Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is coming up on its third season, and ABC has unveiled a gallery of promo photos from the new episodes highlighting the cast back in costume. While the series took a while to find its footing in the post-Avengers glow, the show has built a passionate fanbase over the course of its first two seasons and even spawned a potential spinoff revolving around Adrianne Palicki’s Bobbi Morse (also known as “Mockingbird”). While that show—titled Marvel’s Most Wanted—is only in the pilot stage, ABC's interest in a further iteration of S.H.I.E.L.D. (not to mention a second season of the admittedly underwhelming Agent Carter) signals confidence in the series’ stature.
For Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s third season, the story will continue to delve into the introduction of the Inhumans as well as track the journey of the traitorous Grant Ward. These new images don’t exactly reveal much by way of plot since they’re simply just promo photos, but for fans who can’t wait for the new season of S.H.I.E.L.D. to begin, they offer a tantalizing preview of the whole gang back in costume and ready to fight some baddies—though they don't necessarily seem too happy about it.
I am curious, though, since Captain America: The Winter Soldier shook up S.H.I.E.L.D.'s entire premise, will this April's Captain America: Civil War have a similar effect on the show's DNA? We don't know too much about how the latter film will deal with the governmental aspect of superheroes, but it will address the notion in a way that pits Avengers versus Avengers. Will the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. get caught in the crossfire? We'll find out next spring, but for now let's focus on the front half of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s new season.
