Sony has announced that Marc Webb’s Spider-Man reboot will be officially titled The Amazing Spider-Man.  That’s not too much of a surprise.  I figured they would pull the title from one of the many Spider-Man comics and I assumed the title would either be “The Amazing Spider-Man” or “The Spectacular Spider-Man”.  At least we can now stop referring to it as “Marc Webb’s Spider-Man reboot.”

Sony has also released a new image of Spidey, this time with the mask on.  I have to say that I’m not crazy about it.  The bug-yellow eyes weird me out and the mesh-pattern feels too busy.  Also, the design of the gloves gives me flashbacks to the Spider-Man 2099 costume and that’s not a good thing.  The image also gives us a better look at the new web-shooters, which look fine.

Hit the jump to check out the new image along with a press release from Sony.  The Amazing Spider-Man stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, and Rhys Ifans.  The film opens in 3D on July 3, 2012.

UPDATE: Steve here. After we posted the image of the costume (which I like a lot more than Matt), I noticed the stuff on his hands.  Here’s a close-up image of that part of the costume.  While I have no idea what’s going on with his fingers, I love the attention to detail.  The only negative about The Amazing Spider-Man is that we have to wait over a year to see it.

And here’s the press release:

“THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN”

TO BE RELEASED JULY 3, 2012

CULVER CITY, Calif., February 14, 2011 – Columbia Pictures announced today that the title of the next Spider-Man film will be The Amazing Spider-Man.

The studio simultaneously released a photo of Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man, the first shot of Garfield in the famous full mask and suit.

The film, which is now in production and is being shot entirely in 3D, will be released on July 3, 2012.  The film stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Denis Leary, Campbell Scott, Irrfan Khan, Martin Sheen, and Sally Field.  The film is directed by Marc Webb from a screenplay by James Vanderbilt and Alvin Sargent and Steve Kloves based on the Marvel Comic Book by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko.  Laura Ziskin, Avi Arad, and Matt Tolmach are producing the Marvel Entertainment production for Columbia Pictures.  The executive producers are Stan Lee, Kevin Feige, and Michael Grillo.  The film’s official website is http://www.TheAmazingSpiderMan-movie.com.

Dude… what are you talking about. The costume looks wicked.

    • Ed

Second that, the costume reminds me a bit more of the original Ben Reilly costume than the 2099 one, I think the golden bug eyes have more to do with the eye material being a reflective greyish/silver just as they were in the Raimi trilogy http://tiny.cc/u564m

  • Pxvel

At least they’re trying something diferent with the desing. I’ll set my judgement the moment I see the movie. Doesn’t look bad at all but neither is something to write home about. We’ll see…

  • Lt. Ripley

    The Spider-Man 2099 costume is awesome. You’re a moron.

    • Devil’s Advocate

Lt. Ripley… Why is it people like you always have to add an insult when someone doesn’t agree with your opinion? Aesthetics are a matter of taste, and saying that someone who has different taste than you is a moron only shows how insecure and pathetic you are, that you must passive-aggressively be hurtful to try to punish those who don’t see your every thought as law. And if you want to make an argument with validity, like I just did, try going to college instead posting insults on here. Boo ya!

      • Lt. Ripley

No passive-aggression here. Just one dude callin’ another dude a moron outright.

      • Dizzy

        Lol he said Boo Ya

      • Cracker Jack

So by not doing the “smart” thing and racking up thousands of dollars of student loan debt over empty promises that he or she will achieve the American dream simply because they went to college… that person is a moron? (note: I agree that Lt. Ripley is being asinine in harassing someone for not sharing the same opinion… but your remark regarding college is a little off base.) There are places called libraries… where you can read things… and subsequently learn things… yeah.

Costume looks fine. But that is not Andrew Garfield , it’s a stunt double. Look at the difference between the two pictures . Garfield is skinny as a stick in the one with his mask on .

    • Peter Tangen

Hey Mickey, I’m the photographer that took the photograph and I can promise you it is in fact Andrew Garfield.

