One of the world’s most popular characters is back on the big screen as a new chapter in the Spider-Man legacy is revealed in The Amazing Spider-Man. Focusing on an untold story that tells a different side of the Peter Parker story, the new film stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Denis Leary, Campbell Scott, Irrfan Khan, with Martin Sheen and Sally Field. The film is directed by Marc Webb from a screenplay written by James Vanderbilt, based on the Marvel Comic Book by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. Laura Ziskin, Avi Arad, and Matt Tolmach are producing the film in association with Marvel Entertainment for Columbia Pictures, which will open in theaters everywhere in 3D on July 3, 2012.

The Amazing Spider-Man is the story of Peter Parker (Garfield), an outcast high schooler who was abandoned by his parents as a boy, leaving him to be raised by his Uncle Ben (Sheen) and Aunt May (Field). Like most teenagers, Peter is trying to figure out who he is and how he got to be the person he is today. Peter is also finding his way with his first high school crush, Gwen Stacy (Stone), and together, they struggle with love, commitment, and secrets. As Peter discovers a mysterious briefcase that belonged to his father, he begins a quest to understand his parents’ disappearance – leading him directly to Oscorp and the lab of Dr. Curt Connors (Ifans), his father’s former partner. As Spider-Man is set on a collision course with Connors’ alter-ego, The Lizard, Peter will make life-altering choices to use his powers and shape his destiny to become a hero.

This photo of her and the doll is dirty on so many wonderful levels.

  • Colin

So Peter was a popular kid in highschool. Weird.

    • O.R.

      Why are you assuming that?

      • Justin

Because he’s dressed like Fonzi in the first picture. Obviously Fonz = cool.

anyone else hate that spidey mask? the eyes are super yellow.

    • M-2

I hate it too… Its like, I just want to give Spidey eye drops to clear that ish up!!!

  • Farzan

Yeah the costume looks like shit. They nailed the right costume and look of it in the previous Spidey films

    • Eric Nixon

Too bad that’s about all they nailed.

      • Underground Anthem TX

Yeah, Eric, you’re right– Aunt May & Uncle Ben’s casting, the wrestling scene, Dr. Octopus, J. Jonah Jameson, Sandman, Peter’s struggles in career and love, the New York vibe– Raimi didn’t get any of it right in his trilogy except for the Spidey costume.

        Freaking ridiculous.

I hope this movie is really really good. I really do. I was happy to hear about the Webb-Garfield-Stone grouping. But with every trailer released, I feel like I’m getting less and less psyched, I’m still really really looking forward too it, but it’s looking more and more like a “That was cool.” (ex. Iron man 2, Thor, Capt.) movie then “OMG. Let’s go get another ticket!” (Avengers, Dark Knight, Iron Man, Spidey 1+2.)….. And i REALLY hope its the latter.

Everyone is so picky!!! Some people do watch movies for the story.

Well, sir, some of us actually care about the quality of something we are paying money to see.

This is an adaptation. The story has essentially already been told. If that was the only thing to care about, there wouldn’t be any point in doing it again in a different medium.

Don’t get me wrong, the story is important, but there are other elements to a movie. You could tell the same story with stick figures drawn on someone’s ass.

Those little elements that people are so picky about are related to how the story is told, and that’s what separates a good movie from a bad one. Will, for example, having a Spider-Man with yellow eyes ruin the movie? Not necessarily, but to some of us it suggests that the people in charge may not be handling things in the best way.

In this case, being an adaptation, there are elements to the characters and story from the comics that many people would prefer to see maintained in the film. Not everyone agrees on all of those elements, some are more important to some people than others, but what is the point (other than money) of even doing an adaptation if everything is going to be changed anyway? If this were an original movie, not based on a comic, not many people would care that Spider-Man has yellow eyes, to use the same example again (although, aesthetically, it does look odd in conjunction with the red and blue).

The bottom line is that this is an adaptation, and therefore has a preexisting guideline to follow. The more it strays from the guideline, the less it resembles the story and characters those people want to see on the screen, and the less reason there is to care that, in this case, there is a new Spider-Man movie. I’m being a little extreme here, but I’ll say this anyway: after a certain point, it becomes Spider-Man in name only. It might still be a good movie, but it wouldn’t be a good *Spider-Man* movie.

If the secret about Spider-Man’s parents turns out to be that Norman Osborn is Peter’s father, I would prefer to see the version consisting of stick figures and an ass.
