Neil Burger to Helm ANIMAL RESCUE for Fox Searchlight

     June 11, 2012

When last we discussed author and screenwriter Dennis Lehane, he was working on adapting his short story, Animal Rescue, for Fox 2000.  Now, Fox Searchlight has tapped director Neil Burger (Limitless) to helm the adaptation.  The picture was previously described as revolving around a killing as a result of a lost and contested pit bull, with new details adding in a man trying to leave a life of crime and a heist gone wrong.  Hit the jump for more on the project, including why the combination of Burger, Lehane and Searchlight might just be a winning one.

Variety reports that neil-burger-animal-rescueSearchlight will rely on the Limitless director to shepherd Lehane’s Animal Rescue adaptation.  Burger is coming off of a surprise success with the Bradley Cooper starrer and has a track record that includes The Lucky Ones and The Illusionist.  Animal Rescue isn’t the only adaptation on his list, as Burger is set to direct Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, a video game-to-film production with Sony and Atlas Entertainment.

Lehane is a Boston-based author best known for his crime-drama novels, many of which have been adapted into successful films in recent years.  His repertoire includes: Mystic River, Gone Baby Gone and Shutter Island. Lehane has also written episodes of HBO’s The Wire.

Fox Searchlight has put out six pictures this year, three of which they produced (Ruby Sparks, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and Lola Versus). Their other films of 2012 include Beasts of the Southern Wild, The Do-Deca-Pentathalon and Six Sessions. Searchlight will produce Animal Rescue alongside Chernin Entertainment.