      • Max

mm hmm…. not sure I buy that, mr. “photographer who took the photograph.”

      • DJ

actually unless hes a SUPER nerd if you google peter tangens name hes definatley a photographer and has done past spidey films. so my question to him is…when will we get more?! :)

    • Dev1359

He’s in a very concealed pose in which you can only really make out the size of his biceps, which obviously are going to look a little bigger with the way his arms are flexed compared to the way they look in the first picture. And how do you know he hasn’t put on more muscle in between the time they took that first picture and the time he took this one?

  • Steve ‘Frosty’ Weintraub

this is one of those times I really disagree with Matt. I think the costume looks bad ass and cannot wait to see it in motion in the trailer.

  • Mickey

I meant without his mask on

  • Budders

No clue what this guy is talking about. Looks pretty freakin sweet to me.

  • IllusionOfLife

I’ve been hating on this movie since it’s been announced, and the set photos of the suit looked awful, but… this actually looks pretty cool. I’m also not a huge fan of the yellow eyes, but other than that, I could definitely live with this suit.

  • LAME

Photoshop does make things look awesome. Doesn’t it?

    • Dizzy

Yes, god, photoshop, cgi, fuck, we get it. everything is. just like every song you’ve ever heard since the late nineties has been auto-tuned, only not cranked up to the obvious levels of cher and t-pain to hide the fact that they don’t sound so great even with auto-tune, subsequently making a fad out of it. (the equivalent of say, if less-than-fit celebrities made a photo fad out of being grossly over-photoshopped.)

it’s 2011. we have color tv’s, cellular phones, and entertainment is digital. It’s an improvement. unless you preferred puppets and stop motion clay-mation, in which case you probably live alone and work at the post office. …In which case i’ve just violated my cardinal rule of acknowledging anyone who works at the post office’s existence as a person.

Fuck…. whatever, can you tape something for me on your vcr? I no have a tivo i’m two estupid.

  • Ringbearer1420

If you calling this Amazing Spider-Man, it’s needs to actually be basses of Stan Lee and Steve Ditko’s comic. Which clearly this isn’t. Yeah it looks cool, face it most spider man or batman costumes a figures are… but cool isn’t what’s required.
I have no respect for something that just tinkers with the previous costume and doesn’t go back to the material.
It’s funny how people said 3 was ‘lazy’ and that Raimi used the effects from the Mummy to do Sandman, which of course was utter bs, and no one got that Raimi was actually capturing the tone of the 80′s spidey. Besides Venom was still Venom unlike defy character in the X-men films who are only X-Men in name only.

    • Jeff

      NERD!

Just kidding. Seriously, though, even as only a casual Spidey comics fan I’m still reeling by how bad the last movie was. When Venom’s face peeled back so Eric from That 70′s Show could ham through his dialog, the child in me died a little.

They should have made Venom more like the video games. (I know, and I called you a nerd). Venom should have his own voice, something deep and raspy, and should be a separate personality that takes over when the transformation from Eddie Brock to Venom happens.

They fucked up Venom for the same reason they always have Spidey’s mask get f***ed up in the final fight scene to the point that he has to remove it, because they’re obsessed with having the actor’s face on screen in the big finale. F*** that.

it looks really sporty and stupid. the original design was much more organic, and i hate how he built the web device. it works much better as part of his powers. the first two movies were some of the best superhero movies ever made, and it’s really not time for a reboot, especially from marc webb.

    • Dev1359

How the hell does organic webbing work better? It’s even less logical than mechanical web shooters when you consider the fact that spiders spin web out of their butts, they don’t shoot them from their limbs. The mechanical web shooters are a testament to the geeky genius and resourcefulness of Peter Parker…and those “oh shi-” moments when he’d run out of webbing in the middle of a fight in the comics always added another fun element to the character.

      • vincere vel

Really? You think it makes more sense for a high school student living in the 80s to create, through a “knack for science”, a fast firing, re-loadable web shooter? Really? You think that makes more sense than just naturally having webbing?

