Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Paul Rudd Frontrunners for Lead in Marvel’s ANT-MAN

After years of development, filmmaker Edgar Wright’s adaptation of Ant-Man for Marvel is finally coming to fruition, and now it appears that Wright and the studio have narrowed down their choices for the titular lead role.  Wright has been working on Ant-Man with Marvel for quite some time, and he co-wrote the script alongside Joe Cornish (Attack the Block) a few years ago.  The director chose to write and direct this year’s excellent The World’s End before diving into the Marvel world, but now filming on Ant-Man is poised to get underway next year in anticipation of a July 2015 release date.

So who may be donning the antennae for Wright?  Apparently Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Paul Rudd have emerged as frontrunners for the lead role.  Hit the jump for more.

paul-rudd-ant-manThe folks over at Variety report that Gordon-Levitt and Rudd are the leading contenders to play Ant-Man, and both are poised to meet with Marvel execs and Wright one more time before a final decision is made.  There’s also a possibility of one more actor being added to the mix, but right now Gordon-Levitt and Rudd are the frontrunners.

The two are contending for the role of Hank Pym, who in the comics was a brilliant scientist who invented a substance that gave him the ability to shrink in size at his will.  Wright will no doubt be bringing his signature sense of humor to the film, and Gordon-Levitt and Rudd both seem like excellent choices to take on the lead role; it’s a win-win situation, really.  Rudd was actually asked about the possibility of playing Ant-Man a couple of months ago, and the actor sounded enthusiastically game about the possibility.

Wright is apparently keen on casting a “normal looking actor” with a wise-cracking personality, and one can imagine either Rudd or Gordon-Levitt playing an excellent foil opposite Robert Downey Jr. or Chris Evans when Ant-Man eventually joins the Avengers team.  Hopefully we hear more firm word soon.  Ant-Man opens in theaters on July 31, 2015.

What do you think, dear readers?  Who do you imagine would best suit Ant-Man, Rudd or Gordon-Levitt?

Well, this could go in massively different directions.

I was hoping for Alan Tudyk

    • Guest

They said a 3rd person could be named. Fingers crossed.

  • LL

    Rudd. All the way Rudd.

  • Paul Levitt

I was very surprised to see Paul Rudd as a candidate. Good for him. I love Joseph Gordon Levitt but if I had to had one, it’d be Paul.

  • Dan

I thought JGL was in the running to play Dr. Strange

  • Batzombie

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is cool and all, but definitely Rudd for this one. I’m intrigued by the idea of him playing a superhero.

  • Raptor Jesus

Two good choices. I’d be leaning towards Paul Rudd, but that’s just me.

  • NICK НΛRT

i agree with the others, JGL is a very good actor and I’m sure he could do great things with this role, but Paul Rudd would be PERFECT as hank pym. only question is are they going to bleach his hair? not sure how that would look..

    • Gaebora

The original Variety article states clearly, that it is not known
whether the actors are considered for the role of Hank Pym or Scott
      Lang.

  • Strong Enough

I want Rudd to play a villain.

    • eternalozzie

      I agree.

  • SomeGuy

I actually really dig the idea of Paul Rudd in this film. It is definitely something fresh for him and I could totally see his humor being set free in an Edgar Wright motion picture.

  • Sean

Wait, what?…..I thought that Marvel was going to announce who will be playing Ant-Man, not announce 2 frontrunners for the role.

  • Tyler Scruggs

PAUL RUDD OH MY GOD I’M CRYING

I’m sorry JGL, you can take on something else but I need this. I…need this.

  • Brenno

Imagine Rudd and Downey going at it…the lol’s would be coming hard and fast

    • dunoo

Imagine Rudd, Downey, and Pratt! it would be a goddamn lol hurricane

    • chrissy

OMG why did you say that, now I’ll cry if I never see that happen! lol

  • TigerFIST

This is cool. I’m happy with either. If I had to choose one I would go for Rudd though. Both are great.

For this,I think Rudd.He has earned it,I think he could bring a lot to the mix.Either way, very cool.

  • cruzzercruz

My knee jerk reaction is to vote for JGL because he’s fantastic, but given that this is an action comedy, I think Rudd would make for an interesting choice. Maybe JGL could be Scott Lang? I was under the assumption that they’d both be playing roles in the film.

  • FoxyGrandpa

Since the movie’s going for a more serious edge but with a little comedy, I think Levitt might be the best choice.

I just voiced my opinion. Let the shunning commence.

    • The Flobbit

      I shun thee.

  • Person

Paul Rudd all the way. Nothing against JGL but Rudd seems the better fit.

  • Moonraker

Interesting! If they go with Pym and Lang in this film, they could eventually segue into an Avengers film where the Scarlet Witch murders Lang; or they can follow the A.I.M storyline from Iron Man 3, in which I believe Lang and Pym have story lines. IDK so many possibilities. Any who, I like Rudd and Levitt so for me, either one would suffice.

    • eternalozzie

AIM in Iron Man 3 was almost as terrible as the fake Mandarin … They best pretend that Iron Man 3 never existed and move on.

      • Daredevil

That’s mostly why they did not show any elaborating end credit scene which would tell connection between future movies

  • Señor Hormiga.

