Cinephiles’ theater of choice may finally be heading to the Los Angeles area.  The Alamo Drafthouse Cinema—which was founded in 1997 in Austin, Texas—has gained notoriety over the years for its strict enforcement of audience etiquette as well as its pristine presentation of the films it screens, and now Downtown News reports that the Drafthouse is finally heading to L.A.  Apparently the theater will be built next to the Medallion apartments at Fourth and Main, where the 30,000 square-foot single story building will house eight screens.

News of a Drafthouse coming to L.A. has yet to be confirmed, but the report claims that the theater is set to open in approximately a year and a half.  The chain now has multiple theaters open in Texas, Kansas City, and Virginia, with theaters under construction in San Francisco, Colorado, New York City, Michigan, and Ashburn, Virginia.

I live in Austin, and Drafthouse theaters are my wife and I’s theaters of choice. They are not notorious for “pristine presentation of the films.” They’re famous for honoring the movie experience, waiter service at your seat, serving beer, a weird Austin indie vibe, and insane movie events (where movie stars either show up in person or record introductions).

For their debut of the Expendables 2, they did a 4 movie Van Damme marathon. Between filmes they had guys walk out in karate outfits and lead absurd challenges like a HEART EATING CONTEST. Van Damme recorded a personalized introduction to the film (and they had personalized intros for all the other films too). And at the end of the night they gave us dog tags.

Easily the most over hyped theatre I’ve ever been to.

If you had bad expectations when visiting the theater, that isn’t the theaters fault. Their theaters provide a unique experience which may not be for everyone. Regardless they provide a unique movie going experience and it’s good to know that experience will be available in more locations.
