One of the most anticipated panels at this year’s Comic-Con is Sony’s The Amazing Spider-Man. Directed by Marc Webb, the film marks a reboot of the franchise following Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire’s first trilogy, and fans are eager to see how this new version of Spidey stacks up. Steve spoke with screenwriter Steve Kloves last week at length about the project, and now Webb has opened up, discussing how he plans to reinvent the character, the favoring of practical stuntwork over CGI, and the pressure of impressing audiences at this week’s Comic-Con. Hit the jump to see what he had to say.
Speaking with Hero Complex, Webb talked about how his reinvention of Spider-Man manifests itself in the film:
“Peter Parker is a science whiz. If you look back to the early Stan Lee and Steve Ditko comics, he’s a nerd with big glasses. What was important in those early comics was this notion that Peter Parker is an outsider and how we define that in a contemporary context.”
The director also spoke about how his Peter Parker will differ from Raimi’s:
“So much of the DNA of the character is the fact that he was a kid when he got bit. He is imperfect, he is immature and has a bit of a punk rock instinct. In his soul he’s still a 90-pound weakling even after [the transformative bite].”
With regards to the stuntwork, Webb said that he wanted to take a much more practical approach as opposed to relying on CGI, especially with the web slinging scenes:
“One of the things we tried to do was keep the stunts more grounded physically and that was a huge challenge because you have a character whose abilities are superhuman…We spent months and months and months developing rigs so he could swing in a way that wasn’t computer-generated. Obviously there’s going to be enhancements and CG [sequences], but it’s based in a physical reality and that’s a new technique [for this film brand].”
Finally, Webb commented on the pressure of impressing the Comic-Con audience:
“A lot of our credibility is based on fan perception in some way. I’m really excited to connect with the fans. I feel like we’ve been a little bit under the radar in terms of our communication. I think it’s a great way to announce the new qualities that we’re putting out there and just connect with the audience in a way that we haven’t before.”
It’s good to hear that Webb is approaching the character from a fairly different perspective than Raimi’s Spider-Man films. While the project sounds promising, we’ll have a much better idea of what’s in store for us after the film’s Comic-Con panel this week. Be sure to check back here on Collider for full-scale coverage from the Con. The Amazing Spider-Man opens in 3D on July 3rd, 2012.
Are we going to keep rebooting these comic book movie till the apocalypse comes? Even then am sure God has a IMAX and wants to see some more spider man
Im excited, I’m eager to put Sam Raimis trilogy in the back burner, those movies have no staying power, i watched all 3 recently, they already feel dated as fuck and they never felt like the comics. They had a hallmark movie quality to them that I always hated.
Bring on the real Spider Man, one that has to deal with running out of webb shooters.
another wannabe chris nolan i see
What the hell?
Wow, I had no idea Marc Webb was directing the new spider man! That is so exciting to me!

Cant say any thing before trailer , but i have a feeling this one is not gonna be as good as the previous Spiderman by Riami
I was gutted at first as I liked the Raimi films (well, 1 & 2) But, the more of this reboot I see, the better I think it will be.
The fact that Webb is using less CGI for Spideys swinging is already a bonus, as in the Raimi versions the transition from cgi swinger to Toby landing was Jarring at best. Looked Awful! But keeping it minimal sounds great.
I cant wait to see the Lizard in action.
(Oh, and that suit, before people complain, is NOT Rubber. (Had this debate on another site with people saying how can a school kid build a rubber suit.) DUH!
I predict this movie will tank. It’s definitely opening nowhere near the numbers of any previous Spiderman (it won’t even touch SM3 numbers). And, they’re gonna have to reboot again after this one does lackluster business. Way to go, Sony!
The leaked trailer is up on youtube if you all want to check it out.
Wow the teaser is really good.
That teaser is not at all what I suspected. I am all for the reboot, but this feels a little too dark for Spider-Man. Spidey should be fun and energetic. Spider-Man is a smart-alec. I hope they don’t lose that in this film.
I also noticed the Avengers teaser is out there now too, very cool. I have high hopes for that as well.
The teaser didn’t give any “dark” impression to me at all. It just doesn’t seem to be cheesy like Raimi’s take was.
Also, Spider-Man has had plenty of dark story-lines. Prime example is when he was wearing the Symbiote costume. That was a dark era in the Spider-Man comic book stories. Raimi however ruined it by not only truncating it and ruining Venom (which in my book meant that the series needed to be rebooted if you ruin Venom) by also treated it like a joke.
DVD rental…^^
The number one problem I had with the original three was Tobey Maguire’s portrayal of Spiderman. He was so innefectual and wimpy. One of the more endearing things about Spiderman as a character is his sarcastic, tongue-in-cheek dialogue and demeanor. Spidey as a shy, vulnerable pansy just didn’t work for me. I hated it. And it sounds to me like nothing is going to change here on this one. I don’t give a crap about web-shooters, give Spidey his swagger back!
Yeah, I had the same problem with Tobey. He’s got this passive, deer-in-the-headlights look that never jived with what I knew about Peter Parker. This new kid is a way better match.
yeah, yeah… whatever, the suit still sucks!
What will the world get tired of first; 3D films, re-re-rebooted franchises or comic book films?
Amazing Spider-Man is all three rolled into one.
BUT, from what I’ve seen, I bet this film will be better in every way than Sam Raimi’s films.Better plot, tighter script, better acting, better casting, less lame over-sentimental cry-baby scenes, and better effects. And a better suit, to boot. And all those moaning about the Spidey reboot now WILL BE salivating once it is released.
Green lighting a “green lantern” sequel, is pure masochism, though.
Better suit ? Really ? ^^
