Amy Adams Cast as Lois Lane in SUPERMAN Reboot

Amy Adams has been cast as Lois Lane, fellow Daily Planet journalist and romantic interest of Clark Kent, in the Superman reboot.  Adams is the fourth official cast member to join the Superman reboot: Henry Cavill (The Tudors) is Clark Kent/Superman; Diane Lane and Kevin Costner will play Clark’s adoptive parents Martha and Jonathan Kent.

In keeping with the secrecy surrounding plot details, director Zack Snyder (Sucker Punch) declined to comment on the prominence of Lois Lane or the nature of her character arc in the movie, but he did call the role “a linchpin” to the project.  Read more of what Snyder had to say about signing Adams after the break.

amy_adams_02Snyder told Hero Complex:

“There was a big, giant search for Lois. For us it was a big thing and obviously a really important role. We did a lot of auditioning but we had this meeting with Amy Adams and after that I just felt she was perfect for it.”

I’ve been a card-carrying member of the Amy Adams Fanclub since Junebug, so I couldn’t agree more.  The official bio describes Lois as “a strong and assertive woman more than capable of handling herself in dangerous situations.”  Done.  Just give Adams a bottle of brown hair dye and she’s good to go.

Snyder spoke a bit about how he’d like to present Clark and Lois to a modern audience:

“It goes back to what I’ve said about Superman and making him really understandable for today. What’s important to us is making him relevant and real and making him empathetic to today’s audience so that we understand the decisions he makes.  That applies to Lois as well. She has to be in the same universe as him [in tone and substance].”

The reboot, which may go by the title Superman: Man of Steel, is scheduled for release in December 2012.

I am happy with this decision. Even though I would have liked to see Erica Durance continue to play her.

  • Justin Beaver

Amy Adams is so beautiful and voluptuous. This incredibly gorgeous and curvaceous young woman is pure American perfection.

    • Strong Enough

      curvaceous?

LMAOOOO where in her cheeks? gtfoh u really need to look at more women

  • Arthur Marcus

THIS FRANCHISE IS HUNGRY FOR GREATNESS! This is the time to rebuild the franchise. They should exclude Lex Luthor or General Zod from the Superman movies for a while. They should utilise the villains that weren’t included in the previous films such as Bizarro, Brainiac, Doomsday, Metallo, Toyman, Darkseid, Atomic Skull, Bloodsport, Bruno Mannheim, Conduit, Cyborg Superman, Faora, Gog, Imperiex, Intergang, Jax-Ur, Kryptonite Man, Livewire, Mala, Mercy Graves, Mongul, Morgan Edge, Mr. Mxyzptlk, Parasite, Prankster, Sam Lane, Silver Banshee, Solaris, Superboy-Prime, Superman Revenge Squad, Terra-Man, Titano, Ultra-Humanite, Ultraman. This is a second chance to get it right. This is an opportunity.

    • Joe

Did you just go to wikipedia and name every superman villain you saw listed? I could see Brainiac being cool. But I personally would like to see the Metallo/Lex Luthor arc from Secret Origin. Or heck, do an entirely new villain like in Earth One.

  • Gilberto-El

    Bela Escolha!!!!!!

  • J.R.

She was my choice for Lana Lang, but anyway she is a good actress i just cant see her as Lois, but everything is going well hope to hear for Jimmy, Perry and Lex soon

    • naren

      rupert grint for jimmy olsen

  • Ryan

    That’s an inspired casting decision.

This film is shaping up quite nicely.

The man has good eye for choosing the right actors for certain roles, see Jackie Earle Haley as Rorschach as an example.

  • Ethan Bale

They should have cast one of the below rising young actresses as Lois Lane rather than making her a cougar:

Mischa Barton, Rachel Bilson, Sophia Bush, Kat Dennings, Hilary Duff, Leighton Meester, Ellen Page, Jessica Szohr, Evan Rachel Wood

    • Rukia

You watch too much CW, dude. Leighton Meester is the only decent actress you even mentioned.

I’m a little down on this project since Sucker Punch was so terrible. A good casting decision. (I would have preferred McAdams though.)

