Release dates for a few promising upcoming films have been announced.  Briefly:

  • Disney’s sure-to-be CGI-filled sequel Alice in Wonderland 2 will be released on May 27, 2016.
  • Disney has also set a release date for director Jon Favreau’s new adaptation of The Jungle Book, which joins the box office apocalypse of 2015 on October 9, 2015.
  • The closest release date comes to us by way of director Ron Howard’s real-life drama Heart of the Sea, which has been dated by Warner Bros. for release on March 13, 2015.

Hit the jump for more on the aforementioned properties.

alice-in-wonderland-2-sequel-johnny-deppWith regards to Alice in Wonderland 2, The Muppets helmer James Bobin takes over the director’s chair from Tim Burton and Johnny Depp is set to reprise his role as the Mad Hatter, with THR confirming that Mia Wasikowska is onboard as well.  Plot details and further cast information is non-existent at this point, and with the 2016 release date quite a ways off I wouldn’t expect to hear more about the project until next year.  Currently the only other film scheduled for May 2016 is an untitled Marvel release.

Jon Favreau only recently signed on to helm the live-action The Jungle Book for Disney, but with that October 2015 release date set, production will likely be getting underway next year.  The Iron Man director previously described the redo as his first family film since Elf, and he will be blending action elements and visual effects to make for a rip-roaring adventure for the whole family.  There are currently no other films slated for release in October 2015.

Finally, director Ron Howard’s Heart of the Sea stars Chris Hemsworth and is based on the disaster of the whaleship Essex, which served as the inspiration for Moby Dick.  The impressive ensemble also includes Benjamin Walker, Cillian Murphy, Tom Holland, and Brendan Gleeson, and the film is scheduled to square off directly against Disney’s live-action Cinderella on the March 2015 date.

Considering that Alice in wonderland 2 is now coming out on May 27th 2016 do you think that, that might mean that Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Men Tell No Tales will come out 2 months later in July 2016, since its theatrical release year wasn’t announced to be any later then 2016 ?

    • Adam Chitwood

That seems likely. Pirates is definitely a summer tentpole franchise. Disney has another Marvel film on July 8th, so either that will move or Pirates will take the late July slot. I imagine the former is the most likely scenario, with Marvel moving to August or November.

Oh, I see. So Pirates 5 will probably either be released on July 8th 2016, or on July 22nd 2016 or July 29th 2016 ?

      • Adam Chitwood

Probably somewhere around there. It’s a ways off, though, so there will be shuffling between now and then.

wow, kind of thought that ron howard film heart of the sea will get release aleast late 2014, cause it sounds like an oscar worthy film.

….i’m not sure why you got so many dislikes. Seems like a legit comment to me.
The true story is insane, and bloody horrific. If Ron Howard does it justice (rush quality) it’ll be an intense film

really?i like burton but i haven´t seen this one for the fact that i didn´t meet a single person that liked it, in fact everybody really hated it and told me it was the worst thing burton ever directed, and considering the writer i wasn´t surprised.also money shouldn´t be the reason to make a sequel, having a good idea should be the main reason, but that´s not how studios think.

      • Willy Billy

everybody really hated it? Is that why it made a freaking billion dollar at the box office?

    • The_Smirking_Revenge

Agreed… Another Tim Burton nonsense-fest starring Johnny Depp as a side-character who is now the main star because he’s Johnny Depp. The first was awful, but it made money…That’s all the reason anyone needs for a sequel these days.

It’s really too bad about Burton… I remember when he was still able to come up with original ideas instead of shameful remakes.

Going to files this under “movies that will suck.”

      • gwiz30

I love how you’re proclaiming a movie will automatically suck because Tim Burton and Johnny Depp are involved and it clearly states that Tim Burton won’t be directing it. I file this under “comments that suck.”

      • http://tarek-to-verso.over-blog.com/ tarek

Alas you are right. Where is the Tim Burton we knew in the past…

      • Willy Billy

Yea it was awful and it made a billion dollar and not just “money” , Millions of people liked it and they will all go to see this one so GTFO if you don’t like it.

And what shameful remakes did Burton do? Sweeney Todd and CATCF were better than the originals

      • Willy Billy

Burton is not even directing this movie you idiot. Did you even bother to read the article or you just read the title and jumped on the comments to post this nonesense?

      • Yousef loves Burton’s dong

Someone’s over sensitive about critcism of their favorite movie. Plenty of terrible movies make a lot of money. Transformers 2 anyone? People are allowed to express their opinions without you commenting like a dick to every reply. Without the spectacle of Avatar getting everyone interested in 3D, Alice wouldn’t have made half as much money. It was terrible, especially the end battle. Mark my words this movies going to flop hard.

      • http://tarek-to-verso.over-blog.com/ tarek

        Amen

      • Willy Billy

Wait, was i fking talking to you? the biggest reason Alice made all of that money is the brilliant heavy marketing with Depp’s name and let’s say that this movie won’t make as much but it still won’t flop hard because it is a sequel to a million dollar maker y’know? So many “mainstream” audience loved it and still talks about it and all of these people will go to see this one. If it it didn’t do so well in the US the overseas marketing will save it big time.

      • Yousefs Mom

Why you angry Yousef. The overseas market saved all other great movies too. You like? Clash of the Titans, Wrath of the Titans, The Last Airbender, Pirates of the Caribbean 8, Ice Age 11, 2012, Madagascar 17, and Shrek 7. All amazing movies that overseas box office proved were among greatest of all time. Now go clean room Yousef, you’re grounded. You no swear. Naughty naughty.

      • Willy Billy

Pirates of the Caribbean 8 your butt, They made only 4 movies in 9 years and mind your own business or go fck yourself

      • Guy

Not too bright are you? I think he knows there’s no pirates of the Caribbean 8. Or Ice Age 11, Madagascar 17, or Shrek 7. Hilarious. He’s messing with you and it’s obviously working. Dude you take yourself way too seriously.

      • http://tarek-to-verso.over-blog.com/ tarek

You forgot Transformers 13. Alas another box office hit.
