Sundance Selects has released the first trailer for directors Martha Shane and Lana Wilson’s controversial documentary After Tiller.  In the wake of Dr. George Tiller’s murder, the film chronicles the lives of the only four doctors still currently performing third-trimester abortions.  Obviously this is incredibly touchy subject matter, but the film looks to approach the issue from a fairly objective standpoint, delving into the lives and choices of not only the aforementioned doctors, but also the people that are seeking out late-term abortions.  It seems like a fascinating and emotional watch, and I’m interested to see what insights are gleaned from the film as a whole.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer.  After Tiller is now playing in select theaters.

Here’s the official synopsis for After Tiller:

AFTER TILLER intimately explores the highly controversial subject of third-trimester abortions in the wake of the 2009 assassination of practitioner Dr. George Tiller. The procedure is now performed by only four doctors in the United States, all former colleagues of Dr. Tiller, who risk their lives every day in the name of their unwavering commitment toward their patients. Directors Martha Shane and Lana Wilson have created a moving and unique exploration of one of the most incendiary topics of our time, and they’ve done so in an informative, thought-provoking, and compassionate way.

    I pray for their souls.

      HHAHAAHAHAHA

    • astralislux

      Obviously that will go wasted.

      • Kevin

Quite possibly. Its hard for people to change.

      • Murdoch

You’re telling me. We’ve been losing americans to mass shootings for years, and yet nobody wants to do a god damn thing about it. Too bad all those shooters weren’t killing unborn children. . . Oh, wait. Maj Nadal Hassan AND James Holmes BOTH killed an unborn fetus with their guns.
But since that wasn’t a doctor who terminated the pregnancy with the mom’s expressed consent, we can’t really spring into action, now can we? Hypocrites.

      • Kevin

What does this have to do with shootings? You comment is completely unrelated to any other comment here.

      • Murdoch

The topic of unnecessary, state sanctioned death. If you don’t understand, then i can’t explain it to you.

      • Kevin

        states like shootings?

    • Northern Star

Don’t bother Kevin, these baby killers have no soul… they deserve the same treatment they mete out to the poor infants in their operating theaters!

“Third trimester abortions”… is that the term for cold-blooded infanticide nowadays?

      • Murdoch

No actually, infanticide implies that you killed an “infant”, or a baby that has been delivered. While its in the womb, it is referred to as a “fetus”. You can’t kill a fetus unless God or the mother agrees to it, so the idea of even blaming the docs is no different than blaming the gun for a mass shooting, instead of the shooter. And you know how unreasonable it is to restrict access to guns in order to prevent shootings, right?

      • Kevin

Would the fetus become a baby without being destroyed by the doctor?

      • Murdoch

OK, now you’re posting Non sequiturs. Its the threat that the fetus in question will become a full grown baby that CAUSED the mom to seek an abortion to begin with. Talk to her about whether the baby that she is carrying against her will deserves to be brought to term, not the doctor. You want Doctors to make moral decisions for their patients? Let’s start with amputating the hands of smokers so they don’t give themselves cancer when they’re older, see how well THAT goes over.

      • Kevin

        my post is common sense

Based on the trailer, “fairly objective” means it portrays the four late term abortion doctors as victims heroically performing a needed service, and all people getting later term abortions as victims making an unthinkable choice. I mean seriously, the trailer portrays these doctors as heroes who risk their lives daily, and everyone that opposes them as hate-filled extremists.

Obviously this is a documentary with an agenda. It handled the material in a sensitive manner, but this trailer didn’t do anything to indicate they’re exploring the other side of the issue.

I read a couple of the reviews of people who have already seen the film. They affirm that the movie is not trying to give an objective perspective. They’re trying to demonstrate they doctors and patients aren’t monsters. Or as one person put it, “After Tiller is an hour and a half of folks on their best behavior, presented as a candid portrait.”

    • Murdoch

People who are willing to go to med school and perform a service that their patients desperately need under threat of death ARE heroes, and those that use the message of peace & love to kill them to gain entrance into paradise (last time i checked) are called terrorists. If you were hoping that this movie would take a critical look at abortion, you have your choice from dozens of films released by conservative filmmakers over the years, like the most recent “The Life Zone” (2011)

      • http://thenonessentials.blogspot.com/ Sean Chandler

I don’t think I took a stance on what the film should be. I pointed out this article indicated they think it’s “fairly objective.” It’s not. It can be whatever it wants to be, but if it’s not objective, don’t say it is.

      • Murdoch

Oh, well in that case: Objectively speaking, People who are willing to go to med school and perform a service that their patients desperately need under threat of death ARE heroes, and those that use the message of peace & love to kill them to gain entrance into paradise are called terrorists.

      • Kevin

No one here is advocating death threats. And messages of peace and love do not apply to terrorism.

      • Murdoch

It is when you kill in the name of religion. I doubt the people protesting outside abortion clinics or making plans to bomb or kill the people that work inside consider themselves agnostics or atheists.

      • Kevin

no one here supports those people

  • astralislux

Sort of like having to be objective about the serial killer Gacy. It’s a sensitive matter to fans of serial killers.

    • Murdoch

Only if gacy’s victims drove thousands of miles looking for him, agreed to undergo tests to make sure they were a viable candidate, then let Gacy rape and then murder them, and when it was all done, thanked him afterwards for giving them their life back.

      Yeah, its exactly the same.

I believe in live and let live…am sure those babies would agree.

    • Murdoch

Until those fetuses are born, grow up in a flucked up home, and end up on death-row by the time they’re 25. But yeah, i bet the second they’re BORN they have nothing but the utmost respect for human life.
Its amazing how unborn fetuses and gun owners are both beyond reproach in tea-baggers’ eyes . . . until they actually kill someone, then all of a sudden the govt didn’t enforce its laws strongly enough.
Those of us who don’t believe in fairy tales about pre-historic carpenters coming back to life know that the best way to prevent societal ills is not to wait until something bad happens and then punish them in public for all to see, but to simply avoid the problem from being created in the 1st place.
We push condoms and sex ed as hard as we can, and if for whatever reason a woman who DOESN’T have access to adequate contraceptives or doctors ends up getting pregnant against her wishes, we give her the option of terminating said pregnancy and waiting until she is financially and mentally prepared to become a mother. I realize that’s waaaayy too much freedom for tea baggers to understand. I mean, its a woman’s right to her own body, not a man’s right to his gun.

      • Cog

Hey..kill all the babies you want. Am wishing your mom had got one right about now. But scream, call names and hate as much as you want. Am a live and let live type a guy. Usually.
