Alex Garland is about to release the follow-up on his feature directorial debut with his adaptation of Jeff VanderMeer's award-winning, far-out novel, Annihilation. Garland set a high bar with the Oscar-winning film Ex Machina but fans should expect a continued exploration of cutting-edge sci-fi concepts and engaging storytelling from the Oscar-nominated writer/director. While his big-screen projects are the talk of the town right now, keep in mind that Garland also has an eight-episode TV series set up at FX that will give him a shot at exploring "technology-based sci-fi" storytelling in this era of Peak TV. And now, we have that series' working title and a few story details.

In speaking with Garland for AnnihilationSteve Weintraub managed to get an update on the FX series. The project is still in pre-production and currently has the greenlight from the network, meaning that Garland will go ahead with business as usual until he hears differently. So while things may change in the months ahead, expect to hear more about his series, currently titled Devsas was revealed in this interview, which you can see above.

Here's Garland with a bit more on the title of Devs and what exactly it's about:

Alex Garland: Yeah, Devs, as in Developers.

Have you revealed a logline? What would you want to tell your fans as to what it's about?

Garland: It's about a particular aspect of technology at the moment which is to do with very, very big data and very powerful processing power, and what can happen when you put those two things together. It's set in San Francisco, a sort of tech story.

On pitching the story and whether or not it could continue past the initial eight episodes:

Garland: If they want to carry it on, I guess they could do, it's a self-contained story though. But there's ways you could carry it on.

On his planned shooting schedule:

Garland: Provided [we still have the greenlight], hopefully shooting in about six months. I've started talking about casting, locations, practical stuff like that.

Keep an eye and ear out for more on Devs as Garland gets closer to production. And for more on Annihilation, be sure to take a look at these recent write-ups before the movie arrives February 23rd:
