to be a Cylon as the second twist. Then for the third, his son will wake up and its all a dream only he’s not a human but a Navi in the future with a robot arm that can see the past.

As for Will Smith, I unfortunately lost my faith in him quite some time ago. He seems to have gotten a complex where he has to be so flippin’ serious in every film that it ruins the reason why people liked him in the first place. A lot of his movies have interesting first halves but then destroy everything in the second. “Will Smith as William ‘Oscar’ Smith in a Will Smith movie.” Like he went to the Tom Cruise school of acting. I prefer the fun Will Smith.

    • sense 11

you might be right about the plot

    • charles

You’re wrong. People who’ve watched the film said that it doesn’t have a twist ending. In fact, Shyamalan hasn’t had a film with a twist ending since the Village. Nolan has as many films that have twist endings yet people don’t go on about it. You people seriously need to get over this twist thing cause it’s getting old and you come off looking like fools.

      • Steve

Yet someone who defends a director who hasn’t scored a critical hit in 10 years is enlightened? Now THAT’S a twist.

  • Reijanrobo

I actually saw the first Test Screening of this film a couple moths ago and it is actually a solid Sci Fi Film. It truly was nothing like any other M. Night film which was for the best. he stayed pretty true to the genre and the future human race aspect to it was so original. Give it a chance when it come out, the performances were solid and I thought it was pretty great!

Big twist, Will Smith is really…white!! I think Will Smith’s character will turn out to be an alien of some sort, the way he was talking seemed very controlled? But actually looked better than I was expecting, the cgi looked mehh could have been a lot better but hopefully it will improve before it’s release.

I for one find the premise of this flick intriguing….and I actually thought the cgi was pretty cool.
Though I wish there will be more sci-fi than just the animals. Where did they come from, where are they going! And those gadgets Will Smith is using….
I have hopes for this flick already.

  • Solgazer

Two negatives for me – both the same thing. Jaden Smith doing stupid heroic poses. Pathetic and jarring.
Other than that though – looks epic. I’m on board. I’ll always give Shyamalan another chance. Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, Signs. I reckon they were all incredible. I think his ego raged out of control for a bit because he was JUST THAT GOOD but everyone told him so and he lost the plot for a bit. After a few knockbacks it would be great to see him get his head back in the game again.

  • João Paulo (@JPaulo645)

Looks great, shu up all of you hahaha, but serious guys, this trailer is awesome.

  • Apu

Big twist: Kitai Raige is actually Keyser Söze!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    LMFAO

  • James

    M. Night is still one of the most talented directors in hollywood. Unfortunately he happens to be the worst writer in hollywood. All of his films are directed extremely well it’s just he sucks at story and dialogue.

    • Jen

THIS! People seem to get M. Night’s writing and directing mixed up. Great director. Terrible script writer. And then when he does them both, it makes it seem like he is a terrible director/script writer. He should just stick to directing it and let EVERYONE ELSE DO EVERYTHING ELSE.

  • Conrad the Great!

Decent V.O. with Will Smith work in the trailer, which is well edited. It gives us a glimpse of the type of action and creatures they’ll be facing. Although I’m not sure if I’m sold on this concept. They land back on planet Earth after a millennium of a previous catastrophe which occurred, and they’re trying to survive, but……. where are they supposed to go afterwards? Can the ship be fixed? Is there rescue coming to get them? Are they adapting to this new world to live? Not sure if this is like a Cast Away type deal or what…..

Either way, I couldn’t care less. Looks like a wash…

  • Curbcooler

This looks awesome! t looks like “Avatar” and “Prometheus” mixed together. I. Not fan of “Nights” last several films at all but you are using your personal bias of “M Night.” As a excuse to trash this movie. But this film really could be M. nights movie comeback after all these years. t has now just become popular to shit on M. Night Becuase as “Goldberg” himself admitted Ihave a feeling if this were by a different director the comments on this page would be very different.

I know this Becuase I to iced that a LOT of people who have been trashing “The Last irbender” never actually saw that movie and were just going along with the flow to be cool trashing Night. And as terrible as “Airbender was I do have to give credit where it was do and say this looks like a Intwnse badass Action Movie! The movie has a very distinctive visuals I don’t know why so many keep commenting that there bad visuals because they actually are not.