      • LAME

        @vicere vel:

Actually the web shooters do make more sense than “just naturally having webbing”. While the latter was somewhat a cool idea, the truth is that is just plain stupid that “biological shooters” appeared on him. Also, Sam Raimi’s Spidey (or Tobey Maguire’s Peter Parker) never actually stopped being a nerd. Now, with the implementation of those mechanical shooters in “The Amazing Spider-Man” they need to justify how is that Peter made them; so hopefully they’ll be showing a smarter Pete in this movie…

What? Is that too much intelligence for a high schooler? Well, there are actually many gifted kids in the real world. Not everyone spends all the time watching tv or playing videogames… or discussing bullshit about upcoming movies on the internet……………. believe it or not!

Now, go find a book and try reading it. Maybe any future children you may have will come with a true gift (this goes to all of you/us).

      • prashant

if thats the case it seems that peter parker should develop extra limbs just like spider, he must have multiple eyes just like spider, he must have v shaped jaws just like spider. My friend if u understand it is never logic its just imagination. I mean consider this ” oh! my multipurpose web slinging mechanism needs a Catridge for throwing webs. I hope if any general store is open at this point of time. Will u excuse me mister Rhino, Hey doctor octopussy hold on uy tentacles bcoz i m gonna wack ur ass soon”. The main core of his power is Webs as compared to Spider-sense which is equally important(again i dont think spiders have SPIDER-SENSE its non-sense) but its imagination which we feel, inhibit, accept and enjoy. I feel the mechanism for WEBS is bullshit idea.

      • LAME

        @prashant:

Well, the simple idea of having a ‘Spider… Man’ is bullshit. We can start with that.

      • SavageEarth

i think the suit looks like it was made for a million dollars by a high end fashion designer. not a geeky high schooler. so much for all that ‘realism’ that was being bandied about when this ‘re-boot’ was being launched. and, for the record, organic web-shooters make more sense. where does he store his web-juice? what happens when he runs out? how come he doesn’t sell his miraculous scientific break-through tensile strength webbing fluid to a huge company and live like bruce wayne? i guess none of these questions will be answered when garfield mopes his way across screens in the near future. yay. spider-tween.

      • LAME

        @SavageEarth:

Hey, did you born yesterday? I assume, ’cause rest of the fans know about how the web shooters work (the ones who knew Spidey before Sam Raimi’s films), and how Pete/Spidey deals with it when he runs out and all that stuff. About “selling the tech to become rich”, by logic if Pete does so he would be also selling his identity as Spider-Man. I mean, it would be obvious to link the characters (like: “Hey, how come Peter Parker is selling this technology that looks like Spidey’s web…. Hmm….. Wait a minute!”). I mean, c’mon, that would be stupid.

Regarding the costume, well.. let’s just hope the screenwriter justified it’s origin. You know, pretty much like Batman’s in Batman Begins.

  • aaronsullivan

I’m liking it. First time images from this movie have felt “cool” and engaging.

  • Nick

haha fanboys are the worst, who gives a fuck if the design on his gloves are a little different or the eyes are yellow. he still looks a hell of alot like every other spiderman interpretation. a good movie doesnt rest on slight details of a suit, its whether or not the story is good. reserve judgement for when the movie actually comes out, i recall many people writing off heath ledger as a terrible choice for the joker long before anyone saw the film. im sure those people bit their tongue real fast.

    • Daniel

But this isn’t a debate about the actor, it’s a debate about the suit. Personally, I have high hopes for Andrew Garfield. But I still think the suit looks terrible.

  • junierizzle

I also think the suit looks bad ass, gritty even. I think it looks cooler than the one from Raimi’s films.

You can’t really judge it based on those set photos either. Everything looks different in the final film footage.