    • Rukia

You watch too much CW, dude. Leighton Meester is the only decent actress you even mentioned.

I’m a little down on this project since Sucker Punch was so lousy. And I would have preferred Rachel McAdams. But this is a good casting decision. Amy is a really good actress.

    • Terry

      Ethan I could kiss you!
Ellen Page would have been an amassing choice for Lois Lane. Even the Girl from Winter’s Bone, Jen lawrence(but she’s doing X-men. Sigh!) would have rocked.
      But Amy Adams? WTF!
We don’t need a super star LL! If they want to rebot the franchise they better go slow and be methodical. IMHO.
Hell, Blake Lively would have even rocked.
We’ll see won’t we how this turns out.

    • D

In what universe does mid-30s and looking a good bit younger equal cougar? Particularly given that the male starts a female lead plays opposite are frequently this age range or older.

  • sense 11

    That’s just delicious news:)8

  • Christine James

We should expect one of the following rising young actors to play Jimmy Olsen:

Shia LaBeouf, Anton Yelchin, Zac Efron, Ed Westwick, Penn Badgley, Chad Michael Murray, Adam Brody, Thomas Dekker, Chace Crawford, Emile Hirsch, James Lafferty, Michael Cera.

One of the following actors will probably Perry White:

Ben Stiller, Adam Sandler, Will Ferrell, Ricky Gervais, Simon Pegg, Eddie Izzard, Rowan Atkinson, Owen Wilson, Jack Black, Rob Schneider, Jeremy Piven, Mike Myers, Jim Carrey, William Shatner, Steve Martin, Alec Baldwin, Tim Allen, Chevy Chase, John Goodman, Billy Connolly, Danny DeVito, Robin Williams, George Lopez, John Cleese, Steve Coogan.

  • H20

I would have rather seen her as Glinda in the James Franco OZ movie, which I’m assuming she just took herself out of the running for. She would have been PERFECT as Glinda, one of those like she was born for.

  • battleangel

Agreed that she would’ve been a pitch-perfect Glinda, but I’m hoping that this casting is indicative of the fact that Snyder isn’t trying to make his suckerpunch version of Superman. I suppose Amy Adams could be completely exploited, but I think she’s a killer choice for this role. I’d be a little more stoked to see a Supes movie finally take flight than a prequel to Oz. We shall see!

There are enough dumb bratty Britney Spears types out there and I’m glad that none of them got the part. They are really taking casting Lois Lane seriously!!!! Amy Adams is an Oscar Nominee and a serious actress. She practically changes personalities and sometimes looks from role to role. Lois Lane is a hard character to perfect, since the last person who played the part in Superman Returns played it one-dimensional. Kate Bosworth just came off as annoyingly b#tchy. Yeah right, if Lois Lane was simply b#tchy which she is not. Kate Bosworth was a flat chested and annoying. Amy Adams can bring in everything that she lacked. Amy Adams can bring in:

    1. Subtle humor (which I have not seen in any of the Lois Lane’s on TV or movies). Teri Hatcher acting like a dumb blond dork does not count. Hell Amy Adams is at Christopher Reeve level (who was roomates with Robin Williams in college).
    2. She can bring in teary drama. Which let’s face it, Terry Hatcher could NOT do on her best day. I’ve never seen that level of acting from Erica Durance either. But, at least Erica Durance tries to act unlike Terry Hatcher.
    3. She can make her character’s emotions three dimensional.
    4. If Amy Adams amps up the s#x appeal and makes Lois Lane as s#xy as possible than it just might be the greatest Lois Lane of all time. The hottest I’ve seen Amy Adams is in Night at the Museum 2 when she was in the skin tight pants. I hope the camera man and wardrobe person is not gay on this one since if they don’t take advantage of showing her perfect hiney than they are stupid and don’t care about this movie making money. Kate Bosworth was dressed in a nun’s outfit for Superman Returns.

Amy Adams will be great as long as she steps up the s#x appeal. Since as we all know Lois Lane can very easily be a turn off depending on how she is portrayed. She will need the support of the Director, costume designer and studio to pull off the first Lois Lane that is not simply an annoying brat. This is the best casting choice possible. So, let’s hope she is given the opportunity to create the greatest Lois Lane.