    • Steve

Ok, here is one of the reasons I hate M. Night and it has nothing to do with jumping on some kind of bandwagon. I have trashed his last several films because I have SEEN each one. I was one of the biggest fans of his work in the early years. Truly a huge fan. I thought he was the next big thing. I still think his early films are kind of brilliant. But then The Village happened. Ok that one was a mess, but maybe he would make up for it with Lady in the Water. Mmmmm, not so good. In fact, he compounded the criticisms about his ego by featuring a character of a writer who would “change the world” and he chose to play that guy. Oh, and there is a movie critic who plays clueless fodder. It was embarrassing. But it had some interesting fantasy elements so maybe he would pull out a hit with his next one. The Happening was one of the most excruciating experiences I have ever had sitting in a theater. Everyone in the group I saw it with had the same reaction. And every one of us were fans of all or some of his early films. We felt he had insulted his audience, because he had. It was just dumbfounding. So I chose not to see Airbender in the theater when it came out. I refused to give him any more of my money. But I caught Airbender at my brother’s house when it was playing on cable. Again, I was completely blown away by just how far he missed the mark with that script. Where was the heartfelt performances from Signs and unbreakable? When did Night turn into George Lucas (who at least admits he can’t write and certainly doesn’t know how to direct actors)? Was someone else directing those early films? And then when you throw in the ego and the hubris and the sensitivity to criticism, M. Night just comes across as someone who crashed and burned because of his own personal demons. So how many terrible movies are we supposed to endure before it’s “okay” to bash M. Night for legitimate reasons? 3? 4? 5? If you love his movies, great. But the backlash against him is not some misguided trend. It’s well earned.

      • Bill

Wow…. Thank you very much for taking the time and making the effort to write all that, because those are my sentiments exactly.

        Thank you.

      • Bill

        Sorry one last thing.

(This is my opinion, and is pure speculation)

I believe Tak Fujimoto (If you don’t know him, look him up) most likely deserved a great deal if not most of credit when it came to M. Night’s past success. M. Night most likely listened to his advice and relied on his judgement in the past, however when it came to “the Happening” , I’m willing to bet M. Nights ego “knew best”.

        You the man Fujimoto!

      • charles

Bull crap. If you were a real fan and you liked all his early movies then you clearly had no problem with those twists endings.

And no, I’ve hated everyone of Night’s films after Signs as well. But I’m not going to do what you do cause it’s ridiculous. It’s like you’ve taken it personally or something. He’s made bad films. He probably will continue to make bad films. Who knows? Who would ever have predicted that Ridley Scott would’ve made such a comeback after 19 years.

      • Steve

Thanks Bill. That’s as good an explanation as I’ve ever heard for the shift in quality of the early films. Clearly something went horribly wrong.

  • Jen

THIS! People seem to get M. Night\’s writing and directing mixed up. Great director. Terrible script writer. And then when he does them both, it makes it seem like he is a terrible director/script writer. He should just stick to directing it and let EVERYONE ELSE DO EVERYTHING ELSE.

That kid’s going to grow-up with esteem issues as an actor if his daddy keeps getting him parts. Visually this looks good, if a little ‘in studio’. However, if it’s just an indulgent love fest between Smith and his kid during various scrapes with local wildlife, without an intriguing ongoing storyline, it will be boring. Plus, there is the hidden threat of the slow death that is M. Night Shamalamalama-ding dong.

  • DREDD

I’m in! looks great. This and Oblivion I hope will be next years DREDD. (referring to fun surprise action flick, noy box office take)

I like this movie so far from the trailer. I need to see new ideas instead of the same old remakes. I am very intrested in will smith’s wotk. This is an intresting guy a lot of great ideas floating around in his head. He seems to have a unique perspective of life on this plannet and how to make the most of you position in it. That is quite an intresting perspective for an african american in america today. Many people with the negative comments need to be objective and step beyond your own misunderstanding of the world we all share and observe with out comment. Not an easy thing to do but well worth it.

Signs =awesome , the happening = awesome , sixth sense = awesome , lady in the water = awesome , this movie = pretty damn awesome trailer if you ask me and will smith is one of the best actors at the moment anyway