  • JT

At first I wasn’t a fanof the reboot. But Raimi’s movies turned into a soap opera. To me Tobey as Peter Parker was the equivalent of Keaton as Bruce Wayne. I think Garfield looks much more like the (various) comic iterations of Peter Parker. As far as the costume, I don’t really dig the red and blue gloves — but this photo alone kind of justifies them — it helps the fingers stand out more when he’s crouched (against the red boot in the BG). As far as the mesh, yeah, it’s a bit much in the still BUT since they’re shooting 3D, which is video and not film, they probably needed to add texture to the suit to help give it weight visually.

    • battleangel

I’ll agree the Andrew Garfield seems like an odd choice here (personally, I would have loved a wise ass mid 30s John Krasinski peter parker who isn’t dealing with teen drama, really does make his income as a photographer, and is married to MJ- and could just focus on being the Webhead without getting all conflicted)…

but the reason I’m responding is because I actually think Michael Keaton was the perfect Bruce Wayne. He’s the only guy who’s played Bruce for what he really is- a raving psycho! That “you wanna get nuts?? Let’s get nuts!!” – that’s what a real life Bruce Wayne would be like. I loved the detail of the room Bruce has with the weird suits of armor. Very eccentric. To me, this was the most believable take on a traumatized billionaire who has a thing for dressing up at night and beating up petty thugs. Of course, this character assessment goes out the window when Batman actually starts killing people (although I think that also probably skews closer to reality) in the film… but barring that, I’m not sure we’ll ever get a more interesting or human take on Bruce Wayne than what we see of his arc in the Burton films.

Not expecting that level of depth from the Andrew Garfield parker…

      • Cameron

You clearly havn’t seen Boy A, The Red Riding trilogy or even Never Let Me Go. If your looking for depth, Garfeld will most likely be the one to deliver.

      • Yahzee Skellington

Andrew Garfield is an actor with proven talent, but that doesn’t mean he can do fine a the Spider-Guy (I mean, look at George Clooney!).
Some actors seem born to play a part, like Michael Keaton WAS Batman, with all due respect to Christian Bale.
I’m still of the mind that Tobey Maguire embodied what I believe is a more real, and deep take on Peter Parker AND Spider-Man…

      • Ally-Lin

Since when is an immature loser/man child who cries all the time and has little to no character development whatsoever considered a more real, and deep take on Peter Parker? Furthermore, last time I checked Spider-Man was a witty trash talker who the villains wanted dead just so they can shut him up.

I am not saying Garfield’s performance will be the “be all, end all” but you should give him a chance before you consider Maguire’s performance to be superior.

      • SavageEarth

@Ally: How was Maguire an ‘immature loser/man child’?! He seemed like a kind, caring young high school graduate who was dealing with the death of his uncle and the weight of having spider-like powers, to me. Maybe you have a chip on your shoulder, but for a lot of us: Maguire IS Spider-Man. When you said immature loser/man child I thought you were describing that picture of Garfield, his backpack and his crotch-rot.

      • Chaster

SavageEarth: Pot meet Kettle, Kettle meet Pot.

      • Highball

@SavageEarth: First you call someone out for having a chip on their shoulder, and then you start criticizing Garfield just because your unhappy with the reboot! Talk about being a hypocrite!

      • SavageEarth

You’re right. I do get worked up over some ridiculous sh*t.

  • baseball55

sony you are fucking this movie up!!! yellow eyes? really? wtf man this suit is god awful

  • Fredrick Foswell

Two words. Web. Shooters. Thumbs up! And the picture in all looks pretty fantastic IMO. Screams the very essence of Spider-Man. Gives me faith that Webb and company are going in the right direction. Now to see this baby in action! Bring on the trailer!

  • turd ferguson

I hope the third reboot after this one will bring back organic web production

  • Non-stick-Spidey?

Question…. How is he supposed to stick to walls with Goalkeepers rubber gloves on, and Silver soles on his feet?

The last suit, was very thin material and Parkers Spider hairy fingertips came through the material. Is this new Spidey Magnetic?

