During Marvel’s presentation at Comic-Con today, Kevin Feige confirmed that Ant-Man’s Corey Stoll would indeed be playing a villainous role, while Evangeline Lilly has landed the female lead.  We’ll keep the specifics of their characters until after the jump for those who’d like to stay spoiler-free, but they should come as pleasant if unsurprising news to comic fans.

Also starring Paul RuddMichael Douglas, and Michael PeñaAnt-Man opens July 17, 2015.  Hit the jump for more.

ant-man-yellow-jacketStraight from Marvel’s presentation in Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con comes the news that Stoll will play the film’s villain, Darren Cross.  Having had Dr. Hank Pym (Douglas) as his former mentor, Cross takes their company in a direction that Pym does not agree with.  Before long, Cross gets his hands on some Pym particles and becomes the villainous Yellowjacket.  Here’s what Feige said about Stoll:

“Corey brings depth to every role he plays.  As a major part of the Ant-Man ensemble, we all wanted an actor who could be both cunning and sympathetic, and help create a character as dynamic as Marvel’s best antagonists.”

ant-man-waspEqually interesting to Stoll’s role is that of Lilly, who has been confirmed as Pym’s daughter Hope Van Dyne.  Comic fans may recognize the similarity to the name Janet Van Dyne, the daughter of a prominent scientist who was a contemporary of Pym’s and eventually took on the mantle of the Wasp.  Looks like the movie version is changing up the mythology a little bit, but that’s par for the course.  And here’s Feige’s comment on Lilly:

“We’ve been fans of Evangeline for years, and couldn’t be more pleased that she’s agreed to join us on Ant-Man’s journey to the big screen. We look forward to audiences learning more about her character when she joins forces with Hank Pym and Scott Lang in 2015.”

Filming on Ant-Man begins on August 18th.  Make sure to take a look at our Marvel panel recap on the film, and click here for all of our previous and continuing Comic-Con coverage.

Excited that Corey Stoll is the villain, and hopefully he won’t be wearing a bad wig.
Lilly playing the Wasp as Pym’s daughter makes sense. She is probably his estranged daughter, after he beat her mother, if they go that route. If they do, it would be a dark territory that most Marvel movies stay away from, but at the same time, will bring some dramatic moments to the film, and I’m sure Michael Douglas can pull it off well.

    • HORSEFLESH

They won’t be going that route; none of the Marvel films do.

    • The Walking Cuban

      I’d rather not see that

    • Prof. Bananas Goldsteinberg

You know that was down to artist misinterpretation, right?

    • Agent777

Maybe they will take it in a Fire Walk With Me direction. That would be so unique and refreshing for a comic book movie, don’t ya think?

  • TigerFIST

I’m so confused. I thought hank pym took on the yellow jacket persona after he retired the antman costume and scott lang took it over. Or stole the suit. I also thought Wasp was Pym’s wife not daughter. Can anyone explain this to me please.

    EDGAR WRIGHT!

    • HORSEFLESH

      It’s films not comics.

      • TigerFIST

Yeah but that’s waaaaaaaaaaay off. I understand some changes but am I reading this wrong?

      • Agent777

Correction; it’s a half assed adaptation, not the comics.

      • HORSEFLESH

The comics were half-assed; not particularly well written.

    • appolox

Yeah your completely right. But they’ve changed it for the movie. And it was Edgar that made those changes and you wont shut up about how upset you are that he left so don’t even think about complaining about these changes!

      • TigerFIST

I just asked a legitimate question. Also how do you know Wright made those changes?

      • appolox

Because these details were leaked long before Edgar left. And while the new writers obviously made changes I guarantee you the plot its still the same.

    • Dark Knight of Steel

Ant-Man is a very hard property to adapt and they change what they need to to sell it to regular audiences. Besides the stuff about Darren Cross having a black and yellow suit (Yellowjacket) that would work like Ant-Man’s was rumoured way before Edgar Wright even left cause he understood the property and knew changes had to be made. This is his story.

I’d there a live stream of this? Link please?

    • Gregory Ward

Live stream? For real? You know you have to pay big bucks to get into those panels.

  • Matt

    Awesome. Awesome. Awesome.

  • Daniel Ronczkowski

Was that their only presentation? Or is Marvel giving us more?

Um, I hope Marvel announces at least more than Guardians 2…like at least 2-3 more films.

    .
    So….Iron Man. Sort of.
    .
Does anyone know who Patrick Wilson was supposed to be playing?

    • appolox

I’ve heard a rumor he could be playing one of three roles. A friend of Scott Lang, an employee at Cross Industries or the villain Crossfire. And your right about the Iron Man connections. Main character’s former business partner goes crazy corrupt, tries to kill him and dons a similar suit to fight him. Iron Man and Ant-Man will essentially have the same villain story.

My guess was and still is young Hank Pym. One of Wrights cooler yet slightly more out there (at least from a suit perspective) ideas was a 1960s prologue of young Hank Pym Ant-Maning it up. Not only is it Wilson a close enough match to what could be believed as a young Michael Douglas, but it would explain why IMMEDIATELY before and after it was announced that Wright was walking, Wilson tweeted his concerns that he may not be in the movie. (something people have ignored after the other days news that he left due to ‘scheduling’ conflicts.)

I’d bet my soul for a fiddle of gold Wilson would have been 60s Ant-Man/Pym