    • crazySEXYcool

You say you want Amy Addams to step up the character’s “s#x appeal”, yet you censor the word SEX! hahahaha I definitely agree that she can bring the “teary drama” needed for the role though. hahahahah

    • Errol

Why are you censoring the word “sex” in your post? Dude, it’s not even an obscene word. What’s up with that? I mostly agree with your post, but censoring “sex”just made me lol! I was reading it and I was like is this guy for real? ;-)

      • Robin Hood or Green Arrow

Wow, how did you to guys graduate from elementary school? He is censoring the word sex because some of the entertainment sites block-out that word! Or he’s used to e-mailing people that work for corporations and they screen out even the most innocent of words including sex. I mean are you guys joking? Stay on topic and stop ruining these threads with imbecile thoughts.

I agree with everything Mephisto had to say too. To add to that, it is funny how Amy Adams played an insignificant character on Smallville several years ago then through dedication and spending every waking hour on being an actor she has now surpassed that entire cast to make it to playing the part of Lois Lane on the big screen. You see boys and girls, if you work hard and spend years dedicating yourself than dreams do come true.

  • Junierizzle

F*ck yes! MY favorite actress. She clearly doesn’t “need” this project, which leads me to believe that the story must be really great if she wants to be involved. She is such a geeat actress she just gave this reboot some legitimacy.
I know some are going to say she might be too old but everyone said Kate Bosworth was too young. Amy Adams is the perfect age to play Lois Lane.
    Once again, F*ck Yes!

  • Mike

Gotta love WB’s timing. Snyder’s Sucker Punch is panned by critics and fails and comes in second behind Wimpy Kid, so they announce Snyder’s new casting choice for Superman.

Granted, Cavill’s casting was also announced on a Sunday. Hmm…

  • Armand

YES THEY GOT IT RIGHT!!! Still worried about Zack Snyder tho : S

  • TwoNineteen

ha, the people saying who will be cast…you basically just listed every working actor, and if you happen to get it right (because you left no one out), you’ll say you called it…hehe, anyway i just thought that was funny…but about Amy Adams, i think it’s a great choice. i was always a Batman guy, always hated Superman…this is the first time i’ve ever looked forward to seeing any version of a Superman movie. i already wanted to see it because of Zack Snyder, now they’re putting Amy Adams in it…she’s about the best actress out there right now as far as I’m concerned…so anyway good choice

  • Matt

Kidder was terrific in the original; her personal troubles have obscured this fact, unfortunately. Adams will be hard-pressed to match her.

  • Ian

I remember first seeing her in an episode of Season 1 of Smallville. She’s really turned into a very good actress, I’m sure she’ll be good as Lois.

  • Migz13

Good casting I guess because I think Adams is a pretty versatile actress. I just hope Snyder and Nolan won’t fuck up with this one.

  • Alex H

I just got even more excited for this movie.

  • Zena

Absolutely agree with the newest casting decision for S:MOS. Oddly enough though, did anyone else have the strangest thought that perhaps Anne Hathaway would have been great as Lois Lane, and that Amy Adams would have made an interesting Selina Kyle?

I’ve been curious about the chemistry between Amy Adams and Christian Bale since The Fighter, and hope that they work together again the future…

Regardless, finally actresses with genuine acting ability are finally picking up roles that could easily be wasted, so I love this one.

  • Jack R

Superman reboot is from Sucker Punch director. Nooooooooo…

  • Robin Hood or Green Arrow

    Mephisto,

I’m also in total agreement on Teri Hatcher. She is an arrogant actress and there is no way she could compete with today’s young actresses who are far more committed to acting.

