Ever since it was announced that Ridley Scott was returning to the Alien franchise with a new prequel, rumors have run rampant regarding the project. Today, it looks like many of the rumors will finally be put to rest, as a large amount of information about the project has surfaced. Ridley Scott will indeed direct the film, titled Prometheus, though it’s no longer a proper prequel to the Alien films. Scott explains:
“While Alien was indeed the jumping off point for this project, out of the creative process evolved a new, grand mythology and universe in which this original story takes place. The keen fan will recognize strands of Alien’s DNA, so to speak, but the ideas tackled in this film are unique, large and provocative. I couldn’t be more pleased to have found the singular tale I’d been searching for, and finally return to this genre that’s so close to my heart.”
Damon Lindelof (Lost, Cowboys and Aliens) wrote the screenplay, and Noomi Rapace is apparently set to star in the lead role of Elizabeth Shaw. We previously told you that Charlize Theron was mulling over the other big lead in the film (Vickers), and now Deadline confirms that Theron is circling that role along with Angelina Jolie. Prometheus is set to be released on March 9, 2012. Hit the jump for more, including what Lindelof has to say.
Damon Lindelof spoke about the joy of having an original story:
“In a world flooded with prequels, sequels and reboots, I was incredibly struck by just how original Ridley’s vision was for this movie. It’s daring, visceral and hopefully, the last thing anyone expects. When I sat in a movie theater as a kid, feet raised off the floor for fear that something might grab my ankles, I never dreamed in my wildest imagination I would one day get to collaborate with the man responsible for it. Working alongside him has been nothing short of a dream come true.”
Given the amount of rumors that have piled up about this project over the past year, it’s nice to finally get some solid confirmation from the filmmakers. Scott had previously talked about there being two prequel films, both in 3D, but it’s currently not known if any of his previous comments about the project still stand given the transformation it has gone through.
Lindelof’s re-write of the script is apparently what got all the parties involved excited about a new direction for the film, and it looks like they were busy developing this new idea while everyone in the blogosphere was still speculating on what little information we had. 20th Century Fox will release Prometheus on March 9, 2012. Expect more casting info sooner rather than later, with filming probably expected to get underway sometime soon in order to make that release date.

Simply question- Does the story have Aliens in it?
Also how do you write a script for an Alien Prequel and then turn it into something else totally original. Im confused.
This is rather promising. While I didn’t mind the prequel bit about the Alien movies, I like this original idea better.
There are just far too many sequels and prequels out there anyway and reboots to boot. With the talent attached, this should be something to look forward to. Bring on more news about the script details.:D
Damon should run along now and rejoin his co-horts and bloody finish the Star Trek sequel.
Good call I agree.
How is STAR TREK 2 not their priortity? It was wildly successful but given Abrams comments they do not seem eager to get the sequel moving forward???
I am confused on this…
ALIENS?? I will check it out but supremely disappointed no one is working on TREK 2
Firstly, I am glad a new Alien film is being made (without Predators)
But, I am gutted it will not be a prequel. I have wanted to see that space-jocky and ship in action since I saw Alien as a kid.
Secondly, I wonder why they didnt just call this prequel/sequel Xenomorph, which is what they actually named the Aliens.
So by that rationing, by calling the film Xenomorph, you would still kinda still be calling it Alien.
Ridley’s comments confirm this isn’t an Alien film anymore. Misleading
misleading title i mean
Based on everything I have read about this film this will be an epic sci-fi film about some space branch (Ridley Scott previously did the truckers or miners of space in Alien. James Cameron did the colonial marines of space in Aliens. Only the space or exploration team hasn’t been done.) that stumble upon a world filled with various strange alien creatures with the Space Jockey at its pinnacle. However it won’t feature the xenomorphs in any big capacity, except maybe to have the xenomorphs’ eggs in a cameo to be described as another creation of the Space Jockeys that went wrong. If you blink you probably won’t even notice the eggs and this will be done on purpose to keep the mystique of the original Alien film for future generations.
Read the quotes. This has nothing to do with the Alien franchise anymore
YES!!!!
I never liked the idea of an Alien film without Sigourney Weaver, and I’m glad they chose to do an original film instead… Now I’m excited!!
Good.
Alien Prequel never made much sense to me, since we saw the first human encounter with the Aliens proper and the new prequel movie seemed like it was going to have humans. :-/
Original scary sci-fi Ridley Scott sounds good. He also sounds energized and excited about it, which is even better. Hopefully he’ll be inspired to outdo himself.
Why are a lot of people happy with this news??? Alien prequel cancelled, and who knows what this “Prometheus” is all about. All the info so far about this is very vague indeed. Why get excited about a movie plot nobody know anything about. Should of stook with the prequel idea me thinks
Great paintings! That is the kind of information that are supposed to be shared around the net. Shame on Google for no longer positioning this put up higher! Come on over and discuss with my site . Thanks =)
Heya i am for the first time here. I came across this board and I in finding It really useful & it helped me out a lot. I hope to provide something again and help others such as you aided me.
I do trust all the ideas you’ve offered in your post. They are really convincing and can definitely work. Nonetheless, the posts are too brief for novices. Could you please prolong them a bit from subsequent time? Thank you for the post.