Rudd awesome! It feels good, i don’t know why media and people on the project of batman/superman movie cannot understand the reasons why the majority of movie fans don’t want Affleck, we don’t care how good of a filmmaker he is, he can’t act, bad press, lack charisma, stiff, talks funny, and it feels plain wrong. I didn’t want to read the comments on this and when i did was a little surprise that most were positive but thats because these are good choices you can feel it in the gut.

  • Devin Reed

Definitely Paul Rudd!!! That would be an inspired piece of casting.

Liar, I don’t believe you. Prove it.

      • The Flobbit

You people are the scourge of the internet.

  • Matt

I feel like Rudd’s sense of humor might be better suited for Wright’s take on the hero. I’m purely an outsider in the comics book world, while obviously being a big fan of the films, but I think JGL could be better used elsewhere. Rudd is a fascinating choice though. I wonder if he’ll be expected to beef up at all for the role? That would be interesting to say the least

    • eternalozzie

Ant-man is a very serious scientist … if you are going to go the comedian angle I nominate Bo Burnham.

      • Bob

Edgar Wright is directing and its Marvel. I know Pym is serieous as hell in the comics but you can bet the movie is gonna be funny. Kinda like the Sherlock show with Cumberbatch.

  • Salfie

The article says that they’re vying for the role of Pym. Is that true? Has there been an official word on it? Also wasn’t there a rumor about Ewan McGregor being Ant-Man less than 3 or 4 weeks ago? I’d be happy with any of these fellows in the role.

    • Gaebora

The original Variety-article states, that both actors are front-runners for the titular role of Ant-Man, but it is no known which incarnation of the character (Pym/Lang). Wright had stated in the past, that he wanted to incude both in his script, Pym in the 1960s as the original Ant-Man and Lang as the modern day hero. I don’t know, if that’s still the plan, of course.

  • RUDD FOR ANTMAN

RUDD!!!!!! He is my first choice. Love JGL though. But RUDD seems too perfect for this role.

  • The Flobbit

I’d really rather it be Simon Pegg. But if it has to go this way, Paul Rudd brings humor and style to the game. But a 100 foot version of him seems a little scary.

  • Nemesis11

hope this is true. Rudd will be awesome

  • Bob

Both great actors…but I actually want Paul Rudd for this role. I think he could be great for it. Levitt would still prob be good but I think he’s a little to young looking for the role.

  • cat

They’re over a decade apart in age and JGL looks way younger than he is. So I say just pick an age. Honestly, neither is what I’d picture so I could go either way. I could see Tudyk. He looks the closest. I know for this type of casting it’s all about the best fit but the hair color issue always bothers me.

    • Moonraker

Tudyk would be cool as Ant-Man! Personally if they throw in the Wasp, Tudyk would be the most believable as a wife beater.

      • cat

Well, he’s insanely versatile and he does make a very convincing serial killer/slasher/whatever. But I’d rather they leave out the wife beater bit. I appreciate loyalty to the comics but it doesn’t make for a compelling or sympathetic hero.

  • Mezmero

RUDD. He has proved what is needed for this roll. JGL could play MAR-VEL OF THE KREE. You hear that JGL fans he can still be there just not as ANT-MAN.

  • Gaebora

The original Variety article states clearly, that it is not known whether the actors are considered for the role of Hank Pym or Scott Lang!

    • Bob

The article clearly says there competing for the role of Hank Pym. Personally I hope Lang never joins the universe. If he does JGL can play him, Rudd as Pym.

  • Frank

    Nathan Fillion dammit, NATHAN FILLION!!!

    • Cog

Has gotten pretty heavy to play an ant.

      • LEM

Maybe he can play Adam Ant.

  • LEM

Paul Rudd? well that came outta nowhere. JGL gets so close to being Batman and now isn’t even first choice for Ant-Man.

  • Jim

JGL has been in the running for pretty much every superhero movie for the past years worth of casting. Dr. Strange, StarLord, now Ant Man. Lucky guy.
Paul Rudd will be good. I love JGL but Rudd seems like a better fit.

  • Cog

Needs to be an ego driven super genius with a bad attitude and a leftist mentality.

  • sense11

both good choices but I think Rudd is a better match

  • Faptain America

Just repeating what’s been Rudd already.

  • Greyson

I finally know what it’s like for a mother when she is asked which is her favorite child. I JUST DON’T KNOW!!!! :O

PAUL RUDD, PAUL RUDD, PAUL RUDD!!

  • Jamesy

I don’t know much about Ant-Man or Hank Pym other than what i’ve heard from movie news like casting etc, but Rudd and Wright teaming up would be awesome! From what I know of the character it seems offbeat and Rudd seems the better fit, can imagine him riffing off Downey and Pratt.

  • Giovanni Luis Jiminez

Anyone concerned about Rudds physique ? I was hoping for a taller younger more athletic looking Antman akin to the teaser wright showed at comic con. Love Rudd but also not sure about him pulling off a believable scientist as well. First reaction would be jgl but Rudd could be interesting, who knows ?

    • Greyson

athletic stature can be achieved… look at starlord :P

  • Kevin Carter

    I’ll shout for Paul Rudd.

  • doctor_robot

    RUDD.
