The first trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man has gone online.  I’m torn between “What was the point?” and “Sigh.  This is what ‘gritty’ Spider-Man looks like.”  First off: daddy-issues.  How original.  Second, there’s not a sense of joy in any of this trailer.  I re-watched the trailer for Sam Raimi’s first film and while there’s certainly some melodrama and an emphasis on action, you also see that there’s a fun movie in there.  I’m not getting that from this trailer.  However, I am getting that director Marc Webb has probably played Mirror’s Edge.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  Hopefully what I see at Comic-Con on Friday will be more encouraging.  The film stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Martin Sheen, Sally Field, and Rhys Ifans.  The Amazing Spider-Man opens in 3D on July 3, 2012.

And if you missed it, we just posted the first official poster for The Amazing Spider-Man.

    not impressive really

  • Bumblesquad

I am the real spiderman…. My name is bumble parker

    FIRST

  • Tarek

Sam Raimi’s one wins hands down.

So Webb has decided that spiderman can produce spider silk from his neck but not from his wrists ? WTF ?

  • grittymcgritterson

Yea I’m sorry to say it but no matter how succesful the “gritty” batman films are, Spiderman is ultimately about being fun. There, i said it.
“its grounded in reality this time” Really? Having spider powers is coheres to “reality”? and also spiderman and “grounded” i think-is an oxymoron.
Sam raimi brought one of the comic artists to actually sign off on spiderman hitting the correct poses. I applaud the idea of practical effects but if that means hes going to look the way a normal person would swinging on ropes, eh. No thanks.

  • Drew

I, for one, think this looks fantastic.

    • Sam Raimi

I, for one, welcome our new emo overlords.

      • Mueze

How’d Spiderman 3 work out for you? I’d say the emo overlords came way before this movie.

      • Tarek

Spiderman 3 was the weakest of the trilogy indeed. But still…I’ll take it any day over this silly flying latex gauntlet.

  • Clayton

Raimi’s definitely wins here, but damn, I never realized how many big sequences the trailer gave away.

  • Mueze

    I love it, it’s a change-up and much needed.

  • IllusionOfLife

This trailer does nothing to quell the argument that this was a completely unnecessary reboot and a desperate bid from Sony to hold onto the Spider-Man rights.

    • Tarek

and they will pay for this stupid idea…

Mark Webb trapped in the cobweb

  • boo

Stop being whiny fanboys. This is not Raimi’s movie it’s Webb’s. Obviously it’s going to be a different take. Secondly, Nolan took Batman in the same direction and single-handedly saved comic book movies. I think this is gonna be great.

    • IllusionOfLife

The difference though is Batman works as dark and gritty because that’s the way the story has almost always been written, with the exception of silver age Batman, Batman has always been a very dark story.

Spider-Man, while it does have dark elements, is fundamentally different from the kind of story Batman tells. Spider-Man has always had this element of “Holy crap, I’m a super hero! This is awesome!” that I’m not getting in this trailer. Yes there’s tragedy, yes there’s dark moments, but it’s always tempered by fun and excitement. This trailer is entirely too one-sided, and if it is an accurate reflection of the movie, I don’t have a lot of hope for it.

      • Electronaut

I wonder if they’re taking from the Ultimates Spider-man. I might be wrong, but that one had a darker tone to it from the get go.

    • tommy

Uh sorry how did Nolan single handedly save comic book movies? His Batman films are great… but seriously overrated. Also Raimi’s first two Spiderman movies are phenomenal and among the best comic book movies ever. Spiderman 2 > Dark Knight. Not by a lot… but it’s true.

      • Electronaut

The reason why Nolan’s Batman films did well is: A) Batman is more accessible because just a normal human, no superpowers. B) Batman isn’t campy. Spider-Man is, even when it’s not intentional, and that’s why Raimi was perfect for it.

In the end, you can’t really compare the two. Two different comic universes and two different characters (not just ability-wise, but how they were written)

    • The Train!

Can you clarify what you mean by “Nolan’s direction”? And how it saved comic book movies? Most comic book movies made in the wake of Batman Begins have not been very good.

Thor and Green Lantern being the latest examples, but let’s not forget that Punisher movie they made.

X-Men FC has struggled at the BO even though I hear it’s pretty good.

Iron Man 2 was also not very good although it did well at the box office. When did the latest Hulk movie come out? That sucked.

If you mean that Nolan reinvigorated the public’s interest in comic book movies, I would say that based on recent BO any public interest is waning. Furthermore, Iron Man had an entirely different tone than Dark Knight and was wildly successful.