Superman Returns sucked in so many ways. It looks like Zack Snyder is doing everything the exact opposite of Brian Singer. Which is a good thing. I still hope that they stick with the crystal space ship and fortress since you cannot come up with anything more high tech than that. Stick to some of the rules of the Richard Donnor world please since you really can’t surpass them. As for Superman’s parents being alive, well, they can still be since they are alive in the comics. What I’m saying is follow what works with the Richard Donnor version and that can’t be surpassed, but get rid of Lex Luthor and General Zod. Seriously, that is being repetitive and is going to turn audiences off BECAUSE WE’VE SEEN IT ALL BEFORE. There are far more awesome villains like Dark Side that have never been on the big screen. I’m not talking about that joke of a Dark Side that we don’t see on Smallville. I’m talking about the one from the cartoons and comics.

  • Anthony

Amy Adams is 37…. she’ll be in her early forties if this is a trilogy. Really? How is that going to work? Diane Lane is hotter then she is and is going to play Superman’s mom! Amy Adams is a great actress but this is not a good choice.

  • Anthony

… and she’s 9 years older than Henry Cavill. Why don’t they just get Meryl Streep?

  • TheNipplesofGod

So I saw SukerPunch tonight……. and I have to say it was Child Porn(note to Mr Snyder Child porn and Superman is bad) stupid story, And It looked like a video game.

To tell you the truth that’s not what scared me… it was more all the trailers for all the movies coming up is Humans.. overcoming great odds, or aliens, or some miraculous hero that comes and saves us…. When in reality if someone launches nukes! there’s gonna melt are brains , and are bodies will fly apart like paper(“I’m not saying that’s whats gonna happen .)That’s just a example..

So to the point! I think Donald Trump Or possibly Gary Busey …. Probably Donald Trump… Is the Antichrist… And I think he is paying off Hollywood to make all these stories of Love and Hope Because they now that when something happens We will most probably be Dead real quick Basically “Momma say’s Hollywood’s the DEVIL!” or more accurate, the TOOL.. of the DEVIL …… He Manufactors these movies of hope to give us hope, when in reality were dead!!

The Elite of “PEOPLE” or the rich bitches in Hollywood! The directors, the actors, the Studio heads Definitely Will Smith and His kids Rich people from around the world have passes to some sort of underground strong hold For the day!!12, 22, 12… The Day they picked to put One of thee greatest Hero’s That are imagination can dream up “Superman”on screen. On that day something will happen. I’m not sure what will ….. Just be warned Hollywood Is The TOOL OF DONALD TRUMP!

You will flock to the theaters like sheep to See the Movie that will be hailed as “THE GREATEST MOVIE EVER TO BE CONCEIVED, DRAWN UP, PRODUCE, SHOT, DIRECTED, Acted, GREATEST SPECIAL EFFECTS TO EVER BE PUT ON FILM……….SUPERMAN!!!!!!!!” Harry will fall asleep through it but won’t be alive at the end to care….. NONE of us will FOR just at the moment in the film when Clark Kent not yet Superman , Has been beaten down and all the people around him don’t trust him The part wear he is at his most humble and his lowest and realizes That he must become Superman to save everyone BOOM!! your dead. What ever is GONNA happen will happen and that will be it.

I like to think that the Rich People…. The “ELITE” ….. Will survive To Face A new Night Mare!!!The War Against the Gary Busey Clones!

    YOU WERE WARNED

    • JessJess

What the hell are you on?

  • Peter

Sucker Punch has been Snyder’s only true weak spot, and I think it may be because he’s not as solid a screenwriter as he is a director. Watchmen, 300, and Dawn of the Dead were more than any fanboy could have hoped for in this climate of arthritic Hollywood adaptions and remakes. So yes, Sucker Punch is a stain on his career, but he’s not writing Man of Steel. David Goyer is, and he co-wrote Batman Begins.

As for Amy Adams…she wouldn’t be my first choice, but her personality is just right, and she’s a proven A-list actress. Performance matters most. After the superb, unpredictable, and equally derided casting of Watchmen, I trust Snyder.

    • ringbearer1420

      Amen.

  • beno101

Think Adams will be a great choice. She’s really come on well in the past couple of years, holding her own against some of Hollywoods best so think that she can take on this role too. All we need now is someone decent (Hugh Laurie anyone?) for Perry and we’re onto a winner. Gotta say I’d have loved someone like Fincher to direct, could have done a gritty and dark Superman film but after Watchemn, I believe Snyder has the potential and ability to pull this off

  • Candie Dilnot

Why do they always have to mention the age of a female actor?? Just wondering. Didn’t see any age mentioned for Henry Cavill..!

