A collective “Holy shit” is appropriate for the latest news regarding Ridley Scott’s upcoming Alien prequel. Visual FX designer Henry South recently tweeted the following:

Started work on alien prequel today!! Absolutely stunning. Worth waiting till late 2011 for peeps!

South has worked on the CG models for blockbuster films such as Joe Johnston’s The Wolfman and the upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. Recently he collaborated with Scott on last summer’s Robin Hood, so it’s safe to assume we can trust him as a reliable source. While rumors regarding the planned two-part continuation of the popular sci-fi/horror series have circulated the net for what feels like eons now, this is the first bit of news we’ve had in terms of any actual production on the films. Hit the jump for more.

ridley_scott_sigourney_weaver_alien_01The Alien series has seen its fair share of ups and downs, culminating in 2007’s horrific AVPR: Aliens vs. Predator – Requiem. Scott has long wanted to direct a follow-up to his classic sci-fi shocker, stating his intentions to base a film around the mysterious Space Jockey that figured prominently in the original Alien (which Damon Lindelof’s screenplay is said to be about).

Such an undertaking is ultimately a risky venture, especially considering the now-classic status of both Scott’s film and James Cameron’s equally spectacular follow-up, Aliens. However, since the series has essentially been dragged through the dirt like a stray dog with the likes of Alien: Resurrection and those terrible AVP flicks (Alien 3 gets a break for at least being watchable), why shouldn’t Scott come back to the franchise that more or less made him a household name? If anyone can pull it off, it’d be him.

Scott has confirmed that the prequels will indeed be shot in 3D, and that 20th Century Fox is aiming for a PG-13 rating. No word yet on who will star, though Noomi Rapace (The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo) is currently rumored to be the front runner.

With production now underway, it’s only a matter of time before the big, bad beasties are back on the screen in the way Scott meant for us to see them.

Some don’t like the idea of PG13, but a PG13 nowadays can still go pretty far…it doesn’t necessarily mean a drop in quality, they just might have to trim an extra half-second from this or that. I’m not going to be there for the gore anyways, and language if written well can avoid cursing and such without drawing attention to itself. I worked at an independent theater for a while and saw many a fine PG13 come through there. Still, we’ll see!

Die Hard 4 is a good example

not only Die Hard, but The Dark Knight too. Still it sucks tuning down the violence, language or whatever to fit a rating… another film featuring the Aliens and PG-13 would suck…

Now that I think of, I have no interest on another Alien movie without Sigourney Weaver and a closure to her character’s journey.

I love all four of them equally, but for different reasons, and despite hating the idea of the AVP films, I enjoy them in a sort of guilty pleasure way… also, what’s with the hating of AVP-R? isn’t that what fanboys wanted with the crossover anyway, as opposed to the mithology treatment that Paul W.S. Anderson attempted?

all i want to know is if HR Geiger is designing this movie.

    he needs to.

Where did Scott confirm the PG-13? Can you please link?

PG-13 is a rumor from an unreliable “Fox source”. It’s probably the same people who spread that Alien Harvest script as fact when it’s been floating around for ages.

I’m not worried about the PG-13 rating. I think it’s safe to say it’s comparable to a 1970′s R rating.

I hope it’s not the Alien Harvest script. Although interesting, it seemed to lack a climax.

I hope to God, Ridley has the good sense to bring back Giger. The other alien redesigns over the years have been a let down. Cameron’s aliens looked the worst as far as design (except for the queen). I hated the bumpy, ridged heads and they looked a bit overweight! Ha! They kept getting more and more slimy…..Giger’s original alien never looked wet and I thought it looked the best.

I disagree there man, I think the PG-13 rating today is stricter than the PG rating of 1979. No way Quint’s death in Jaws would get PG-13 today, when you consider they had to cut out a flash of side-bood on Terminator Salvation to get PG-13.

i wonder what kind of tone this film will have..

the great thing about Cameron’s “sequel” was that it changes the tone from the original bringing a fresh take to the horror shocker that is Alien.

i wasn’t a big fan of Alien when i watched it for the first time two years ago(I’m just 19), but it has grown a lot in me over time. and it might be as some people call it one of the few films that is perfect.(Cameron’s Aliens however i was already a big fan of from the moment i saw it)

also, anyone else wondering what kind of film Fincher was going for in Alien 3? i haven’t seen it(but will in a few weeks. i have a the complete Alien Anthology on Bluray). was he going for Alien-type film or Aliens?(NOTE: Alien is one of his favorite films)

James Cameron’s Aliens is the best, the other were craps, Im jz excited ab the space jockey in Alien n the alien in pt 1 really looked like a drone, it’d have been better (but nt good as Aliens) if they made the movie in 1985 or 86, which is the year Jim made Aliens, so the creature look real…

Scott never confirmed PG-13. It also seems Henry South’s twitter page has been removed.

Did you read the tweet below this one? It said filming begins Feb. 2011. My guess is preproduction began yesterday and filming begins in early 2011 for a 2012 release.

Anyways how could a film with a 125M+ budget shooting back to back sequels in mid-November make a 2011 release. It would have to be post-Thanksgiving release. FOX already has Alvin and We bought a Zoo Christmas weekend, only date is pre-Thanksgiving or Thanksgiving I think would be rushing it.

I still say if it’s PG-13, there should be a mass boycott. But either way, damn, I hope the CGI is kept to a bare mininum on this one (something I have decreased hopes for, seeing who tweeted this news in the first place…).

Thanks Jeff for a great post. Henry South on this project is really going to be amazing. I have a personal affinity to this project because my wife launched a personal message to Ridley Scott to be considered for either the lead female role or just to be apart of the project.