Aside from the gloves/shoes/webshooters and net shaped webbing over the mask/ and filthy loins. I like the costume! And love the silver eyes, remind me of the creepy 70s mask eyes from the TV show.

    • Mona

Yeah that was my peeve with the spider man films too. It’s like Toby’s cntoract required so much “face time” per film. Off topic – I don’t know about these reboots though, I think Hollywood is getting way out of hand. It’s like in 2 years we’ll get another Batman reboot. . . with someone else. . . and start the whole thing over again. Part of the reason I think the Superman reboot never worked was because honestly, Reeves did do an awesome job and for the most part the films did do a service (IMO) to the comic. Do the majority of comic readers feel the first Spider Man movies were so bad that another attempt needs to be made?

    • Bryan

masaki – This was an amazing post. Agreed with much that was here.As a ocitifn writer, I feel some of the pressure and temptation. There is something about I can’t articulate it well, but this sort of implicit belief that something broken or sinful is more art-worthy than something whole. As if, for example, a portrayal of a significant, meaningful marriage is somehow antithetical to a good story. Worse, that it’s simply boring. But I suspect that really, the problem is that it just happens to be incredibly difficult to bring forth anything of genuine creative value without being trapped by formulaic ethical bounds. Like how to make a marriage really stay, well, good in a ocitifnal world without become trite and really just a tract about protestant marriage ethics. In the end it’s sad, a real failure of imagination and risk. As if kids really need relatable character which are, in fact, simply dead.

  • ti

Fuck the haters. This suit is boss! So fucking excited to see this film

  • Michael D’Angelo

As for Steve’s question at the bottom of the post, about what’s going on with Spidey’s fingers, I don’t know if I’m answering your specific question, but his fingers seem like they’re pushing on black pads that activate the web shooters.

Or maybe you’re asking, Why does Spidey’s fingers look so funny with the red patches of material? You’ll have to ask Spidey and his designer. :)

  • Jeff

Looks good. Couldn’t possibly be worse than Spider-Man 3. I’ll never forgive them for f***ing up Venom so badly.

    • dogg

Yeah, Venom should’ve had at least one movie all to himself as villain. I never followed Spider-man comics or anything, but even I was interested in Venom enough to pick one up whenever he was on the cover.

  • Daniel

Argh. I have yet to see anything that makes me think the design of the suit is not terrible.

I mean, for starters, this is a Spider-Man suit without webs on it. Those black lines on his head? Not to be pedantic, but…that’s a grid, not webs.

The alternating-color fingers are busy and overthought.

On the plus side, the black trim on the legs works well. And I think it’s unlikely that the eyes are going to be this color yellow – I think they’re just reflective, and have been tweaked in this shot to provide contrast to the red. Time will tell there.

But, ultimately, it seems like the design has been changed simply so the studio will have a brand-new action figure to sell. It isn’t radically different enough to be badass, or retro enough to be classic, or anything. It’s just…clumsy looking.

That said, props to Peter Tangen. It’s a nice, moody photograph. I just wish I liked the suit better.

I think it looks great! I can’t wait until this movie comes out.

  • Aeonstrife

I must say I am impressed by the new Spider-Man suit. It has the practically of being based on the real clothing of a speedsuit which is a vast improvement over Raimi’s Hollywood designer costume with silver web highlights, it looks like the classic suit while being given an updated cool style, and it has the teenage gymnast build that is standard for Peter Parker.

The title of the film is perfect. I just hope the film will indeed be based on Stan Lee’s definitive run.

  • Sparky

uggg, those eyes remind me of:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mcxioU7AMM4

I can’t stand them. I dig the web shooters and I can give the costume designer props for being a bit creative. However, those eyes and gloves are going to annoy me(uggg blue fingers!).

I don’t like who they cast as Peter Paker/Spider-man; the costume is meh and every update for this movie makes me sader and sader.

It feels like Dragonball Evolution all over again. I kept seeing terrible choices and yet I told myself to wait for a trailer. I’m going to wait but I can’t say I’m on board for this. In a sea of Super Hero movies, it’s hard to look at this and go WOW!