I think, at the end of the day, it isn’t Nolan’s “gritty” take on the hero, but rather, the old stand-bys of good story-telling. And because those have been largely absent from the post-Dark Knight comic book movies, we haven’t seen the public embrace them.

I am genuinely intrigued by this movie because it looks like it has some psychological depth. BUT I can’t recall Peter Parker ever being a brooding misfit.

It might work great on the screen, but we also shouldn’t forget that the latter-day comic incarnation of Bruce Wayne IS a brooding misfit with a big chip on his shoulder. That was NEVER Peter Parker.

So I have to say that this looks less-than-satisfying as an adaptation of one of the most beloved Marvel characters. People outside of fanboy circles will notice.

I just hope they don’t make Superman a brooding outsider misfit. Maybe Robert Pattinson should just play all of these characters?

  • Kenny B

i’m sure this movie is going to look really good on screen, there’s still a year to play.

  • Ankur

Exactly as matt said, Whats the point? Look awful too. This is one superhero movie i am not going to see next summer, definitely.

  • Ryan

I don’t hate the new trailer, but the Raimi trailer did give away so much from the movie

  • Jim

This feels redundant. I’m not sure this franchise needed a re-boot. Just continue the story after 3 with the Lizard (dump Sandman and Venom) and a new director. Re-introduce Vemon and Carnage in 5 or 6.

    • The Train!

i WISH they could have kept raimi and maguire and continued telling the story through 4, 5, and 6.

my take is that SM 3 stunk because the studio pushed venom on raimi, who had a particular story arc in mind all along. if raimi had been left alone, that movie would have been better.

BUT die-hard webheads would have been up in arms because they hadn’t seen venom yet.

oh well. drag me to hell was excellent and i’m excited for the Oz project he’s working on, and that probably never would have happened if he was working on SM 4.

  • Mike

I mean it doesn’t look terrible Ill wait until more footage comes out to judge it but yes Raimi’s trailer is def superior lol

  • TheTrickster

    I like them both, actually.

  • James

Yeeah, I think it looks good. I’m reeeeally liking the gritty feel to it, so I’m excited. The one thing I DIDN’T like was the sequence from his point of view. Yeah, it’s cool to see what Spidey sees, but it all seemed really…fake. But I DID like it when he hit the glass wall. That was cool. =)

  • Jake

i was bored most of the trailer, because it basically looks like a remake of the first spider-man. Milking it or what? i miss Raimi already, even though spider-man 3 had it’s fair share of problems, i still like it.

  • Rob H

I agree that Spider-Man needs to be fun and light-hearted. Batman can get away with being dark and serious because his mythos are rooted in reality (i.e. no actual superpowers). I like both of these superheroes for their own reasons, and if Spider-Man doesn’t have a decent “cheese” factor then it doesn’t really work for me.

From this trailer I get a vibe like this: “I’m Peter Parker. My daddy shipped me away and I’m sad. But now I can swing from building to building to fight the man. Oh, and I’m a cutter.”

    Not promising.

  • sloan

yeah i like tobey maquire’s whiny voice oh wait, no i don’t. raimi’s looked so cartoony, not saying this one is going to be amazing but raimi’s? Come on…

  • Ryan

Wow, some of the imagery in the first person section was straight out of Mirror’s Edge. Like, to a point where, had you not mentioned it, I would have noticed anyway. Damn.

  • AlexHeyNa

Hold on… I thought it was said from the beginning that they weren’t going to be telling an origin story. That was clearly a flat-out lie.

But yeah, this trailer is a bit disappointing. It doesn’t feel like a fun action-adventure film. It feels like a gritty drama. I hope there’s more to it that meets the eye…

    • Bryce

Not to be argumentative, but i think from the beginning they said it was going to be a “flat out reboot”.

      • AlexHeyNa

That means absolutely nothing. A reboot is a reboot, not a term that means starting from the beginning. They want to restart the franchise, not the story.

I don’t remember who said it–I think it was Marc Webb–that the movie was going to begin with Peter Parker already in tune with his powers and in control of them.

    • weezer

Read your comment again see if it still makes sense to you.

    • weezer

People will always hate on this franchise because they mostly compare it to batman and nolans work, give it a chance to find out if you do hate it in the end. Btw peter and bruce are worlds apart, different stories and different lives.

