ANNABELLE Teaser Trailer Hints at a Potentially Terrifying Film

Last week we got the news that Annabelle, the spinoff of The Conjuring, was indeed the “Untitled New Line Horror Film” that had previously been scheduled for later this year.  Today, in what seems like a remarkably quick turnaround, we have a two minute teaser trailer for the movie.  If you’re even remotely a fan of The Conjuring this is something you’ll want to check out (though it should be noted that Annabelle is not the official sequel The Conjuring 2, which is set for release October 23rd, 2015).

Annabelle was directed by John R. Leonetti (who served as a DP on The Conjuring and should be able to recreate that film’s style) and written by Gary Dauberman (the upcoming Crawlspace).  James Wan is producing alongside Peter Safran.  The film stars the somewhat ironically named Annabelle Wallis (Peaky Blinders), Ward Horton, and Alfre Woodard. New Line and Warner Bros. will release the film on October 3rd, 2014.  Hit the jump for the Annabelle teaser trailer.

I really like this teaser.  It follows a similar approach to that first “clap clap” teaser from The Conjuring by setting up the tone and world of the film, rather than racing through plot points and spoiling the mystery.  It also appears at the very least serviceably menacing and violent.  These kind of wide release horror films that feel like they could actually be effective are increasingly rare, so let’s cross our fingers for this one.

I never understood why a doll would be scary. Light it on fire, lock it in a cage, drop kick the bitch. If a doll kills you, you’re most likely a loser.

so you wouldn´t be scared by a living doll?come on, you´d shit your pants, and even if you “killed” the doll you´´d still would have nightmares because what once was the real world for you got broken in a way that can´t be fixed anymore.most people would end up in the loony bin, so don´t tell me a living doll isn´t scary just because you think you´d “kill” the vessel before dying of a heart attack.

My main problem is that the doll actually looks scary. Why would anyone make a doll like this? Chucky was a cute doll, which made him so much more terrifying. Annabelle is a straight up creepy doll, so it lessons the impact.

It’s all about perception. Some people like that kind of doll’s look.
Chucky was a cute doll aimed towards an innocent boy. In case you’re unaware, he’s actually based on a kids’ toy named “My Buddy”. And it works for the story, since Chucky’s goal is to trick the kid so he can get what he want. It proved to be harder anytime someone saw all his scars.
Annabelle doesn’t look like she’s meant to be a toy doll, more like a collectible doll. And fittingly, she’s placed among a collection of dolls in the trailer, and she’s in the demonic collection in The Conjuring.
I don’t think a living doll is going to be less impactful based on looks. Chucky, the cute doll, is possessed by a dead man, Annabelle, the already-creepy doll is possessed by something else.

The actual ‘Annabelle” is a Raggedy Ann doll. Not very scary, and nothing like how it looks in this movie.

Thanks for the reminder. I should have specified as “This version of Annabelle…”.

Looks just as creepy as the “Conjuring” was love the use of jarring sounds and just off camera action.

I’m sorry but that’s why we black people don’t go and “check anything out,” its not cowardice you understand, its called Caution. If something funny is happening next door wait for more concrete information before proceeding, it could save your life. If at anytime during my investigation I get a whiff of demonic possession then, “Feet do your stuff!” (Now that’s cowardice) Secondly, I live in the inner-city we hear gunshots all the time. I’m not going to put my shoes on and walk towards the danger “Unarmed” like Superman. Incidentally that “What Ever Happened to Baby Jane” doll has Possessed written all over its face. I guess if you didn’t have average people doing stupid things on film there’d be no horror film genre.

    • Norrtron

Haha, yeah investigating a domestic violence situation next door in the middle of the night rather then just calling the police seemed like a terrible idea.

Was hoping the doll would blink in the end. Fun trailer though not really a trailer because it basically gives away the setup.

    Chucky 2.0.

I don’t care what anyone else thinks, I found that doll extremely creepy in THE CONJURING. I might have even shivered once or twice… can’t remember.

K, just watched the trailer…. This film looks like sh*t.

      • David Wilkinson

That’s what I was thinking. Looks like it will just capitalize off of The Conjuring and that’s about it. Yay. Another cash grab by Hollywood.

James Wan needs to get over his puppet fixation. So many of the films he works on feature puppets, pick another horror trope already!
