Paramount Pictures has released the first Allied trailer for director Robert Zemeckis' World War II spy thriller/romance/drama. Brad Pitt stars as an intelligence officer who encounters a French Resistance fighter (Marion Cotillard) in 1942 North Africa. The two are subsequently reunited in London, but tensions rise as the war surmounts pressures on them both.

The film is an original story scripted by Steven Knight (Peaky BlindersLocke), who told Collider's own Steven Weintraub last August that it's based on a true story that was told to him at the age of 21 that he's carried around with him all this time:

“This is a very odd story. I was in Texas working as a dishwasher and doing all sorts of weird things. I was going out with an English girl at the time and her auntie lived in Texas, and she got talking about her brother who had been in the S.O.E., the British Secret Service if you like, and she told me this story that just stayed with me. I’ve always known it would be a film, and now it’s gonna be the ultimate."

Zemeckis is undoubtedly one of our most exciting filmmakers with credits ranging from Back to the Future to Forrest Gump to Cast Away, but after nearly a decade working in the world of motion-capture animated films, his return to live-action has been a tad underwhelming. Flight and The Walk are fine, but they didn't reach the heights of some of his earlier work. With Allied, however, all the pieces are in place for a mighty comeback of sorts, and the prospect of seeing Zemeckis working within the World War II genre with two impeccable actors in front of the camera is reason enough to see this thing.

Check out the Allied trailer below. Produced by Graham King, the film opens November 23rd and also stars Lizzy Caplan and Matthew Goode.

Here’s the official synopsis for Allied:

“ALLIED” is the story of intelligence officer Max Vatan (Pitt), who in 1942 North Africa encounters French Resistance fighter Marianne Beausejour (Cotillard) on a deadly mission behind enemy lines. Reunited in London, their relationship is threatened by the extreme pressures of the war.
