Last week we reported that J.J. Abrams’ 3D sequel to 2009’s Star Trek had cemented a May 2013 release date, and today word comes that Alice Eve (She’s Out of My League) has joined the cast. Variety reports that Eve has landed an unspecified role in the follow-up that’s believed to be new to the canon. The actress apparently beat out Teresa Palmer (I Am Number Four) and Hayley Atwell (Captain America: The First Avenger) for the role. Abrams returns to the director’s seat with most of the original cast expected to return. Benicio Del Toro has been cast as the villain, though the nature of his role is shrouded in secrecy. Hit the jump for more, including the possibility of a second villain added into the fold. With Eve’s role filled, Variety’s report states that there’s just one more major part left to be cast, and it’s possibly another villain. The character is apparently older than Del Toro’s and would be more of a supporting role. As we previously reported, production begins on January 15th with a script by Damon Lindelof, Roberto Orci, and Alex Kurtzman. Additionally, Michael Giacchino will be returning as composer. Eve played a prominent role on the final season of Entourage this year, and will next be seen in the Edgar Allen Poe thriller The Raven alongside John Cusack. She also stars in Men in Black 3, which hits theaters May 25th, 2012. Star Trek 2 opens in 3D on May 17th, 2013.
