Alan Cumming, George Lopez, Katy Perry, and Jonathan Winters Smurfs movie.jpg

Sony's big screen adaptation of the classic 1980s cartoon The Smurfs continues smurfing forward at a smurftacular pace.  A month ago we brought you a look at the first CG rendering of one of the little blue critters.  Just a couple days ago came news that Neil Patrick Harris had joined the project as the primary live-action character.  And now we've got some info on the group that will provide the voices of the Smurfs themselves.  Per Variety, Alan Cumming and George Lopez, are set to climb aboard as Gutsy Smurf and Grouchy Smurf respectively.  Singer Katy Perry, meanwhile, is currently in talks to take up the role of Smurfette.   And good news for all you fans of the cartoon: comedian Jonathan Winters, the man who brought to life several characters on the original Hanna-Barbera production, has signed up to reprise his role as Papa Smurf. [Correction: Papa Smurf was originally voiced by Don Messick]

The Smurfs is being helmed by Scooby-Doo director Raja Gosnell.  It's currently set for release on July 29, 2011.  And yes, every update we do on this project from here on out will contain at least one verb or adjective derived from the word "smurf."
