Casting is currently underway on Sony’s fast-moving sequel The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and it appears that producers are changing course in filling the integral role of Harry Osborn. Marc Webb is returning to direct with Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone back as the film’s leads, but the follow-up is poised to include a tantalizing group of newcomers that should ring familiar to fans of the comics. Shailene Woodley is set to play eventual love interest Mary Jane in what may amount to a larger role in the third film, and negotiations are underway to nail down Jamie Foxx as the film’s villain Electro.
We recently heard that Dane DeHaan (Chronicle), Alden Ehrenreich (Beautiful Creatures) and Brady Corbet (Melancholia) were under consideration for the role of Harry Obsorn, but now it appears that Sony is looking for a different type of actor to take on the part. Hit the jump for more.
For those unfamiliar with the source material (or Sam Raimi’s previous film trilogy), Harry Osborn is a close friend to Peter Parker who turns villainous much later down the road. Per Heat Vision, the producers and filmmakers are testing a new group of hopefuls, as they’re now looking at actors “with characteristics that include athleticism and good looks” for the role of Harry Osborn. A tad harsh, no?
The actors now testing for the part include Sam Claflin (Snow White and the Huntsman), Eddie Redmayne (My Week With Marilyn, Les Miserables), Douglas Booth (LOL, Noah), and Boyd Holbrook (Hatfields & McCoys, The Host). Claflin is the best known of the bunch, but I find it curious that he’s in line for the high profile part as he recently landed the coveted role of Finnick Odair in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. I’m still pulling for DeHaan to win out in the end, though I wouldn’t be upset with Claflin or Redmayne in the role either. As production is slated to begin early next year, we should hear a decision regarding the Osborn role sooner rather than later. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is set to open on May 2, 2014.

God, this just shows that the production team haven’t learnt from last time. TASM suffered from a serious identity crisis, and to jump from considering scrawny, outsider-looking guys to more athletic, good-looking actors has shown a lack of clarity in their vision. It doesn’t matter who is cast: they fact the producers don’t have a clear idea of what they want is more important.
Damn, so Sony pretty much just publicly called the first three guys too ugly to be in their movie. Thats kinda cold.
As a fellow model, they were too ugly for the part.
It’s not a shock that they want someone with talent and good looks also. They’re following in the footsteps of James Franco a Gucci model to boot. Whatever, you thought of Franco performance he was certainly unique and still much loved as Harry. It seems he truly has set the template on what the next Harry should be like. To me, James Franco will always be Harry but it will be interesting to see who wins the part in the end.
Oh,come on,please don’t pick freaking Sam Claflin instead of Dane Dehaan. That guy has zero charisma.
Still pulling for either DeHaan or Ehrenreich. Redmayne would be great, can’t wait to see him in Les Miz, but I agree, he’d be too similar to Andrew.
F*ck this f*cking movie, Sony. F*ck it right the f*ck in your face.
Don’t they all look just like Andrew Garfield himself – all dark and a bit geeky? Especially Eddie R. Is there a dark ‘twins’ plot being written into the script? Or just brothers?
If Sony thinks the first 3 guys are ugly. i shoul look like a fucking monter to them.
Oh those guys? …..yeah who are those guys? Keep reaching Sony, keep reaching.
pretty boy 1, 2 or 3? Talent isn’t even a factor anymore.
