Though Sony went ahead and announced release dates for both The Amazing Spider-Man 3 and The Amazing Spider-Man 4 yesterday, the first Spidey sequel is still currently in production in New York City under director Marc Webb.  We’ve already seen a bevy of set photos that provided glimpses at the film’s villains, Electro (Jamie Foxx) and Rhino (Paul Giamatti), as well as newcomer Shailene Woodley as Mary Jane Watson, but now we may have semi-confirmation about which comics favorite character another castmember is playing.  Felicity Jones joined the film quite a while ago, but thus far the actress’ role has yet to be confirmed.  During a recent interview, though, Jones’ body language and awkward answer could very well be interpreted as a half-hearted “yes” in response to being asked about playing a specific character.

Hit the jump for more, but beware of possible spoilers for the film.  The Amazing Spider-Man 2 opens in 3D on May 2, 2014.

Ever since Jones was first cast in Spider-Man 2, rumors have swirled that she would be playing Felicia Hardy aka the antagonistic Black Cat.  Speaking with Jan Gilbert (via Bleeding Cool) in anticipation of her upcoming film Breathe In (which is fantastic, by the way. Read my review here), Jones was asked straight up if she was looking forward to everyone seeing her as Black Cat, after which she squirmed and said:

“Um, well, uh, possibly.  I don’t know.  Yeah, I kind of—it’s um.  Yeah, if that happens, that would be wonderful.”

Jones could just very well be confused over whether she’s supposed to reveal that she’s playing Felicia Hardy in the first place, so it’s still uncertain if we’ll see the character transform into Black Cat in The Amazing Spider-Man 2.  That being said, the actress does look quite uncomfortable here, so I wouldn’t be surprised if Black Cat turns out to be an additional villain in the sequel.  Given that Sony seems to be setting up its own little mini universe with the Spider-Man films and numerous sequels, it’s also possible that Black Cat could play a larger role in Spider-Man 3 or 4.
