In a blockbuster landscape dominated by superheroes, Sony Pictures has one of the most famous with Spider-Man.  His latest adventure, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, doesn't swing around until May, but the studio is already looking two sequels aheadThe Amazing Spider-Man 3 is slated for June 10, 2016, and The Amazing Spider-Man 4 is set for May 4, 2018.  But by the time the fourth installment rolls around, there could be a new actor wearing the web-shooters.  In a recent interview, star Andrew Garfield mused on the possibility about hanging up the costume after the third film.

Hit the jump for more.  The Amazing Spider-Man 2 opens in 3D on May 2, 2014.

In an interview with Yahoo! Movies UK, Garfield says:

"I mean I’m under contract for another one after this… as far as a fourth one? That's not anything to do with me.  But yeah, I think what we’re doing here is we've established the world. And now we get to really play inside that world."

Damn you, Garfield!  Don't you know we won't be satisfied with the near-future?  We have plans to make for 2018, and you need to RSVP now.

Garfield was a fine Spider-Man in the first movie, but even he admits that they now have the opportunity to go much further:

"I think there was something missing in the first one because our focus wasn't on character as much we were trying to keep a number of plates spinning in the air – How can we reintroduce the character? How do we not upset this guy or this guy? That was a tough wasteland we had to move through. Now we could say, 'who is this guy?' How can we best serve Spider-Man?'"

I don't know how Garfield will hold up as Spider-Man.  He's a good actor, but so is Tobey Maguire, and by the time the fourth film rolls around, Sony could be content to find another younger, cheaper talent to fill the suit.
