In July, we reported the exciting news that Lost co-creator Damon Lindelof would be re-writing the script for Ridley Scott’s upcoming Alien prequel (or possibly prequels). Vulture is now reporting that Lindelof has turned in his script and that the execs over at 20th Century Fox love it. Part of the reason they like it so much is that it doesn’t add expensive set pieces but remains “creatively engaging”. They’re also happy that that script keeps the project at a PG-13 rating. Finally, this new picture is meant to return the franchise to its roots and is more off a horror-suspense film than an Aliens-style action flick.
However, there’s still going to be a space marine. Hit the jump for more on who Fox wants to play the lead.
Although Ellen Ripley won’t be present, the franchise is still going to have a female protagonist. According to Vulture, Natalie Portman is Fox’s top choice to play the role of a female Colonial Marine general. Portman recently decided not to star in the adaptation of Seth Grahme-Smith’s Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. However, she’s attached to a variety of other projects including Cloud Atlas, Important Artifacts, Best Buds, and possibly The Brothers Grimm: Snow White. The second choice for the role is the previously-reported Noomi Rapace, who starred in the Swedish version of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and will make her English-language debut in Sherlock Holmes 2.
Here’s a brief rundown of what else we know about the prequels:
- The plan is to film two prequels, both of which will be shot in 3D.
- The action takes place thirty years prior to the events of the first Alien movie.
- Scott says the film is about “the discussion of terraforming — taking planets and planetoids and balls of earth and trying to terraform, seed them with the possibilities of future life.”
- The prequels will elaborate on how “The Space Jockey” fits into the world of Alien

Natalie Portman as a general? Hmm, like her but she doesn’t seem tough enough to be general, at least at that age. Still, she’d be great to watch, especially if you have the obligatory scene of coming out of stasis pods in small panties. lol. Oh come on, I said what everybody was thinking
If Portman does do it with her other projects when would Alien start? She up for MoS and with Snow White when could she do it? I would either think Summer 2012 or December 2010.
I would consider casting Missy Peregrym who is the star of ABC’s Rookie Blue. Great looking but believeable in an action role. Very likeable also.

hello
PG13? F*** YOU….
F**KING PG!13???!!!!
Failiure!
Just like Robcop 3, I sense a nail in the Alien coffin is upon us!
(Why cant they at least release an X-rated Directors cut version for us actual fans?)
That way, after I skip on seeing it in theatres, I could at least check it out on bluray without cringing! Infact, they should do that for most movies.
I see a potential AVP 1 and 2 happening all over again. The original Alien had an R rating and scared the crap out of audiences back then. Deciding to go the PG-13 way is only going to justify the execs at Fox as absolute redundant idiots who cant make any choices regarding old school film making.
Look at the reboot for Predators, Rodriguez produced it and it lived up to the hype of the original. Can we forsee Fox doin the same thing with Ridley Scott returning to his prime film and the execs saying, ok, this is what we want you to do. It wont work, and we will end up with another slap in the face film where all fans of the Aliens franchise say screw you. And a $150 million budget will make back maybe half of that.
Let Ridley do the movie to his style and bring back H.R. Gieger for the set designs.
I whole heartedly agree with everything you’ve said. But I fear we’re in for a stinker of a film. As for that Lindelof guy, I could punch his grinning face until it bleeds.
PG-13? If we want to be going back to the horror/suspense, why are we holding back with a PG-13 rating. Do we really want to risk another mediocre prequel/sequel? I love the franchise but the rating seems contradictory to everything else stated in this article.
fail!
PG13??? are you fucking kidding me??? No Sigourney and now a lame ass kiddie’s rating? That’s it!!! For me there are only FOUR Alien films.
I wanted a fifth to give a much deserved closure to Ellen Ripley’s story, and they go and do this crap… count me out… I’ll be enjoying my Alien Anthology box set thank you very much