  • Migz13

nice:D Now that it’s presented the way they want viewers to see it then it looks good.

  • sense 11

    looks cool to me.

  • RomanM

Not a fan of the costume, like the photo though. The suit doesn’t hold up to light well, every photo of it that makes it look halfway decent is full of shadows. Spidey, unlike Batman, doesn’t only come out at night. Either way it’s not a big deal at the end of the day. If the script is good and the actors perform well, I’m still going to enjoy the film.

  • JC10

not sure about the texture on the suit, makes him look like the amazing spider basketball. Not crazy about the yellow eyes either. oh well, maybe the movie will be good.

  • Husk

I don’t mind the powerless web shooter Spider-Man as a point of difference from Raimi’s but the crawling tech would have to be explained a bit before we can judge. And yeah blue fingers & yellow eyes just aren’t very Spidey like. Should be silvery-white. The texture seems ok but I still get the basketball comparison.

No one’s commented one the checkered grid pattern instead of the classic curved web one. The embellishments of the red on the arms and legs look more like Kick-Ass. I don’t understand why they didn’t go simpler with it since Pete is supposed to be the one who makes the damn thing. The shapes of colors should be easily visible from far instead of making it unnecessarily complicated. Garfield looks good regardless and his acting chops can definitely pull it off. So look forward to be being surprised when it comes out.

  • battleangel

btw… notice how they fade out the feet =P Wonder if the hate for the silver feet has gotten back to the studio. Hey, if Spielberg can replace guns with walkies, maybe Sony could cough up a few bucks to give Spidey back his red f’n feet in post!!

  • battleangel

    http://cdn.buzznet.com/media-cdn/jj1/headlines/2009/04/john-krasinski-emily-blunt-couple.jpg

I mean- imagine these two as a married Pete and MJ. Maybe it’s just because I was a fan of the late 80s/90s versions of Pete as a somewhat older, settled dude who has fun being Spider Man and isn’t all angsty. I mean… I remember Peter Parker basically as Jim from the office with super science smarts, not as a vaguely science-interested emo-dweeb.

Here’s holding that the first official pic of Garfield (mask off) doesn’t entirely depict the direction for his character. Maybe they’ll realize that Iron Man did well because of the humor, and let a little sunshine in on Pete’s life. I’m pretty sure that Marvel let the comic book Spider Man just deal with some cool bad guys and tricky challenges without having to raise emotional angst as “the real villain.”

    • SavageEarth

I agree completely! Why do they want to turn Peter Parker into a fuggin’ MOPE?! I much prefer Spiderman when he’s cracking wise! He’s not Bruce Wayne! He’s one of the funniest comic book characters in the Marvel Universe!

the costumes ok little dissapointed but i do admire the fact you can see how the web shooter works and stuff with the black leather pressure pad would of preferred the classic glove colour scheme though the best incarnation of spiderman outside the comics for me is the 1990′s animated series at the time the citys animation and humour in the storys made it classic.

im not understanding why everyone is so hell bent on trying to degrade spidermans suit. Ill admit that when I first saw this suit….and when I heard they got rid of the whole cast… I Started really questioning the whole new project…then I started thinking back on my childhood and how spiderman has changed throughout the years…did we all forget how the first vol. of the amazing spiderman his suit was black??!! his suit has changed so much. We live in a world now that has to criticize everything. Everyone wants to question why they dont follow the comics so when they decide put web cartridges on his wrist like the comic then everyone wants the organic webbing back….nothing is gonna be exactly like the comic. this movie I think depicts a bit more of how spiderman came to be not only that peter parker is one of the first TEENAGER superheros but its gonna start off a little bumpy for this one cause we all fell in love with the first spiderman movie. We already have an idea of how spiderman should look and thats that! certain adaptations arent going to sit well. I think the one thing that has made movie like ironman so successful is that is was a bit grimy funny and action packed. Hopefully they’ll do that with this film and everyone will be happy!
