Director Adam McKay Wants to Release an Alternate Cut of ANCHORMAN 2 in Theaters Made Up Entirely Out of Different Jokes

Anyone familiar with director Adam McKay’s process knows that there’s always plenty of material from his films that ends up on the cutting room floor.  There are loads of alternate scenes and jokes from Step Brothers and Talladega Nights that didn’t make it into the finished films, and probably the most notable case of this improv surplus was on the 2004 comedy Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy.  McKay released a feature-length DVD called Wake Up Ron Burgundy, which was essentially an alternate cut of the film comprised of an excised subplot and alternate scenes;  the result was some of the funniest bits from the entire production.

Now it appears that McKay has a similar issue on the upcoming sequel Anchorman: The Legend Continues, as he hopes to release an alternate cut of the film in theaters made up entirely out of different and alternate jokes.  Hit the jump for more.

anchorman-2-legend-continues-rudd-carell-koechner-ferrellSpeaking with Empire, McKay revealed that the current cut of the Anchorman sequel runs one hour and 53 minutes long (the longest film McKay has made thus far), but he has a bounty of extra material that he’d like to put to good use:

“We did so much improv on this one that we can literally replace every single joke in the movie and put in alt scenes and alt improv runs. I think the editor’s working on it right now, with 250 new jokes. I think it would be really funny to put it in theatres for midnight showings. I know that I personally, if I loved a movie and someone told me that, like if Airplane! had been released with all-new jokes, I’d be like, ‘you’ve got to be fucking kidding me!’ I’d see it in a second.”

I know plenty of people (myself included) who would be thrilled to see an alternate cut of the film in theaters, so here’s hoping Paramount gets onboard with this idea.  At the very least, they have to include this thing on the Blu-ray.  Anchorman: The Legend Continues opens in theaters on December 20th.

i think this just goes to prove that (like the original) this will barely be a “film.”

it’s a prolonged masturbatory session for Will Ferrell and his friends.

i like that they can all hang out and have some fun – but it doesn’t actually make for great comedy. that comes from writing. which American comedic cinema has seemingly been forgetting to do for a while now (I’m looking at you “This Is The End” – god, at least this film won’t feature a truly shocking ending where some of the laziest comedy actors get to high-five each other’s dicks and balls and show you that only the rich and powerful will get into Heaven because they really are just better than you. awful.)

dude how pretentious do you have to be to refer to this is the end and anchorman as “films.” they are movies, popcorn flicks. the whole concept behind them is a joke. they’re supposed to be fun, not taken so seriously. just relax and enjoy them or don’t watch them. if you seriously didn’t laugh during the first anchorman, i’m not even mad i’m just impressed.

Are you serious? the best comedy comes from improvisation not writing…you know next to nothing about great comedy

Also, there were plenty of regular people that made it into heaven in This Is The End….did you miss the scene where all of the people were beamed into Heaven right before the apocalypse went down?

So I guess Ghostbusters, Blazing Saddles, Space Balls, Coming to America, When Harry Met Sally, Annie Hall, Some Like it Hot, Airplane and Dr. Strangelove were all improvised, right? While there are some great BITS that can be improvised on set, they are still bits that must be held together by a funny, solid narrative…the best comedy is actually scripted by brilliant writers…even most standup comedy is scripted beforehand by the comedian, with some improv thrown in here and there. The idea that great comedy comes not from writing is ludicrous.

If the dead pool movie ever gets made, I hope they release multiple versions. That is, any dialogue where deadpool breaks the fourth wall can be swapped out with different dialogue.

shouldn’t be too costly and it would bring it more money for an r rated movie if they gave the fans a reason to want to see it multiple times.

      wrong article?

My point was if this works out for anchor man, then hopefully that would set some sort of precedent for a deadpool movie.