      • weezer

Did not mean to reply again hahha

  • Rockslide

I know this is just a trailer so I’m not abandoning hope or anything, but I hope the movie is still more “fun” than emo. Spider-Man is about wise-cracks and high level action. He’s not and shouldn’t be Batman or Twilight. I hope it still has a lot of the quirkiness of 500 Days of Summer, that’s what made me excited about Webb taking a crack at Spider-Man. This trailer is just whelming, not over or under.

  • Dodge Hickey

Christ guys, it’s only the teaser…..i am will to give it a chance

for all you all know The Dark Knight Rises might not be as good as this (It will be but i am making a point, I love Nolan films)

i will judge the film come the proper trailer, they do have a solid cast for this one

    • Johnny 5

Yeah I guess your right, the cast is solid but the trailer looks like a carbon copy of Mirrors Edge..

But then again, A proper trailer would give us a proper look….

But at the moment i am unsatisfied

    • Johnny 5

Better then The Dark Knight Rises……are you crazy?

      • Tarek

I’m afraid he is. He just don’t know it yet. ^^

      • Dodge Hickey

you did read the part when i said “(It will be but i am making a point, I love Nolan films) ”

        get your facts right man

…….and yeah i am feeling a little crazy atm….for yo momma

      • Johnny 5

“…….and yeah i am feeling a little crazy atm….for yo momma”

so me a favour and come up with a comeback that is not from 2001….

funnily enough Raimi’s Spiderman came out then….

    • Guns Of Navarone

Exactly my thoughts. You can’t compare a teaser to a final theatrical trailer. We haven’t even seen The Lizard yet and it looks to me like the Mirror’s Edge sequence is a finale sequence or trailer exclusive sequence. I will wait for more before passing judgement but from what I saw – it looks pretty good.

  • Tarek

They must recall it “Spuderman”. ^^

  • Bryce

I gotta say guys, often times, you’re spot on — heck, usually you are — but you missed it on this one. It’s Spidey, what do you expect? And that trailer, compared to others that try to be like it — Green Lantern, Green Hornet, (Daredevil, Elektra, X-Men: Last Stand?) — isn’t nearly as awful.

Not to mention you’ve got Garfield, Stone, Webb, Kloves, Ziskin … I think they deserve the benefit of the doubt?

    • Tarek

Webb ? Uh…Not very impressive for me.
Plus this Garfield and his dragon Ball Z hair…^^

    • The Train!

there is no room for doubt on the internet! there is only the unreflexive certainty in the completeness of our own knowledge, the inability to imagine a universe in which we are wrong, and the impossibility of expressing ourselves without sounding like a snarky douche!

      • Tarek

and you forgot to sign this pamphlet: The Train Wreck ? ^^

      • Tarek

Yet another Matt Goldberg controversial topic…^^

      • steve

I picture a nerdy dude (The Train!), pushing 40, surrounded by toys still wrapped safely in their original packages, sitting on a computer chair replica of captain kirks pilot seat, writing a post like this.

  • tommy

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fp6qwLqOuJQ
    HD youtube link my friends
(also for the record Raimi’s Spiderman movies will never be topped)

  • Zimbee

I don’t have any problem with the series being rebooted, but there is the issue of “How long should we wait until movies get rebooted?” When Batman Begins came out, it was 9 years after Batman and Robin. This will only be out five years after Spider-Man 3. Is five years long enough?

I don’t think this is the greatest trailer though. If Raimi’s gave away too much, this one hardly gives us anything. Too much Peter Parker, not enough Spider-Man. And even though I knew this was a reboot, I was hoping they would forgo the whole origin thing again and he’d already have had his powers at the beginning of this movie. That was the one thing that Batman Begins never had to worry about despite being a reboot — there was no Batman origin story in the other movies. We already had an origin story for a Spider-Man movie. Why do we need another, even if it’s told differently? I really hope they don’t spend a lot of time on Peter trying to figure out what’s happened to him and just get things moving along.

  • Lob Taylor

Am gonna go with the ‘What was the point?’ school of thought on this one!!!!!!

  • Grant keanan

Actually am pretty pissed off, What was the point of yet another SpiderMan origins movie for gawd sake!!!!

    And this at 3D prices.

  • Al

GASP! who knew Spiderman was ACTUALLY Edward Cullen. From the trailer Parker looks less nerdy and more emo by the way he’s constantly glaring off and the school stuff looks totally ripped from twilight. Plus all of the childhood stuff seems very batman begins like. Not to mention the mirror’s edge/doom first person shot which looked completely computer generated. I pray that shot does not make it into the film, it’s rubbish. There’s still some hope though with the cast and crew they’ve amassed lets just hope they understand the source material.

