NBC is launching the spy drama Undercovers from J.J. Abrams this fall, but we’re not too far removed from the era that the combination of “Abrams” and “spy drama” pertained rather to the producer/director’s action series Alias.  The series aired from 2001-2005 on ABC and helped launch the careers of such notables as Jennifer Garner and Bradley Cooper.  Plus, it established Abrams as a presence in the action/sci-fi genre when prior to the series he had best been known as the creator of teen drama Felicity.

E! Online reports that ABC has recently been batting around the idea of rebooting the series, Current discussions are very preliminary, and the project is not yet in development, though a reboot of the series would reportedly dial down the mythological elements of the original (that means no Rambaldi prophecy, for fans of the series).  More after the jump:

jennifer_garner__1_If true, it kinda sounds like ABC wants to have a doppelganger ready to go in case Undercovers is a hit this fall.  Still an interesting idea, to be sure.  I’ve only seen a handful of episodes so, commenters, is the material worth revisiting?  Is the “No Rambaldi” rule a good thing or a bad thing?

Here’s a first season synopsis via Amazon:

Sydney Bristow is not exactly your average grad student. Her life might appear normal, but she’s hiding a secret life working as a spy for the CIA. Sydney’s world is turned upside down when she learns she may work for the very enemy she thought she was fighting. Now she’s entangled in a covert lifestyle where she is forced to question the allegiances of everyone, including those closest to her.

Definitely a good thing. It made the series look ridiculous.

Yes the series got a bit heavy handed, but there is no 'rebooting' the fantastic cast they had. Garner, Cooper, Ron Rifkin, Victor Garber, and many more. I am SO against this idea. It was the kind of show that can just be 'redone', especially not a mere 9 years after the pilot!

Now an Abrams produced sequel show, featuring original characters, Garner present or absent, I would watch

The Rambaldi stuff was fantastic in the first two seasons, but then because of studio pressure I guess, the show would drop it and pick it up again in a non-commital fashion. Season 4 and 5 seemed to be completely lost from a story standpoint, and the final return to the mythology was handled so poorly it made me almost not care to return to the series. It's a real shame.

I liked the mythology, but if they do anything with Alias deciding from the outset to fully commit to it or, in this case, leave it completely out is a very good idea.

The first two seasons (and other parts here and there) were truly awesome, imo.

Like Ryan, I'd rather see a return to the original characters, not a retread. Or just a very different story/title.

Yeah mate, completely agree about the original characters. Being a retread is just too insulting to the original but might have merits and improve on what the original did not deliver on.

This may fail however because the original is still fresh on everyone's minds. I'd say make a completely different one altogether.

Either that, whoever thought of this idea needs a boot up his or her ass. LOL!

I just wanna see Sloane return from the grave as an immortal and to try and conquer the world. :D Naah, just kidding. Anyway, it would really be nice to see the show's reboot for example in a season 5 way with APO back in business and for example Garner as a superviser of some sort + looking for Sark with Dixon and stuff like that in the beggining just to find that there is a threat and they would've to work together… ooh, got the chills from the thought of it :D

    IT WOULD BE AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!
    ALIAS 4EVER (L)!!!!!!!!
BUT JENNIFER GARNER HAS TO BE THERE !!!

I would like to see a spin-off. Like, with Marshall and Dixon after Sydney and Vaughn “retire” to their beautiful island paradise.
