When a movie grosses over a billion dollars in the worldwide box office, like Disney’s Alice in Wonderland back in 2010, you can pretty much guarantee a sequel is on the way. That seems to be the case for Alice, because screenwriter Linda Woolverton is reportedly penning the sequel. Woolverton wrote the original Tim Burton picture, which starred Mia Wasikowska in the title role and Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter. Her latest effort, Maleficent, is currently in post-production. Variety reports that she also wrote the script for a stage play and musical adaptation of the 2010 Alice in Wonderland, which is to be directed by Rob Ashford. The sequel’s details are obviously being kept under wraps, but keep an eye on this one for future developments. Hit the jump to see the trailer and poster from the original film.

Here’s the synopsis for Alice in Wonderland:

From Walt Disney Pictures and visionary director Tim Burton comes an epic 3D fantasy adventure ALICE IN WONDERLAND, a magical and imaginative twist on some of the most beloved stories of all time.  JOHNNY DEPP stars as the Mad Hatter and MIA WASIKOWSKA as 19-year-old Alice, who returns to the whimsical world she first encountered as a young girl, reuniting with her childhood friends:  the White Rabbit, Tweedledee and Tweedledum, the Dormouse, the Caterpillar, the Cheshire Cat, and of course, the Mad Hatter.  Alice embarks on a fantastical journey to find her true destiny and end the Red Queen’s reign of terror.  The all-star cast also includes ANNE HATHAWAY, HELENA BONHAM CARTER and CRISPIN GLOVER. The screenplay is by Linda Woolverton.

Capturing the wonder of Lewis Carroll’s beloved “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” (1865) and “Through the Looking-Glass” (1871) with stunning, avant-garde visuals and the most charismatic characters in literary history, ALICE IN WONDERLAND comes to the big screen in Disney Digital 3DTM on March 5, 2010.

  1. Interesting. Standard response here: If they have a compelling, fresh story to tell, then by all means go for it! Unlike the much anticipated blockbuster movies like Harry Potter, the Avengers, Batman etc., Alice in Wonderland was an unexpected hit so Tim Burton and Walt Disney Pictures deserve our faith in them to make a good sequel.

    • How can you have faith that they’ll make a good sequel when the first movie was mediocre at best. It was a critical flop, but it unexpectedly made the cash so that equals a sequel. Quality be damned. I think the only reason this movie made as much as it did was because of the infatuation with 3D caused by Avatar.

      • Exactly my point. The first movie, for me, was a load of garbage. Even Tim Burton in an interview basically said that he did this movie because he wanted to break into the 3D business. I don’t see how they can make a proper sequel, since they already manage to make Lewis Carroll turn in his grave.
