Disney has released a handful of new images from the sequel Alice Through the Looking Glass, giving fans a closer look at the long-awaited follow-up to Tim Burton’s 2010 box office behemoth Alice in Wonderland. The Mouse House enlisted The Muppets and Muppets Most Wanted helmer James Bobin to direct the sequel while Burton stepped back into a producorial capacity, but it took some time for Disney to finally pull the trigger on the follow-up after the first movie raked in over $1 billion worldwide.

Penned by Alice in Wonderland scribe Linda Woolverton, Through the Looking Glass picks up a few years after the events of the first film, as Alice has been sailing the high seas and following in her father’s footsteps. However, when she returns to London, a magical looking glass returns her to Underland where she must go back in time to save the Hatter’s life, battling new villain Time himself, played by Sacha Baron Cohen.

These new images show that Bobin has maintained the aesthetic that Burton established in the first film, which was the filmmaker’s first foray into a CG-intensive feature. That movie was a bona fide box office phenomenon, so I’m curious to see if, six years later, audiences are hungry to return to the world of Underland once more.

Check out the new images below. The film stars Mia Wasikowska, Johnny Depp, Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter, Rhys Ifans, and features the voices of Alan Rickman, Stephen Fry, Michael Sheen, and Timothy Spall. Alice Through the Looking Glass opens in 2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D theaters on May 27th.

Here’s the official synopsis for Alice Through the Looking Glass:

Alice Kingsleigh (Wasikowska) has spent the past few years following in her father’s footsteps and sailing the high seas. Upon her return to London, she comes across a magical looking glass and returns to the fantastical realm of Underland and her friends the White Rabbit (Sheen), Absolem (Rickman), the Cheshire Cat (Fry) and the Mad Hatter (Depp), who is not himself. The Hatter has lost his Muchness, so Mirana (Hathaway) sends Alice on a quest to borrow the Chronosphere, a metallic globe inside the chamber of the Grand Clock which powers all time. Returning to the past, she comes across friends – and enemies – at different points in their lives, and embarks on a perilous race to save the Hatter before time runs out. Presented in Digital 3D™, Real D 3D and IMAX® 3D, Disney’s “Alice Through the Looking Glass” opens in U.S. theaters on May 27, 2016.
