Angelina Jolie can almost always move forward a project of her choosing, and it looks like she’ll be taking the Sleeping Beauty re-imagining, Maleficent, as her next feature. While promoting her directorial debut, In the Land of Blood and Honey, and the Berlin Film Festival, Jolie told THR,
“I haven’t acted in two years, and I haven’t done anything else since this [Land of Blood and Honey]. The next thing I am looking at is a Disney movie,” said the actress.
The “Disney movie” would almost certainly be Maleficent unless it’s another project that we haven’t heard anything about. Jolie’s last film was The Tourist although audiences heard her voice last year in Kung Fu Panda 2. Hit the jump for more details on Maleficent and a refresher on her other projects.
The original Sleeping Beauty has Maleficent casting a spell that would cause Aurora (the “Sleeping Beauty”) to die if she pricked herself on a splinter. The fairy godmothers cast a counter-spell where Aurora will sleep for a century if pricked and then be awakened by the kiss of a prince. I guess even fairy tale characters have to compromise from time to time. Maleficent would tell the story from the eponymous villain’s perspective. The movie would be yet another fairy tale re-imaging headed to the big screen, but it would be the first with an A-List star like Jolie (I don’t count Sam Raimi‘s Oz the Great and Powerful since it’s based off a novel from 1899; Sleeping Beauty comes from the Brothers Grimm)
Jolie is also attached to star in biopic of Cleopatra possibly directed by David Fincher and a biopic of the “Female Lawrence of Arabia” Gertrude Bell. She was also circling an untitled thriller for Luc Besson, but THR says Maleficent takes that movie off the table.
