Amazing Fan Made STAR WARS Documentary Filled With Alternate Takes, Audio From Cast and Crew, Bloopers, More

Star Wars Darth Vader slice

No matter what making of documentary George Lucas decides to release on the upcoming Star Wars Blu-ray/DVD box set later this year, I don’t know how it’ll be better than what YouTube user jambedavdar has already done.  That’s because he’s crafted a truly amazing doc on the making of Star Wars that includes video clips, audio from the cast and crew, alternate takes, bloopers, and text facts/insights into the development and creation of one of the biggest movies of all time.  I haven’t been this impressed by a fan made documentary in…well…ever.  Especially because of the limited alternate footage that’s available.

As a lifelong Star Wars fan who has seen and heard countless interviews with the filmmakers and cast, I cannot believe how comprehensive this doc is.  As you watch, on the top or bottom of the screen it’ll say where the video/audio comes from and he mixes in footage that I’ve never seen.  And on top of all that, it’s not some ten minute short.  It’s over two hours!  Again, if you’re a Star Wars fan, hit the jump to be impressed:

This is amazing – best making of documentary ever! I bet it’s better than anything they put on those Blurays.

Jeeze guys, you’d think from the reaction it was like someone discovered perfect prints of the unaltered trilogy. Don’t get me wrong this doc is awesome, especially considering it came from a fan. But it’s nonetheless just a fan edit of previous Doc material.

Any non fair-weather Star Wars fan has already seen the Laser Disc special features, Empire Of Dreams, the infamous making of Return Of The Jedi VHS, and probably read that mammoth making of book. This was just a condensed version of those. There’s nothing exactly new here. Personally I thought Empire Of Dreams was much better.

Tons and tons of documentaries are made with (or entirely composed of) previously-available material, and while many fans have seen much of this before, it’s probably been a while since they’ve popped in those Laser Discs or VHS tapes. And for those who haven’t, this is even more of a treat (and achievement).

Did anyone else see the IG-88 head in the cantina scene? You can see it behind the bar at 4:36 in part 6

Yep, respect to George Lucas, even though the prequels sucked.

It’s not really a documentary, of course. It’s a cobbled together extended cut with pop-ups and commentary. Not really that impressive when his pacing is basically just dictated by the movie. And that’s the hard part of a real documentary, assembling the footage. He just follows the film, adding comments and alternate footage as he goes.

Interesting, but nothing I haven’t seen.

Neat, but doesn’t hold a candle to Mr. Plinkett’s reviews: http://www.redlettermedia.com

Jamie, I thought I knew everything there was to know about Star Wars but I was wrong. I thoroughly enjoyed this from start to finish. Thank you for sharing it with us! Impressive… most impressive.