  • Jay

Looks fantastic. Great tone. Loved the first person stuff. But then, I’m not a joyless, whinnying cunt.

  • BlackConvoy

Part of me is optimistic and I really want this to be great. Another part of me also wants this to be so bad that Sony loses the rights to the property, and Spider Man goes back to Marvel where he rightfully belongs.

  • jake

I believe there is a side to this “reboot” that they haven’t shown us yet. They are selling the idea that this film will be gritty and dark, along the lines of Nolans take on Batman. But I really think dark and gritty is not what they are meaning. It’s sophistication. We are not seeing a hell of a lot of it in superhero films now. I think there will be the fun that everyone is hoping for, but won’t be thrown in front of the storytelling. I’m interested in seeing where its going. Hopefully, we won’t be let down.

  • Raimi

dude fuc#ing awesome !!!! thanks for the share

  • Cole

so much better than spider man crap !!!

  • drew

it is a sharp change but when you’re rebooting something so soon i think it needs it im sure the actual movie will have some fun and funny moments I am wondering if harry will still be his best friend cause he is missing from the trailer

    P.S.
the spidey-view was actually pretty cool not to nausea inducing as I was expecting slow and smooth it will looks cool in 3d falling towards the street and such I want to see an actual scene thouch trailers can be very misleading…

  • Anthony

Hey Matt, I wonder if you ever found out that you are NOT funny. Also no one on this website cares about your opinion. You should seriously stick to writing about independent films and stay away from EVERYTHING else.

    • PatLang

Couldn’t agree more. He doesn’t like anything at all. It hurts to read sometimes.

      • Tarek

couldn’t disagree more. He always hits the bull’s-eye. ^^

    • AlexHeyNa

Why do you hate Matt so much?

  • dpramroop

comic book movies would never be made if it wasn’t for blade, ps blade 2 the best movie based on a comic book

  • alex

even though i don’t like the dark approach too much, i think its really just to set the mood and i’ve confidence that they will find a good balance for the finished movie.

what i can’t understand is the first person shot at the end. at best this is video game cut-scene land and just shouldn’t be in a teaser for a franchise this big. why??

  • Byron ramirez, Jr

Didn’t Webb over-stress how he’s going to use traditional stunt work with his Spider-Man?? That entire scene was CGI… I’ll still see it, though. But most of you hit right on the button, Spider-Man can do without the dark, gritty, edgy tone.

  • munsterb

Since when is Peter Parker a super cool skateboarding super-cool cool guy? I’ll take Tobey Maguire’s whiney voice any day… (minus SM3 of course)

  • Conoro

You are arguing a teaser trailer’s quality. Get a life.

  • Amac

looks fun. as it should be

  • monk

I actually dig it. Recently I watched an interview with Stan Lee and he spoke about his cameo in this film and from what I remember, his description of it indicated that there will be some humor in this film so don’t worry about Spider-Man being all sad and gloomy, I really think this teaser isn’t giving too much away.

  • Phil Beta

I thought it was great the first time I saw it. Now I believe is not worth wathcing it.

For all I know, most of Sony’s movies feel like made for profit. No way I’m watching this.

  • Reggie

Just for what it’s worth I dug the Raimi take on SM until it got to pt.3 That one sucked real bad almost Catwoman level suckage. That being said I for one embrace a little change and even though I did’nt get the usual SM vibe or tone from this trailker it does look kinda interesting. Maybe a little angst and brooding is what this series needs and I’m sure there will be comedy and fun after all it really would’nt be a SM movie without it would it? Like most trailers this one is meant to sho one aspect not the whole and maybe there purposely playing up tone to further distance themselves from that trainwreck that was SM3. My two cents anyways.

  • j jonah jameson

I smell a Green Lantern, possibly an Indy IV, level flop.

    • Justin

“possibly an Indy IV, level flop.”

In what universe did Indy IV flop? Might’ve been an underwhelming film, but that didn’t stop it from doing $786,000,000 worldwide.

Just to drive the point home, about five minutes ago I was reading a thread that described Iron Man as wildly successful. Indy IV made about a million dollars less than Iron Man domestically.

So I guess $317.5M is the cutoff between flop and wild success?

  • Jay

Wow. I definitely see why some people wouldn’t like the gritty look for superhero movies, but I LOVE it.

And i personally think that first person scene was amazing. Now I’m REALLY looking forward to this. I got goosebumps at the end.

  • joe kerr

its going to be hard to watch this movie without experiencing some kind of deja vu.
