First Trailer for ANNIE Starring Quvenzhané Wallis, Jamie Foxx, and Cameron Diaz

     March 5, 2014

Sony Pictures has released the first trailer for director Will Gluck‘s (Easy A) new musical adaptation Annie.  The redo stars Quvenzhané Wallis (Beasts of the Southern Wild) in the title role as a young, happy, street-tough foster kid living with the mean Miss Hannigan (Cameron Diaz) who is taken in by New York mayoral candidate Will Stacks (Jamie Foxx) in a thinly veiled campaign move.  The film is very clearly a modern day update of the story, as it bears little resemblance to the 1982 film adaptation of the same musical.  Wallis appears to be sufficiently charming in the lead role, and Diaz puts an interesting spin on the mean Miss Hannigan sans drinking habit.  Some of the music is rather heavy on the auto-tune, but all-in-all this looks to be a fairly entertaining musical aimed squarely at families looking for an agreeable holiday movie outing.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer.  Produced by Will Smith, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Jay-Z, the film also stars Rose Byrne, Bobby Cannavale, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, and David ZayasAnnie opens in theaters on December 19th.

Here’s the official synopsis for Annie:

A Broadway classic that has delighted audiences for generations comes to the big screen with a new, contemporary vision in Columbia Pictures’ comedy, Annie.  Director/Producer/Screenwriter Will Gluck teams with producers James Lassiter, Will Smith & Jada Pinkett Smith, and Shawn “JAY Z” Carter, Laurence “Jay” Brown, and Tyran “Ty Ty” Smith with a modern telling that captures the magic of the classic characters and original show that won seven Tony Awards. Celia Costas serves as Executive Producer.  The screenplay is by Will Gluck and Aline Brosh McKenna, based on the musical stage play “Annie,” book by Thomas Meehan, music by Charles Strouse, lyrics by Martin Charnin, and on “Little Orphan Annie,” © and ® Tribune Media Services, Inc.

Academy Award® nominee Quvenzhané Wallis (Beasts of the Southern Wild) stars as Annie, a young, happy foster kid who’s also tough enough to make her way on the streets of New York in 2014.  Originally left by her parents as a baby with the promise that they’d be back for her someday, it’s been a hard knock life ever since with her mean foster mom Miss Hannigan (Cameron Diaz).  But everything’s about to change when the hard-nosed tycoon and New York mayoral candidate Will Stacks (Jamie Foxx) – advised by his brilliant VP, Grace (Rose Byrne) and his shrewd and scheming campaign advisor, Guy (Bobby Cannavale) – makes a thinly-veiled campaign move and takes her in.  Stacks believes he’s her guardian angel, but Annie’s self-assured nature and bright, sun-will-come-out-tomorrow outlook on life just might mean it’s the other way around.

I’m not wild about the updated setting or the casting of Cameron Diaz (she just seems to be hitting the wrong notes), but Quvenzhane Wallis and Jamie Foxx seem to make a good team.

  • Arthur Dent

No thanks. Didn’t like the original, won’t bother with this.

  • Mixed Race rich kid NYC

Looks bad but I’ll still watch
    Cameron Diaz looks miscast

    • André Camilo

She always seem miscast in every movie she does

    • jajar

it looks decent and it feels more fresh than one would expect from a remake.
be a nice fun experience with the family.

  • bleh

next an updated Shindler’s List, SET IN AFRICA!

    • The Pop Pessimist

    • Mixed Race rich kid NYC

This right here is white humor!!!!
Whites invaded America but for some reason they see blacks born here as Africans
Ricky balboa is a fictional character but he gets a statue in Philly while joe Frazier got no statue in Philly just because he’s black

      • screensheen

Rocky Balboa…Ricky Balboa serves pizza down the street from me

      • Charlie

Isn’t it blacks that insist on being called “African Americans?”

    • spaceMONkeyx01

I though the black actors in this movie were americans. My bad.

  • Hamo

So much autotune on ‘Tomorrow’ this looks awful.

  • Scullibundo

Will Diaz ever stop playing her role in Vanilla Sky?

  • Christian Leroux

Haters gonna hate, but I was REALLY surprised by this trailer. The casting seems excellent, and it hits all the right cords. I thought this project was laughable at first, because I didn’t understand the need to go “let’s remake Annie but with black actors!” but that’s not the impression I’m getting here because both Jamie Foxx and Quvenzhané Wallis seem absolutely perfect in their roles.

  • gwiz30

I was nervous about this because I loved the original so much when I was a kid but this looks like it might be fun. It will be nice to take my niece because I’d never get her to watch the original.

wow that autotune is very noticeable

  • Colin

Annie from the hood. Oh boy. First the Karate Kid, now this.

    • Redjester

  • Jamesy

    This looks f**king awful.

  • rizzo

This could have actually dealt with some real issues, and the updating setting is a nice idea. But this looks too tame. We don’t need Nolan Annie, but Ms. Hannigan just seems a mild annoyance.

  • Strong Enough

if they play Jay-Z’s hard knock life in the beginning this will be the greatest movie ever made

    • Jim

      They will.

  • Mezmero

I guess they went all out for this. Good to actually see a wealthy black man in a positive light. Hollywood you confuse me sometimes. One minute you put us in a box the next you don’t but we will see your reaction if this turns out to be mediocre. Don’t think I forgot about Red Tails.

  • alk

this had so much potential. so sad…

  • ʝoe ßloggs

    1. From the trailer, the movie looks enjoyable and watchable as a family flick.
    2. Diaz’s portrayal of Ms. Hannigan only reinforces the brilliance of Carol Burnett.

  • Matt1

    I didn’t hate this.

    • HealthyAmerican

That was my surprised reaction as well.

  • orianalianna

Yeah I am not watching this. Could they have chosen a worse actress than Diaz?

    It looks so awful…ugh.

  • Redjester

It’s a shame Cameron Diaz chose to go full retard as its looking like she might have single- handedly sunk this picture.

Shame, because Quavenzhane Wallis is a damn fine child actress and deserved better.

  • Jack le Critic

The biggest surprise is that Will Smith didn’t cast himself as Warbucks.

    • Sweet Pea

Jaden Smith turned down the role of Annie, so Will had to pass too…

  • James Claar

Is it just me, or does the trailer leave little to the imagination? I don’t really feel like I need to see the movie now because they gave such a clear synopsis of what the whole movie consists of.

  • amnesiac

This just has Bad all over it.
