Though director David O. Russell is still feverishly working to finish the film, Sony Pictures has released a new TV spot for American Hustle.  The story is based on the Abscam sting operation that uncovered widespread political corruption in the late 1970s, and Russell’s fantastic ensemble cast is led by Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, and Jeremy Renner.  This new TV spot features some new footage from the film, and critics and Oscar pundits alike are itching to get a look at the pic given that Hustle is one of only two potential awards contenders that has yet to be seen (the other being The Wolf of Wall Street).  Given the success of Russell’s Silver Linings Playbook at the Oscars last year, Hustle seems poised to make some waves—a fact we discussed on the latest Oscar-themed episode of The Collision.

Here’s the official synopsis for American Hustle:

A fictional film set in the alluring world of one of the most stunning scandals to rock our nation, American Hustle tells the story of brilliant con man Irving Rosenfeld (Christian Bale), who along with his equally cunning and seductive British partner Sydney Prosser (Amy Adams) is forced to work for a wild FBI agent Richie DiMaso (Bradley Cooper).  DiMaso pushes them into a world of Jersey powerbrokers and mafia that’s as dangerous as it is enchanting.  Jeremy Renner is Carmine Polito, the passionate, volatile, New Jersey political operator caught between the con-artists and Feds. Irving’s unpredictable wife Rosalyn (Jennifer Lawrence) could be the one to pull the thread that brings the entire world crashing down. Like David O. Russell’s previous films, American Hustle defies genre, hinging on raw emotion, and life and death stakes.
