Has Felicity Jones Confirmed Who She Is Playing in THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2?

Though Sony went ahead and announced release dates for both The Amazing Spider-Man 3 and The Amazing Spider-Man 4 yesterday, the first Spidey sequel is still currently in production in New York City under director Marc Webb.  We’ve already seen a bevy of set photos that provided glimpses at the film’s villains, Electro (Jamie Foxx) and Rhino (Paul Giamatti), as well as newcomer Shailene Woodley as Mary Jane Watson, but now we may have semi-confirmation about which comics favorite character another castmember is playing.  Felicity Jones joined the film quite a while ago, but thus far the actress’ role has yet to be confirmed.  During a recent interview, though, Jones’ body language and awkward answer could very well be interpreted as a half-hearted “yes” in response to being asked about playing a specific character.

Hit the jump for more, but beware of possible spoilers for the film.  The Amazing Spider-Man 2 opens in 3D on May 2, 2014.

amazing-spider-man-2-black-catEver since Jones was first cast in Spider-Man 2, rumors have swirled that she would be playing Felicia Hardy aka the antagonistic Black Cat.  Speaking with Jan Gilbert (via Bleeding Cool) in anticipation of her upcoming film Breathe In (which is fantastic, by the way. Read my review here), Jones was asked straight up if she was looking forward to everyone seeing her as Black Cat, after which she squirmed and said:

“Um, well, uh, possibly.  I don’t know.  Yeah, I kind of—it’s um.  Yeah, if that happens, that would be wonderful.”

Jones could just very well be confused over whether she’s supposed to reveal that she’s playing Felicia Hardy in the first place, so it’s still uncertain if we’ll see the character transform into Black Cat in The Amazing Spider-Man 2.  That being said, the actress does look quite uncomfortable here, so I wouldn’t be surprised if Black Cat turns out to be an additional villain in the sequel.  Given that Sony seems to be setting up its own little mini universe with the Spider-Man films and numerous sequels, it’s also possible that Black Cat could play a larger role in Spider-Man 3 or 4.

Watch the video below to see Jones answer for yourself.  The Amazing Spider-Man 2 talk begins around the 1:00 mark.

Sneaky and smart from the interviewer. Instead of asking “Who are you playing?”, we now basically have an answer. You can just see that Felicity wasn’t expecting that and was scrambling for a politically correct answer. Well-played!

Oh now we’re at three maybe four villains? That’s great cause that always makes the movie better!

Actually, five: Electro, Rhino, Green Goblin, Vulture (Colm Feore’s character) and Black Cat.

Just like it did on Spiderman 3 :-)

I think they are introducing characters to the universe, but we only going to see a couple turn into their villain alter egos this time around.

      • AaronS12

EXACTLY! Just because all these characters are in this film doesn’t mean they will become villains. We know Electro and Rhino are the main villians of The Amazing Spider-Man 2. We don’t have any other proof that Colm Feore, Chris Cooper & Felicity Jones are indeed playing villian roles. Chris Cooper may be playing Norman Osborn but that doesn’t mean he will be playing Green Goblin. For all we know, they could be setting up characters as potential villains in future instalments.

Yay! This movie just got flushed further down the crapper.

    That’s good

i think she’s not going to be the villain in the next movie or anything maybe just an introduction (sony knows too well what happens if you put too many villains) but they’re setting it up for that villain league (i forgot its name) where black cat is part of as well as elektro and rhino

      Sinister Six?

  • RiddleThemThis

Is she going to be blonde or are we just saying screw it to the way characters look in the comics?

    • nerdgasm

She isn’t blond in the comics so apparently you dont care what they look like – her hair is STARK WHITE and in some iterations it’s a wig. So as Black Cat if it’s a wig it really wouldnt matter what her real hair color is as Hardy. so shut the fuck up… bet you were pissed they took away supes red panties.

      • RiddleThemThis

Are you joking me? Black Cat has white hair, sure. But I clearly remember felicia hardy having blonde hair.

I consulted with marvel’s website just to make sure I wasn’t imagining things, her hair is listed as “Platinum Blonde”. So while it is lighter colored, there is still a hint of yellow to it.

Ultimate version of Felicia Hardy had dark brunette hair.

I thought she had black hair and it turned white when she put on the mask. I haven’t seen it in forever.

i didn’t think black cat was a villain

Also Norman Osbourne is suppose to be in it as well as Harry and it’s been confirmed that Vulture is casted too. TOO MANY CHARACTERS. I went from excited to worried.

For all those bickering about ‘too many characters’, ‘too many villians’. Please stop.
Antagonists to protagonist, is technically a ‘villain’, but it is a character all the same.
This film director clearly is showing more depth than just a black and white ‘good guy, bad guy’ scheme of things.
It’s all about how you employ it as well.
She could be a robber of some sort, antogonistic, and through confrontations, you learn more about her, and she starts gaining that ‘Black Cat’ name-sake.
Have any of you read a novel, or comic book? Seriously.
Sure, films have very simplistic writings or tend to, but it doesn’t mean that putting 3 or 4 people that could possibly have their own things going on that might interfere with Peter will destroy a film. I am someone who is digging this idea of them adding more threads to the ‘web’(pun intended). Besides Peter sort of helps create his baddies.
If Pete hadn’t tried to stop Conners and he found a way to get his arm and turn into a giant reptile hybrid anyway, then the city would just get full of lizards. Peter stopped that. movie one.
Now we’re going to see him don the suit more and go about trying to stop people who do things he doesn’t like or that he feels isn’t right, and stuff. You know, hero worthy stuff.
‘A hero is only as good as his villain.’