  • christophercantos

next casting news, WB cast Leonardo Di Caprio as Lex Luthor.

that would not only make my day(because the Amy Adams news already made the day, but make the month. make every people forget that Snyder did Suckerpunch and that he is making Superman his follow-up.)

come on Leo, you’ll nail this villain role. low profile, not the main villain role. he’ll nail it. if Lex is in the movie, then he is perfect

I’m not excited about the reboot, to be honest. I like Henry Cavill and I know that Amy Adams is a good actress, but she’s not an actress that when I hear she’s in a project I’m like “Okay, I HAVE TO watch that movie”, so I’m kinda not giving a F about Superman right now.

I think I prefer Rachel McAdams 100 times more. It is the superhero movie I’m less interested in right before Green Lantern, and I know I won’t watch Green Lantern, so unless they start giving more juicy/interesting news, I know I won’t watch it either (unless the trailer is awesome, of course).

  • Brett

Amy Adams is a good actress. But when you have Diane Lane cast as Ma Kent, it’s going to be incredibly difficult to conceive of anyone playing Lois Lane because all anyone is going to be thinking about all throughout the movie is not Superman’s girlfriend Lois Lane but how FRIGGIN HOT Superman’s mother is. That to me is a problem.

  • Brett

Amy Adams is a good actress. But put her against Diane Lane as Ma and there’s a problem. Because no one is going to care about Superman’s girlfriend Lois when all anyone is going to think about is how hot is Superman’s mother is.

  • Cypher

I find her blah. The shoulda tapped Kate Bekinsale. Grrrr

  • Pgitt

    http://www.youscreeniscreen.com
I’ve liked Amy Adams in things, but I hated Sunshine Cleaning and her sections of Julie & Julia. She’s also about a decade older than Cavill–I don’t think that’s necessarily a problem. I prefer Lane to be more worldly than Clark Kent. I’m not against the casting, but I really wonder what this Superman is supposed to be like. If you left out the fact the film was Superman and told me that there was a movie coming out with Diane Lane, Kevin Costner, Henry Cavill, and Amy Adams, I doubt I would be excited about it. Throw in Viggo Mortensen though…

  • Lame Duck

Amy is not my ideal actress to protray Lois Lane I would have perferred Racheal McAdams yet Amy is still an excellent chioce…I can totally see her as Lois. Like Anna Hathaway, they both have a sweet, girl next door image to them. That being said, Amy and Anne are both good actresses which is why they will both WOW the audience when they completly take on roles that defy their previous performances. Can I see Rachael as a chain smoking, sassy reporter? Nope. But do I think she can pull it off…hellz yes. As for the age issue…who the hell cares, the girl looks good for her age doesnt she not? Henry looks older then her as a matter of fact. Im not a feminist dude or nothing but I hate it when a actress’s validation is suddenly how old she is. If she looks young and sexy then thats all we need to be concerned about.

Amy Adams will be great, I’m more concerned about Zack Snyder. He needs to be prohibited from producing any more interminable slo-mo action scenes. Watchmen, which I liked overall, would have been much more effective (and shorter) if the action had been swift and gritty. After the never-ending attack on The Comedian I became acutely aware of the problem and gritted my teeth every time any of the following action was slowed down to a snails-pace. Snyder’s not the only director who leans on that crutch but he needs to let it go.

  • tmc9

I am very hopeful of the new superman movie. Amy Adams is a good actress who can make a strong Lois Lane. However, like most movies the writing will make or break a film. I not a fan of the movies credited to Snyder in this thread except Batman Begins. If, this superman movies is even close to the latest batman movies, I will be happy Who is writing this movie? And what is there track record? Good actors certainly helps but does not guarantee results. Kevin Spacey is a great actor but a terrible Luther.

I think this is a good casting decision. Amy Adams is by far the best looking Lois Lane we’ve had in any of the Superman films. She’s also a decent actress.
