Here’s the synopsis for What Maisie Knew:
Set mostly in England, the novel is related from the perspective of Maisie, a preadolescent whose parents were divorced when she was six years old and who spends six months of the year with each parent. The only emotional constant in Maisie’s life is Mrs. Wix, a motherly old governess. Maisie’s parents marry other partners, but neither marriage succeeds. Her new stepparents are attracted to each other, divorce Maisie’s parents, and marry. Maisie knows intuitively that she cannot depend on the adults in her life, and she chooses to live with Mrs. Wix, on whose unconditional love she can depend. [Amazon]

Um, Julianne Moore……what’s up with the typecasting.
She’ll have played exceedingly similar roles in three consecutive movies. “Cheats on spouse which causes family upset and the basis for the film’s plot.” The EXACT SAME CHARACTER in ‘The Kids Are All Right,’ ‘Crazy Stupid Love,’ and now ‘What Maisie Knew.’
In the book Maisie’s mother did not cheat on Maisie’s father the two of them just simply hated each other. After they divorced they both remarried. Not sure how it will be handled in the movie.
In the actual book Maisie’s parents are minor characters and her stepfather (being played by Alex) is one of the major characters. As usual I expect Hollywood will mess it all up. I never watch movies of books I have read because they never get them right. I am only looking forward to this movie because Alex will be in it and I think he is a spectacular actor.
Yey~!! Alex Skarsgard~!!
Hope he get’s a lot of screen time~!!
Fortunately, Hollywood is making it pretty clear that it is a modern adaptation. Unfortunately, they have a poor history of doing classic titles any real justice in their original intent.
Either way, a new website just came up to track latest movie news and will likely expand in content referencing the book also. Check out http://www.whatmaisieknew.com
