It looks like Hollywood won’t be happy until Noomi Rapace becomes the next big thing.  The Swedish actress, best known for her portrayal as Lisbeth Salander in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo , will make her Hollywood debut next year after landing the lead female role in Sherlock Holmes 2.  Now, director Ridley Scott hopes to make the upcoming Alien prequel her follow-up film.  According to Deadline, Scott has picked Rapace as his favorite choice after meetings with such actresses as Carey Mulligan (An Education), Abbie Cornish (Bright Star), Natalie Portman (V for Vendetta), and Olivia Wilde (Tron: Legacy).  Hit the jump to find out why this is a bit of a surprise along with a recap of everything that we know about the Alien prequel so far.

natalie_portman_image__4_This bit of news comes as a bit of surprise since we just reported that Fox wanted Natalie Portman for the lead role after digging Damon Lindelof’s (Lost) recent screenplay draft.  However, in that same report, Rapace was noted as the second choice for the role.  Now, I can’t help but wonder if Portman is the studio’s choice while Rapace is Scott’s choice.  Either way, I’m sure we will find out who gets the role soon.

As we have previously reported,   Lindelof’s screenplay places the project at a PG-13 rating, doesn’t add expensive set pieces, but remains “creatively engaging.”

For everything else we know about the project so far, here is a brief rundown:

  • The prequel won’t involve Ellen Ripley.  It will, however, continue the franchise’s tradition of having a female protagonist.
  • Lindelof’s screenplay places the project at a PG-13 rating, doesn’t add expensive set pieces, but remains “creatively engaging.”
  • The plan is to film two prequels, both of which will be shot in 3D.
  • The action takes place thirty years prior to the events of the first Alien movie.
  • Scott says the film is about “the discussion of terraforming — taking planets and planetoids and balls of earth and trying to terraform, seed them with the possibilities of future life.”
  • The prequels will elaborate on how “The Space Jockey” fits into the world of Alien.

First of all, Natalie Portman is delicious. Mmmmmm. Exhibit A: The above photograph. Moving on then. Well, I hope Damon’s screenplay is all it’s cracked up to be. He certainly is a cool guy, and Ridley Scott’s the man, even if I haven’t been pleased by his recent filmography.

This is David Fincher’s remake of “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo” all over again. The director is pushing for a lesser known talented actress and the studio is just pushing for whoever is popular at the moment.

I havent see any of The Girl with the……………….. movies. So I cant give an opinion on Noomi. Ive only seen pics of her and Im not blown away by her look.

    Mulligan is too little.

I cant blame the studio for wanting Portman. Shes awesome.

I don’t care who’s in it as long as we don’t get another Alien 3

      I’d say “…another Alien 4″. That was a mess.

Hey Alien3 was awesome. David Fincher? Hello! The alien movies with James Cameron’s ubiquitous Space Marines are the great, suspenseful ones. Don’t get me wrong, when I was 10 i loved Aliens just as much as the next kid and Alien3 pissed me off bc all those great characters died. but when i rewatched it recently it really is an awesome movie

Awsomly bad. That ding-bat took all three serviving characters (four if you count the android) and KILLED THEM! Hello! Who the hell does that. Oh yea, David Fincher.

I would like to see Carey Mulligan in a female/heroine role. She was awesome in the Doctor Who episode “Blink” and has been doing mainly dramatic work since. I’d like to see her go back to sci-fi genre stuff.

Natalie Portman is incredibly overrated. Rapace would be interesting… keep the accent- a foreigner in space! But Mulligan seems to be the most interesting choice. Such against type.

Forget this film. Lindelof – the atrocious-monster-hack-retard has already destroyed it even in the pre-production stage.

Carey would just recite old English poetry rather than kicking ass. The chick from the dragon stuff is cool but a bit overrated. Wilde, never heard of her. Potman? Fuck yeah!!! They’ll shave her hair off, she’ll get buff.Mmmmmmmm. OMFG!!!!!!!!
    NATALIE PORTMAN ALL THE WAY!!!!!!!!!!!
